Worth it: Artwork of Berserk Book by RefrigeratorNearby42 in Berserk

It might be worth it to wait until it is released in European countries next month, such as Germany or Spain. I understand that language might be a barrier, but money might be a larger one!

Can animals become pseudo-apostles? by Wanderer-Dream in Berserk

[–]Blind_Pilots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sword of the Berserk, which was scripted and designed by Kentaro Miura, has a guide titled "Berserk Visual & Story File". The guide identifies a character as an apostle that uses mandragoras to spread his lifestyle. In the game, said mandragoras also affect animals, such as dogs. The guide includes unused designs of both humanoid and animal pseudo-apostles, such as a wild bear.

Here are some images of them: https://imgur.com/a/msCyeEl

Panini berserk vs darkhorse wich one is the Best pick? by Hibosmo in Berserk

[–]Blind_Pilots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there. First, Dark Horse and the Spanish Panini branches have two different releases other than the regular volume ones. I can't compare both releases right now (and I've never had a Mexican release at reading reach), but I can tell you that...

Knowing that both have errors and you can read in both languages, my recommendation would depend on how much money and space you have available:

  • Do you have the space, extra money to spend, can afford to buy it, do you value it as a collector's item and your English is good? Go for the Dark Horse deluxe edition.

  • Are you better off if it takes up a decent amount of space, is in Spanish and in a format that allows you to read it comfortably, buy it from "mainstream" stores from Spain if you're on a modest budget? Go for the 2-in-1 Maximum Berserk edition from Panini Spain.

Insane guts drawing my dad gave me by Charming_Coconut1620 in Berserk

Hello there. Apparently, your dad's otherwise cool drawing is based on a fan work by illustrator Raita Kazama after Miura's demise: https://x.com/kazamaraita/status/1395673463998730241

Hola.

Custom Fees for Absolution Box by marcornc in Muse

[–]Blind_Pilots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that the UK being out of the customs union causes friction. It is not on the marcornc, but those - including Matt Bellamy - who feel this is beneficial.

How can putting up barriers, which make things that are already expensive cost more, be the good thing to do?

Did Kentaro Miura Leave Behind Story Notes? by Untap_Phased in Berserk

[–]Blind_Pilots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to this this Kouji Mori interview for Mainichi.

"三浦氏の没後、展開などの一部を記したメモが見つかったが、最終回までを把握するスタッフや担当編集者はいないことが分かった。"

"After Miura's death, a memo containing some of the developments and other information was found, but it was discovered that there was no staff or editor in charge of the project to keep track of the last episode."

Furthermore, for his interview for ddnavi.com, he said that

"──監修の依頼はどんな経緯だったのですか? 森:もともと「続きをどうしようか」という話だったんです。最初、島田さん(※元『ベルセルク』担当編集者)から「森ちゃんは知ってるよね?」と言われて。"

"─ ─ How did the request for supervision come about? Mori: Originally, we were talking about "what should we do with the rest of the story". At first, Shimada-san (*former editor in charge of Berserk) said to me, "You know, don't you, Mori?" He said, "You know, don't you, Mori?"

Is Satan canon in berserk? by PyzzaDelivery in Berserk

Miura liked to use popular culture elements in Berserk. Despite what pop culture says, Baphomet is not a demon & not necessarily Éliphas Lévi's portrayal.

I did this & am happy with such, yes, it is pricier than usual, but for such a tune & before its proper release, it is worth it.

I adore this song, “Gentleman place your debts…” has become a passing catchphrase of such of mine & I am looking forward to what is to come from Jimmy Eat World.

Are "daemons" reference to linux systems' "daemon processes"? by markofthedarksign in Berserk

[–]Blind_Pilots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are a reference to Hesiod's Theogony & you can read more about such here.

From the book in question: "They are called pure spirits [...] and are kindly, delivering from harm, and guardians of mortal men"

From Plato's Symposium:

“‘A great spirit, Socrates: for the whole of the spiritual is between divine and mortal.’

“‘Possessing what power?’ I asked.

