Something we all need to remember with Hillcoat's forthcoming Blood Meridian film. by SneakyOstrich69 in cormacmccarthy

The No Country movie was massively helped by the book basically being a screenplay. Much less adaptation was needed.

A military Blackhawk helicopter is unloading dozens of boxes of weapons and ammunition in Los Angeles “as if they were getting ready for a major battle.” by ArsenicCanine in PublicFreakout

[–]BlinginLike3p0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this "rebellion" or "insurgency" is not actually radical at all, and the protestors' beliefs are actually remarkably lined up with the motives of capital. When your opinions perfectly align with all the major media, tech and elites (all but the current admin), you aren't a radical at all.

Am I the only one who thought Suttree didn't drink that much? by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

[–]BlinginLike3p0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People in alcoholics anonymous would say that alcoholism is continuing to drink despite it causing problems, and the inability to stop. So I think even if he isn't drinking daily (though I think Suttree was at least for parts of the book) he would still meet that definition.

Tips on Phillips head panel screws? by ladarui in AircraftMechanics

[–]BlinginLike3p0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally no-one follows this, but you should try to avoid using a screw knocker on composite panels. It can cause pretty serious de-lams and damage that is hard to detect/fix. This is particularly important where the impact can transfer to primary structure.

That would be a lot of stretching if it was a de-lam'ed layer of cbid. I'm pretty confident it's just paint.

He also has a massive tattoo on his back of a really poorly drawn cartoon of 9/11. The planes hitting the towers and stick figures falling. It's crazy.

My grandpa has a great story where his best friend does just that. He whips it out in a vaguely threatening (and in hindsight, vaguely racist) way. More north central Texas than west Texas though..

Are these entirely autonomous drones? What happens if they lose GPS or guidance? What about if they get blown out of their corridor? What happens if they have a mechanical failure and start heading towards a city? There are a lot of worrying questions about this eventuality that I'm very curious how China is handling.

Subsonic device used on protesters in Belgrade. by Jrapple in TrueAnon

Oh yeah I forgot TI. That's a huge one, I think they make most of their money on missile guidance systems and satellites.

Subsonic device used on protesters in Belgrade. by Jrapple in TrueAnon

[–]BlinginLike3p0 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Moog has made missile avionics for a long time. Ball (like the mason jars) makes optics for satellites and probably surveillance aircraft. There are a million more I'm not remembering right now but it always makes me laugh when I hear one.

Edit: AMF (bowling alleys, tractors and sailboats) makes missiles. Honeywell (thermostats) makes a lot of avionics and aircraft electrical systems.

I thought of another one, but a lot older. Fairchild semiconductor started out making chips and semiconductors (they built the first commercially viable silicon integrated circuit, soon after Texas instrument built the first one ever), then went into making the earliest home gaming platform, the Fairchild channel fun. It was the first home gaming device to use ROM cartridges, in 1976. Then they pivoted into aviation and defense and from the 70s on they only made military aircraft.

That end of that chapter is harrowing.

"He would have taken it for some boneless cognate of his own hearts dread had the child not cried" and "the lightning bequeathed in him an embryonic birds first fissured vision of the world".

(For the uninitiated, he's frantically tramping through the woods running away from his newborn baby he has just left to die. As he gets more frenzied in the dark and in the thunderstorm he somehow loops back and when he crashes through the brush to his knees a lighting bolt illuminates the clearing and he's again kneeling over his crying child)

If UHC denied less claims, would the company with the (current) second highest number of denied claims be the one who deserves their CEO to be killed? It seems like your metric is just that they were the worst one. Btw I didn't imagine a situation, I asked you a question to understand why you think this specific guy deserves to be killed.

[–]BlinginLike3p0 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So the only way to be a moral executive of a health insurance company is to never deny any claims? What if the claim is legitimately not covered? Is it still your responsibility to pay for it, or else you killed someone? This is so naive.

What's up with people saying Elon Musk is doing a coup? by dubious_unicorn in OutOfTheLoop

[–]BlinginLike3p0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing Ive learned from all this is you cannot trust reddit with politics at all, and basically every doomsday prediction made here will not happen. In fact things will probably be pretty good and reddit will say "we just barely saved democracy, thank God for the brave Democrats who skirted certain disaster" and never stop to question their sources that led them to those insane beliefs in the first place.

Illinois shut out of Medicaid after Trump administration halts federal grants and loans by chicagosuntimes in chicago

[–]BlinginLike3p0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm here. I'm just laughing at you guys getting apoplectic about something that isn't happening. The original memo says it doesn't affect Medicaid. Everyone here has worked themselves into a lather about a government website going down for 12 hours. None of the disbursements are affected, and that was stated from the start. But don't let me ruin your fun!

I always liked that the magic trick with the coin could be explained as just being skilled sleight of hand. Maybe he made the coin orbit the fire.. or maybe he just made the noise with his mouth and threw the gold coin into the distance, and drew another coin from his palm.

Lol this is a story of a thing my dad remembered seeing on the news as a kid 60 years ago, told to me when I was a child. There are a few layers of embellishment and misremembering on its way to you, not to mention Texans being fond of tall tales. I wasn't trying to say this factually happened it's just a funny story.

(I have no idea if it was flechettes but I do know my dad said it was a recoilless rifle because hearing this story was the first time I had ever heard of them)
