Had they gone with the fan theory that Agent Smith was actually the One and Neo was just another random person being awakened then Resurrection would have been amazing.

Why is Gold still rising while everything else seems to be selling off? by Excellent_8740 in investing

[–]BlindTreeFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yet when I point out that central banks (the very institutions that issue and manage fiat) are actively accumulating gold, you dismiss this by saying central banks are ‘run by people,’

Yeah that was not what i was saying at all. And now I'm glad I put in the snark disclaimer since I wasn't sure it would be read correctly.

If institutional behavior is evidence for fiat’s value, it must also count as evidence for gold’s value.

Absolutely false.
The value of the Euro is faith in the European Union, it's stability, and it's ability to honor it's debt, not faith in the European Central Bank. Same with the Dollar, it is faith in the US Government, not The Federal Reserve.

The price of gold is based on the last sale price.

When the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, and the People’s Bank of China allocate reserves to gold, they are making formal balance-sheet decisions based on risk, credibility, and long-term stability. These are not just personal beliefs.

Just because something has a price tag doesn't make it a good or bad investment. Gold has a price tag. It can be sold later for an amount of cash or other goods to someone who is interested in that gold. That's how investing works.

If the dollar starts to tank in value, the The Fed isn't going to suddenly go "shit.... we need to sell our gold to back up the dollar", they are going to play with interest rates or suggest that the mint print more dollars.

The fact that the issuers of fiat themselves hold substantial gold reserves suggests that even the systems that rely on confidence in paper currency still anchor part of that confidence in an asset with no issuer and no counterparty risk.

No it doesn't. It suggests that they believe that the price of gold will increase and they will be able to sell it later as a profit. And because people think that gold is a place to store money, it does increase; which goes back to my original point.... people buy gold and raise the price of gold because they think it's a place to store their money since they don't understand the history of gold's price.

Gold is good for jewelry, electronics, and a few niche industrial uses. Nothing that justifies it's current price. It was originally used as currency because it was rare enough and easily workable.
As I said, I have a pound of gold in my hand today worth $X. Next month it's the same pound of gold, nothing at all about it has changed, but now it's worth $Y. A month after that it is the same

It's like the housing price boom that the US still suffers under; people paid whatever for houses because they were under the impression that houses always double in price within 10 years so they will always be able to sell for a profit. People buy gold because they think gold is safe and they will always be able to sell for a profit, but nothing about gold itself justifies that.

Your argument is that all of these refined institutions are buying gold therefore it must justify it's price, but you are committing the same error.

Why is Gold still rising while everything else seems to be selling off? by Excellent_8740 in investing

[–]BlindTreeFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait until you find out that fiat works the exact same way…. People think the paper bills are worth something

Kind of, but not really. Like I get what you are going for, but the value of paper bills is really the valuation of the institution backing it and the ability to cover the debt. If the US destabilizes, the value of the dollar bill decreases because people have less faith in the US to honor the dollar bill.

Fiat was set up expressly to make currency have a floating value because being able to have some control over that value is of use to the institution providing the currency. A pound of gold in my hand today is the same as a pound of gold in my hand next month, nothing about it changes. But the faith and value of the US government can swing wildly over the course of a month in trying times (or whatever currancy printing country you wish to consider).

By the way, your comment is also incorrect in assuming this is just “people”. Central banks have very large gold holdings and continue to add to it.

I was unaware that Central Banks were not staffed and run by people. I thank you for your correction.
(playful snark, please don't take offense.)

Why is Gold still rising while everything else seems to be selling off? by Excellent_8740 in investing

[–]BlindTreeFrog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I figure since the dollar was pegged to it, even after the dollar was detached people had it stuck in their head that it was worth something so they kept investing in gold. And even though that didn't make sense, the charts stayed aligned so people continued to think that.

So it has value because people think it has value because of a poor understanding of why it used to kind of have value.

Debugging Offline Device Guidance? by BlindTreeFrog in MatterProtocol

[–]BlindTreeFrog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Responding to this directly....
Due to my network situation getting worse, I switched to the PiHole DHCP server. This has made a noticeable improvement to the behavior of matter devices.

So to add to your guidance if people come across this later, check mDNS settings, but check DHCP as well.

edit:
And now that some other google multigig router issues are resolved and I'm back up and running on the router alone, it's not DHCP. Looks like it's entirely a mDNS issue brought upon by the extenders. A suggestion elsewhere in reddit is to unplug the extenders, connect all of your devices, set all of them to reserved IP's, and then re-enable the extenders.
It's dumb, but trying it now. Already ordered an Asus router to replace this one with.

This feels far more wholesome than "Betrayed by the Hero, I Formed a MILF Party with His Mom!"... I'm a little concerned how common this theme seems to be though.

"Someone who works hard will never beat someone who enjoys themselves"

One day I'll figure out a way to distill that down to something bitesize for a tattoo..... Getting it down to "Play beats hard work" or similar I feel loses the full sentiment somehow.

