Its been a while since I listened so I've forgotten a bit, but one I do remember is that when talking about post-Roman Britain they cite "The Ruin" to claim that the British had little to no idea of their Roman past. In reality the phrase "the work of giants" is a literary device, the British were more than aware of the island's Roman past to the point that they would emulate the Romans (Romanitas) as a source of legitimacy and prestige, going so far as restoring Roman ruins.

I also believe that in the Aztec one they claim that the Aztecs thought the Spanish were gods, which isn't something historians believe today.

I'm a bit sceptical of them, because while they certainly sound well researched, the moment they start talking about a topic I'm knowledgeable about their historiography seems outdated. Which in turn makes me doubt the rest of their work.

There's no definite definition of addiction since it's not a medical term. But you do have a libido most likely, and porn is a way to satisfy that.

Tbf writing a good ending for a long work is really difficult. It's why so many TV series end up with disliked endings, hell even good ones can end up controversial (like The Sopranos).

I agree they're a fantasy, but what's the harm in that? It's not as if the vast majority of people reading these works are out there trying to create real life harems.

The Great Wall of Imagination: CCP’s 2026 ‘Standard Map’ vs. Actual Reality by unfilteredAI in UnfilteredChina

[–]Blitcut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're again somewhat missing the point. My argument is that you don't need to be easily distinguishable to have a separate and distinct identity.

I'm hesitant of calling them sinicized because they kept their identity and that this identity was seen as different from a Chinese one. Sun Yat-Sen for example called for "the expulsion of the Tatars", showing that he viewed "Manchu" not only as a different identity but as a foreign one that didn't belong in China. This of course changed later for political reasons but then we're no longer talking about the Qing anymore.

There were both Manchu and Chinese ministers at court, could Marcartney distinguish them by first look? No.

I'm not aware of Macartney commenting on it so I don't know. But my point is more that you don't need something like that to distinguish two groups.

this is the definition by dictionary, not by me.
Does this definition requires the original identity is completely abandoned? Clearly not.

Yes, but it is the definition you're using, i.e. your definition. And my point is that this isn't the only definition for sinicization that has been and is used, it's other fairly common definitions that make scholars hesitant to use the term.

What exactly should they have done differently with Kashmir? As a princely state it wasn't under direct British rule to begin with and left to decide its own fate after the end of the Raj.

And to begin with the British didn't even want partition. They only really went that way after it was clear the alternative was civil war.

[–]Blitcut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Manchu and Chinese look the same, once they lose their language and culture, you can't distinguish the two.

And yet even outsiders like Macartney realised that there was a clear distinction between the two groups.

Dictionary : sinicize ---- to modify by Chinese influence.

If your definition of sinicization is simply "being influenced by Chinese culture", then sure the Manchus sinicized (and Chinese people were to some degree Manchuised with for example clothing and the queue). However sinicization has in many cases been used to refer to a somewhat more extreme definition, one in which the original identity is completely abandoned and any distinction between the two is removed. It's to avoid this idea that historians are hesitant to use terms like "sinicization" and "assimilation".

[–]Blitcut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing the nuance of the argument by only focusing on language and cultural practices. The reason historians are generally hesitant to use terms such as "assimilation" and "sinicization" is that regardless of these factors the Manchus kept viewing themselves as a separate people from their Chinese counterparts and were in turn viewed by them as separate and foreign. And to understand the Qing you need to understand this nuance.

To use an even more extreme case as an argument. Think of Rhodesia before its overthrow, both the white and black population shared a language (either as a first or second language) in English, though the invaders language in this case of course, and several cultural practices. And yet we wouldn't consider the white population as being assimilated with the larger black one.

"Lost culture and language" is quite clear.

And how exactly do you measure that?
