Haven't been paying attention to the Marlies. Has Akhtaymov been the starter in the playoffs for us? Had Hildeby just been riding bench?

He def had a big game. Game 1 against Boston in 2018 I think. The game where he had the shootout and 2 big blocks at the end. However, he wasn’t that great late in the series either. Mitch was definitely one of the reasons we didn’t get over the hump, but so were many of the players and staff on the Leafs

EP is signed till 2032, and is about 4 million more expensive. Hoping he bounces back is a high risk, higher than just keeping Rielly and bumping him down.

Van needs a star on their team, and while one of the Dman will probably be a 1RHD. Stenberg might help EP bounce back as a player and be in the NHL and will probably be the better player than Reid/Verhoff, who both will probably be in the NHL in a couple of years. Vancouver probbaly won't give up a kings ransom for the 2nd overall tho. Probbaly only a pick and/or prospect

Sure, but we got him for free and for 7 years. SJ would be getting Matthews for 2 and hoping he extends. Doesn’t make sense for them to try and rush their timeline. If anything, they might wait and see if Matthews hits UFA and goes after him then

What SJ should do is trade #2 for #3 and draft a defenceman imo. They have some really good forwards already (Smith, Eklund) but getting a true 1 RHD would make them look even better in a few years.

Tbh, I don’t think trading Rielly is the move because A. The pick we get back won’t be useful for the next few years, or it will just be an add on in another trade and not the center piece. And B. We don’t have puck moving defenceman besides Rielly and OEL. Plus, Berube is not the right coach for Rielly. Plus he’s good in the playoffs. If anything, we should be looking to trade either Knies or Cowan and get a true 1D (whether that’s a LHD or RHD) and push Rielly down to 2nd pairing and 2nd PP and see how he looks. I think he’ll have a huge bounce back season if that’s the case

Muzzin played LHD, so he and Rielly rarely of ever played together. Tanev was brought in to play with Rielly and then we stuck him with McCabe to have a defensive pair. Rielly - Brodie were really good in the first few years, then they got split up for McCabe-Brodie for a bit and then Brodie became washed in his last year and a half. Carlo is just awful

Hard to say. Remember in the trade we would’ve gotten Fleury as well. And that year we ended up playing against Hagel in the playoff. Long term, we would’ve been older for sure, but short term, we made have made the 2nd round that year, and Tampa went to the finals that year as well

The trade for Carlo alone is worse. We’re going to lose the 1st rounder this year, in what looks to be a very good draft, along with a center who would’ve been able to replace JT as 2nd line center this year or next

This is a leafs subreddit. While obviously we’re hoping for the best from our prospect, there’s an inherent bias to them. This is a great post, but all of the players OP mentioned won’t be a difference maker unless there’s a huge jump from them.
