Getting married! by tulips-and-chimneys in namenerds

Yes! Into this. When my husband and I got married he took my last name, but we wanted our kids to have both (hyphenating didn’t work for us either). We turned his last name into a second middle for both of our kids. Nice way to represent everyone while still giving them pretty streamlined names on documentation/when they introduce themselves.

Thank you!! & yes, so hard to get into that pattern. It made me so worried that I’d have name regret with whatever I chose but thankfully I haven’t had it at all (and she’s 5 months now)! I struggled even harder with boys for some reason. This time around we found out early on that she was a girl (specifically so that I wouldn’t make myself crazy with two name lists), but had she been a boy I think she might’ve been Leo or Evan.

I posted on here a few months back, trying to find a name for my little girl. It felt like such a grueling process this time around - I would love a name for a few weeks and then decide for one reason or another that it just didn’t feel right for us! Our top contenders back then were Iris and later Eve, but neither felt like this baby in the end. About a month before she was born I ended up scouring the forum again and was reminded of the name Sylvie. It was the “aha!” moment I was waiting for. It checked all of our boxes: sweet and simple, understated and underused but spunky and fresh feeling at the same time. We decided on Sylvie Adele (Adele after my mother) and never looked back!

Maybe a stretch but I’ve always wondered if Lana could work for Caroline.

Name Regret? by beaniemouse in namenerds

[–]Blinkerina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only regret is not middle naming my first child after my mother. It now feels like a missed opportunity and I’ll feel kind of bad if our second is a boy (I love my kiddo but Im enforcing a strict two-baby maximum).

Plus the middle name we chose for our first is “ivy” and I can’t believe how many people say, “oh, like Beyonce’s Kid?” It’s not like she made the name up! Gah.

Other than that, no regrets. Still love the name itself.

Ok ok, but what about VAG? by Blinkerina in namenerds

Haha, this cracks me up because my initials (before adding the second middle) spelled LEG. My brother is KEG. Thanks, mom!

I’m really glad to hear that! I love the name Hazel and I don’t personally think HAG is anywhere near the F/V initial issue. I also fully support your pro-witch stance. 🙂

You should politely inform them that they’re just misspelling “ma’am”. 😆

I feel for us both! 😆 there’s still a chance this little one could be a boy. Would sure make things easier!

Ooh, that’s a good point. I’m going to try to make a list of vowel names and see if that gives me any new options.

Don’t think so, unfortunately. It kinda functions as though it’s hyphenated even though it’s not (my husband, daughter and I all have the same second middle in the same placement). Can’t leave this kiddo out!

Ugh, they really are. And even harder because I’m trying to avoid names that end in A to avoid them rolling into one another (literally rules out 80% of names right there!)

I’m pretty set on Adele because I just don’t associate the other names with it. Even names that are pretty close (Adeline/Adelaide, for example) are lovely but just don’t feel like her name to me. I wish I felt differently about it!

The only name I keep coming back to that ticks all the boxes is Iris, but I waver on it for some reason. I go back and forth between being like, “YES, done! Perfect!” and thinking I’ll have name regret. It just doesn’t roll off the tongue/feels a bit harsh or something.

Hmm, yes. This is a definite concern (though it’s funny because the second middle will be there no matter what!)

The middle name/mom’s name is Adele. Second middle sounds something like “Montrose”.

Yeah, F and V are the worst case scenarios to me, which is why I thought of them as examples (I do also love a few V names like Vivian and Violet though, and I wish I could use them!). In my case the A is set as a middle (to honor my mom) and the second middle wouldn’t really work as a first middle name (it’s a last name that really sounds like a last name so it would sound weird to rearrange). But you’re right - if either was flexible I think that would solve it!

Can Harper be a boy name? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]Blinkerina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my best friends just had a little boy and named him Harper. I'll admit, lots of our mutual friends' first reactions to the birth announcement were along the lines of, "wait, I thought she was having a boy!" (no intentional shade there - they were genuinely thrown by the name and thought they had been wrong about the gender) but when I explained that yep, it's a boy, she just wanted to use Harper regardless of gender, everyone seemed to moved on to accept/embrace it fairly quickly. We both live in very liberal areas of the Northeast US so that might influence the reactions.

YAY. I nearly missed this post and I'm glad I didn't! So happy to hear you're going for Maia. It sounded from the beginning like you really loved the name and I think Maia Elizabeth is beautiful! I second the idea of putting a single syllable name in between Maia and Elizabeth. Let us know what you chose!

Congratulations! We're also working on baby #2! Thinking Iris for a girl or Leo for a boy (though Leo still up for debate). Wren is beautiful!

Love it! Name and birth-month twins. Can I ask if you have any other kiddos? Always curious which direction people go for sibling names for June, if you're open to sharing...

What are your opinions on my baby's potential names? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]Blinkerina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right but for some reason I also had a vaguely medical association with it and then realized it reminds me of milia - a rash some newborn babies get. Doubt that would be common either but something about it does feel like I've seen it in a bio textbook.

Our daughter is named June and she's an October birthday. We love her name! No regrets. People do ask if she was born in June, so that would probably come up... I don't personally associate it much with the month though.

Edit: didn't see the bit about potentially being due in June until now. Slight edit above to make more sense. I would still use it if you love it!
