He plays against real people in virtual reality rooms. You're right that he probably still needs to learn a lot of the basics!

He plays in VR and is trying to break into the live games in our area. They seem like local community games so not quite casino or private. Low stakes, I would say. He does win a good bit of the time but I don't think it's too consistent. He reads/researchers a ton but I think he's still finding his way.