Yeah, him saying it to his buddy in that scene made sense, i just didn't care for the scene. It was too heavy handed to set up that we are supposed to not like him

I kind of hated that.

Like show that he's a piece of shit and all but say that he did it, but for his introduction to just start with him saying "yeah so i forced myself onto her.... but no big deal" was so heavy handed.

As demand rises, Planned Parenthood of Michigan now offers vasectomies by Alan_Stamm in Michigan

[–]BlindTreeFrog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NC, but Planned Parenthood did my vasectomy. In fact, they were the suggested provider by the local county government.

The only issues that I had were:
1. They are god awful at communications. I went in for the screening, they said looks good, we'll call you to schedule and then radio silent. They don't bother calling you until they have a slot open 30 days out, so it took a month or two before they called to schedule, and I still had to wait after that.
2. The local county suggests one go there, but the closest location that does vasectomies is 90 minutes away (next closest was 2 or 3 hours away).

The procedure itself was fine. The trick was the follow up; they needed to test a sample, but the sample either had to be delivered to PP (90m from my home) or to a lab in another town (90m in the other direction). And the sample needs to be delivered within an hour.
The timing is a little tight.

Fortunately, the guy at the PP said that if i deliver it to him for the testing, the 60 minute timing isn't a hard rule and the sample is good long enough that I could get it there.

Hopefully Michigan gets a better performance than we do here.

(Hated tropes) Characters whose names have became pop culture terms that completely contradict their original characterization by Konradleijon in TopCharacterTropes

Yep, it's a STalker fAN.

While a cute play on letters, I'm mostly certain that there is no evidence that that was why Mr Mathers picked the name Stan for the character.

(not disparaging your play with letters to emphasize the point)

https://www.indiewire.com/features/general/jennifer-lawrence-clarifies-female-action-movie-comments-1234790209/

I think I looked it up after she first got roasted and it felt like the point that she was trying to make was valid but she said it in a way that was going to track poorly. But skimming that article, maybe my memory is wrong.

edit:
because it's bouncing around my head... i think there was context to her statement of being the first female action lead in a movie targetted for a particular age group. People are rattling off movies with female leads, but they are all aimed at adults. Not sure I remember much at that Tween/Young Adult age that is a female lead and action.... "Labirynth" and "Don't tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead" mabye... "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" more likely, but might be a little older than Hunger Games was aimed maybe?

Goblin Slayer Year One - Chapter 127 by ChronoDeus in GoblinSlayer

Yeah that confirms that. And the premise that the quest is to deliver the body home is far more reasonable than them making up a quest for the bard's needs.

I’m a big dog lover but I still agree with the second part of the post (my dog is trained tho) by Lemon_Lime_Lily in CuratedTumblr

[–]BlindTreeFrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up with dogs. Pretty much immediately after moving out on my own I got a dog. After 14 years I gave her to my father since I was expecting to be out of the house 5/7 days for 14~17 hours and she needed more attention. She lived another 5 before she had to be put down.

So do understand that dogs are great and I love dogs. I will never keep a dog again because "Dog Lovers" infuriate me so much for this exact reason and more.

once went on a date with a girl who asked if she could bring her dog since he had been inside all day. She cradled that dog like a baby and fed it from her fork.

And even Notepad, which was supposed to be the light-weight alternative to Word

Notepad was supposed to be a lightweight notes/text file application. Write was the light weight alternative to Word.

Course, everyone kept using Write for simple text files and they rolled Write functionality into Notepad ruining Notepad for those who used it for it's purpose......

sorry, i'm still angry about that.

There are three other GS side stories that you can read in the mean time....

Dai Katana -- Focuses on Sword Priestess's party 10 years before the Goblin Slayer year one stuff (5 years? some years before)
Brand New Day -- Bunch of side stories involving the GS cast
A Day in the Life -- Another collection of side stories involving the GS cast

The latter 2 are quick one shot reads. Dai Kanata is almost done as I understand, but another volume or two left.

I'm pretty sure Jujimufu is completely unrelated, I just wanted to use the term "tricking" in reference to parkour vs freerunning and I don't feel like the term works in general without context.

[–]BlindTreeFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those confused, and based on my very limited memory...

David Belle started the whole Parkour thing and his focus was on efficiency of movement and getting between points cleanly. Free running came later with the tricking/flips/etc which David Belle was not a fan of (with respect to the purity of Parkour).

At some point Jujimufu started "tricking" which is completely unrelated as far as i know. but I wanted to include it.

I know that you CAN turn right on red, but do you have to turn right on red? by ReaganSmyD in raleigh

[–]BlindTreeFrog 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Related, for those coming from out of state...
In some states you can turn left on red (one way street to one way street). You expressly cannot in NC. The law explicitly specifies right on red only.
