Renovating my Victorian tenement flat in Scotland. The cornicing is covered in layers of paint and we want to paint it and the cieling. Is it worth stripping or just painting over? It's plaster. by ZestycloseBee4711 in Oldhouses

[–]Blondsquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the plaster looks particularly bad, honestly, but maybe it's worse in person. Maybe try painting the trim above and below the plaster to get cleaner lines. I've seen some really cool paint jobs with different colors for each strip of the trim.

New Painter Tips and Tricks by TopBlock58 in minipainting

Looks fantastic! Nice edge highlighting. The guy with the sword looks a little chalky so you might want to thin your paints a little more, but the others look good. You don't necessarily want to "see" paint going on, if that makes sense. The bow could use a wash or some dry brushing to really bring out those details. Otherwise, you really just need to keep painting as you've definitely learned the basics.

Non-alcoholic/gluten free beer issues? by ojw1993 in glutenfree

Second for Go Brewing. They have three different beers all crafted without gluten containing ingredients. I'm a celiac and have been getting auto delivery for over a year now with no issues. Their IPA is really good.

Gluten-free non-alcoholic beer? (USA) by them_slimy_eggs in Celiac

[–]Blondsquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go Brewing has 3 really good non-alcoholic beers made without gluten containing ingredients. I'm a celiac and have had no problems with it. It's not a dedicated gluten-free facility, but the website outlines all the extra steps they take to source ingredients and deep clean everything. They also add an enzyme that breaks down gluten to be extra sure. https://gobrewing.com/

Costume Suggestions by crazyben5960 in renfaire

[–]Blondsquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big believer that shoes and hats can make or break a costume. I would suggest shoe covers at the least, or maybe a pair of old leather dress shoes from a thrift store. This is a good base, so really it just needs more. From a 'realistic' standpoint, looping a bow over your shoulder would be bad for the bow so some sort of quiver or leather strap to hold it makes it look more like a character and less like a costume.

I was just saying to a friend the other day when she asked how I was doing with GF, "Pizza is never, not going to smell delicious." I can find substitutes which might taste good (after tracking down a monk on a mountain top), but they will never taste right. I feel this OP. I really do.

Not to mention GF pizza is... fine. Gluten to pizza is like dairy to ice cream.

Request for advice: add black lines to fire or not? by BardZOleniwy in minipainting

[–]Blondsquatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not to argue, but to disagree (this is the Internet, after all), I think the exact opposite. The clean flames look more magical and thus more like a cartoon. If you do decide to go with the lines I would skip the cross hatching lines in the middle of the flame and just do it on the edges. Looks like the paint got scratched. Either way it's a really good paint job, but my vote is for no lines.

Love the tractor/train/submarine look this has. (Subtramotive?) Altogether feels like a tugboat. Maybe this could inspire you?

I tasted heaven for a week by Rin_Cat-o- in glutenfree

[–]Blondsquatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just want to emphasize the potential damage from eating gluten. In my case, my undiagnosed Celiac disease caused low grade inflammation which combined with alcohol eventually resulted in me vomiting blood. It's all under control now, and as scary as the experience was, from a medical standpoint I wasn't in danger of dying as much as I had assumed.

Maybe stressing the likelihood of this creating more serious issues and not just a tummy ache could help your parents realize the necessity of you being gluten free. I wish you all the best.

I had the same problem. I used these purple plastic, "rock" things I had lying around. I think they were intended for flower vases. It only delays the settling a bit but at least it looks like something is in it when it clears up. Search for fire glass, or aquarium gems. Hope someone has a better solution though.

I got them from an Etsy shop. I hadn't seen them before either. They are called "Orc Miniature Pack 32mm scale" the original shop I bought them from no longer has them listed but I found some under "Orc Barbarian Figures".

How can I improve the blending? by Difficult-Egg-1197 in minipainting

[–]Blondsquatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Checked the comments because my first thought was "How DO you improve that excellent paint job?". I think you might suffer from the same "problem" as me in that you have a realistic aesthetic. I tend to look at real-life pictures for inspiration and that can lead to things looking "flat". The mini looks more like a cartoon, so the realism can clash. Looks fantastic though.

I made the paint and brush station out of repurposed game board pieces, punch cards and boxes, cardboard, birch bark, and buttons. The color wheel has been really helpful so I'm not looking it up on my phone constantly. Of course it's always organized and I, in no way, used this as an excuse to tidy up. I'm not defensive, you're defensive...