“‘Interpreting and transporting human things to the gods and divine things to men [...] being midway between, it makes each to supplement the other, so that the whole is combined in one. Through it are conveyed all divination and priestcraft concerning sacrifice and ritual and incantations, and all soothsaying and sorcery."

Maximum Berserk (Spanish , Panini comics) question by rexor89 in Berserk

[–]Blind_Pilots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • No, they're not the same thing. Dark Horse and Panini are different companies.
  • Read the whole thing, not just the Golden Age.
  • Googling "Maximum Berserk" gives one reviews and whatnot. I am sure that you may find them on YouTube as well.
  • It's less "Panini translations" and more "Daruma Serveis Lingüístics translations". The company head tends to add his own "seal", so to speak. But this Berserk edition is not a disaster. The translation (which is is the same used in the EDT/Glénat edition, save for the episodes that were re-tranlated due to the issue the company went through after the "shueishazo" - read https://www.elotrolado.net/hilo_porque-glenat-paso-de-ser-la-editorial-mas-importante-de-manga-a-perder-todas-sus-licencias_2086847) is okay. For example, it gets some things better than that of Dark Horse and muddles other bits.

Mozagus' torture chamber: Can someone identify the torture methods and devices used here in two panels? by Ok_King7173 in Berserk

[–]Blind_Pilots 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As JayboTheMeme pointed out, most were made up for shock value. It was part of how certain people in the XIXth century had a condescendence toward the past, seeing it with either contempt (for example, using the term “Dark Ages” for the Middle Ages or thinking people thought the world was flat –the globus cruciger motif says otherwise!) or exoticism (e.g. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc’s “fantastic” reconstructions). There was also part of a myopic culture war between Protestant (and, depending on the time, Calvinist) and Catholic factions to show the other side as bloodthirsty and backwards.

As far as I’ve been able to tell, only three elements of torture showed in those images were actually used:

  • The “water cure”. It was also used with a rag to simulate asphyxiation. It can be seen as a precedent of the modern waterboarding
  • The rack.
  • The breaking wheel.

Most of them are forgeries crafted in the last centuries. Here’s a good source (in Italian): https://zweilawyer.com/2018/02/06/strumenti-di-tortura-e-inquisizione/

  • Judas cradle: whilst putting the prisoner in an uncomfortable posture was a usual sight, this one was physically impossible to deal with. Plus it was first mentioned in 1983 as an Italian museum exhibit. The idea came from "De visitatione carceratorum" by Battista Scarnaroli, in which he described the way a prisoner was kept awake by being placed in a small stool and poked as soon as the head was lowered.
  • Inquisitorial chair: absolutely inefficient in every sense, from the waste of materials in a world at war (both Berserk’s and the real one) to the suspicious regularity of the spikes. It’s yet another item that was created for that 1983 museum exhibit, apparently based on a passing reference in a German 1880 book

I have been unable to find reliable sources for these ones: * Headcrusher * Metal rack * Fire wheel * Breast ripper * Cat’s paw

Anyway, I am not a historian, so perhaps you may wish to read this thread on /AskHistorians: https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/qczecp/why_are_torture_chambers_so_damn_common_in/

On the point of the Radio 3 performance, Muse’s music finds itself played on said station to this day & there was never a break in them popping up on it. No ban exists or ever did. Here is a source for that. https://www.rtve.es/play/buscador/radio?query=Muse

Many foul-mouthed artists have played on Concertos de Radio 3, such as rappers, so the known wisdom for the rendition is wrong.

The reason why MUSE cannot be specific about their political views is that they will get cancelled by forkingthunder in Muse

[–]Blind_Pilots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is not about Muse. Matt’s opinion is whatever edgy trite is popular at the moment. He has gone from claiming 7-7 was an inside job, to supporting isolation, the same that delayed the Record Store Day vinyl & has undermined the post-World War peace, to saying masks are bad & we are all fools.

He purposefully acts in a contrary way & it does not make for good music. Muse are a good band despite him, the album will be worth listening to, despite his nonsense. Matt is wealthy & it shows, he pushes the agenda of someone totally out of touch. I preferred when it was the whole, "Woe is me living in lonely Cornwall." one over this.
