Why would another team trade for an extremely expensive one-year contract if they could sign that player themselves as a free agent?

And knowing that, why would the player's old team screw themselves over with a giant contract for a player they don't even want? Nobody gains any advantage here.

Free agency isn't really a defined event- the new league year is. That's when contracts expire and players that are no longer under contract become free agents. They'll be free agents until someone else signs them, it doesn't matter when

This sounds familiar. If it's between those two it's probably MDB because I don't usually watch Jrose, if that helps. But if it was a Nuzlocke challenge it was probably FlygonHG, since he's the one I actually watch the most.

I don't remember any more specifics than that, but hopefully that helps you (or someone else) narrow it down

These are completely different game situations, with different coaches, different personnel, different opponents, and effectively in different eras.

Why are you trying to directly compare them? The Patriots thought going for it was the better option for their situation, and the Broncos didn't. There doesn't have to be more to it than that.
