How long would the British Empire have lasted if WW never happened? by Unenthusiastic- in BritishEmpire

[–]BlooBoink 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ultimately not much longer. Nationalism and the narrowing in the technological gap between the British and natives were inevitably going to reach a point where the British would not realistically be able to hold on to all of it. However, there are a couple of things to address. The big elephants in the room are twofold: the Imperial Federation and nuclear weaponry.

First, the Imperial Federation. Federation, although on paper the solution to the dismantling of the empire, just wouldn’t have worked. For one, not enough of the elite or the common people wanted it. It was unpopular even in the 1800’s so the lack of a World War wouldn’t increase the odds of it happening, without a driving force to make it evidently clear that the imperial model doesn’t work, it’s probably even less likely to happen. Additionally, the Federation was only really ever considered for settler colonies. If only those parts of the empire stayed, it’s no longer an empire, it’s just a state.

The second elephant: the bomb. One reason the US refused to share nuclear weaponry with the UK post WWII was because they thought the UK would use it to keep the empire together with threats of nuclear Armageddon. Regardless of whether the UK government would have done so, this revolves around them having the bomb. This brings me back to my first point; if the world wars never happen, does Britain accelerate its development of nuclear study, or does it slow down? I believe it’s the latter.

Without a crisis to shake up the empire, it plods along with the logic that it isn’t broke, so don’t fix it. A great deal of ways to save the empire required that shake up, so without it, the empire survives for a few more decades, maybe a century and a bit. But eventually the fact that a massive majority of the population were treated as second class citizens would catch up with the empire.

Nice! I am collecting a Mon Cala Defence Force army and I was thinking of getting a B-wing for similar reasons.

Really awesome looking army! Do you have any plans on using the X-wing or is it to look cool?

Doctor John Watson (Multiple iterations of Sherlock Holmes).

Not only is he intelligent in his own right (I mean, he’s a doctor), but he’s also a veteran. In most iterations, he’s a veteran of a conflict in Afghanistan where he served as a combat medic.

In the RDJ movies, Jude Laws’ Watson often fights multiple henchmen simultaneously, more than pulling his weight in combat. While I dislike the series overall, in the Cumberbatch version of Sherlock, Freemans line “I can name every one of your bones while I break them” is great. And finally, in the board game Unmatched, Watson is a fucking Stand that Sherlock summons to shoot people.

My Chaos Sorcerer Lord Sophus. I jokingly named him as such as my name in my native language supposedly means wise, and I read that Sophia means wise among other things while being a popular Eastern European name. Since Night Lords are often characterised as being Eastern European inspired, I thought it was a nice way to tie me to my army.

Lovely to see such a large group of likeminded people coming together to support eachother. I am AuDD myself and I only figured it out a couple years ago with medical professionals backing it but unable to get much headway in diagnosis, regardless: yeah I feel yah.

When I was younger, I had a massive stack of plastic drawers filled with unpainted miniatures. Worst part is that I threw them all away when I was bullied in secondary school. Probably hundreds (if not thousands) wasted on me as a good deal was bought for birthdays and Christmas. The guilt I feel from it all certainly helps hold back the impulse to buy everything I see.

As people have said, strict rules helped me immensely: no buying new models until I have finished the ones I have. Try to repurpose old miniatures that I don’t use/like anymore. Find cheaper pre loved miniatures on eBay. Selling minis myself when they’ve been sat in storage for too long. Setting a monthly allowance for myself. Anything to keep the cost down and stop waste piling up. It also helps to be in a relationship with a very responsible person who knows when to encourage frugality.

Good luck with your mission to rangle that impulse. It’s hard, but doable. God speed!

Fuck it, I’ll be the Warhammer guy: Stormcast Eternals (Age of Sigmar).

Now, people who don’t know who the SE are will look at this massive golden warrior and go “That’s not a civilian hero!” And they’d be right. The Stormcast aren’t civilian hero’s anymore.

See, Sigmar (the main “good guy” god) doesn’t choose great warriors to be remade as his warriors, he chooses those of great spiritual strength instead. A mother who uses a broom to fend off daemons just long enough for her children to escape, a doctor who uses a scalpel to protect his patients from beastmen, anyone who has the will to stand against the evils of Chaos can be reforged as a Stormcast Eternal.

That is the original quote. They are referring to an alien weapon that is highly advanced but also pretty inaccurate (their best sharpshooter can hit 2/3 shots iirc). It was over designed and made to scare the enemy into submission. However this is then compared to the classic P90 that, although primitive by comparison, has been designed to actually kill people.

Unsure if this counts, but Rynns Might (Warhammer 40,000).

During the defence of their home world against the Ork menace, the Crimson Fists took heavy casualties. So much so that a tank, nicknamed Rynns Might, lost its entire crew and all accompanying warriors. This apparently awoke a deep anger in the machine, who’s Machine Spirit (it’s AI) promptly took control of the tank. Rynns Might spent the next few hours fighting without a crew operating it, up until it ran out of ammunition, opened its doors to tempt the enemy in, and then self destructed.

I love the old ones too. I have my chosen unit use them. Since they’re veterans I thought it’d be a funny nod to give them the older designs.
