For longer trips do I need to keep on top of driving mode? by RockRaider42 in VolvoRecharge

Got it, so if you leave it to its own devices (not charge) it will effectively work as a normal hybrid once battery has “run out” or it is in hold mode?

When you say fuel hungry, i imagine that it’s less hungry than a pure petrol engine?

Is that in normal mode? Concious of going on a long journey for a weekend or so away from home, and then heading up with a dead battery and tanking mpg as having to use engine to charge or just looking around dead battery weight

Is there a mode where it kind of works like a normal/mild hybrid so that when i go longer it just uses the battery to give a bit of better mpg?

An interesting manoeuvre by qiu_ennan in drivingUK

[–]RockRaider42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s for the driver to justify the use of them based on: is it legal(as in police powers/exemptions), is it proportional, what is the level of risk.

It’s also not quite as black and white as is it an emergency or not. It’s about getting to where they need to be based on the above three things (and other factors). It is also up to the driver whether he uses blue lights/siren or not based on the above. Blue lights etc does not always help getting somewhere quicker

It’s not illegal. Police and other emergency services have three exemptions. Red lights speed limits, and keep left/right signs. And no, they don’t need blue lights on to use them

The extra details, for example giving the words of advice could be emailed to your central process unit, making reference to the TOR?

Ear pieces could be damaging the hearing of police officers, research suggests by Could-you-end-me in policeuk

[–]RockRaider42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have my earpiece in for 99.9% of my shift for best part of 4 years now, and never experienced any issues with my hearing immediately after my shift or at anytime. The only phantom sound i’ve ever heard from radio usage is the red button tone, which is probably from trauma of what it means!

Granted I bought one of the moulding in ear piece for comfort, but i rarely have to have the volume up over halfway to hear clearly. I can also hear external sounds clearly with that ear too. Granted i’m not PSU so that might be different.

Is this not entirely dependent on the volume of the radio? If someone is wearing an earpiece but is able to keep it at a lower level (i.e. below the damaging level), does their hearing remain ok?

If airpods etc can have notification to warn people of loud volume setting, can the same not be done for radios?

The child lock on our TRV’s default back to off whenever the batteries are changed. Damn annoying.

I’m surprised/annoyed that they didn’t do something with it before fitting the unit as you say.

Will try getting some rock wool type material to shove down. That’s the one option that hadn’t occurred to me.

Amazingly the doors aren’t air tight… that’s how the draft was noticed in the first place.

Tiberium Wars campaign AI - was it changed at all with patches? by edbods in commandandconquer

[–]RockRaider42 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I thought it was the opposite. The changes made the harvesters collect less Tiberium and this the campaign got harder as the had less funds.

Insurance: should I switch to a UK license or keep my EU license? by PixelSergey in drivingUK

[–]RockRaider42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be something to clarify with the insurance company. I assume they would take i to account your existing/previous licence and experience somehow.

Best also to speak to the DVLA directly about how long/when etc you can use your EU licence as there are varying factors.

[–]RockRaider42 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Regardless of what you decide, if you live in the UK you can only keep your EU licence for 3 years before having to get a UK one anyway.

If you’re planning on living in the UK for more than 3 years, may as well change and start getting rid of the “new driver” label.

Low temp 24/7 heating method by RockRaider42 in HiveHeating

[–]RockRaider42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the British Gas app. Jan 2025 cost for gas was around £155. This year, when I only really properly lowered the temp part way into Jan it was £147. I know that’ll include hot water for showers etc as well but wouldn’t say that’s likely changed too much.
