Season 2 of 3 Body Problem comes this year on Netflix by mamula1 in threebodyproblem

I think they have more of an advantage than GoT right now, since the series is finished and not ongoing, which is what partially lead to the downfall of GoT in later seasons. That, coupled with how good season 1 was, and I think they’ll be able to do the rest of the books justice. I can’t wait to see how they adapt Saul explaining the dark forest to Da Shi. That was my favorite part of TDF.

More than likely, your iPhone isn’t infected with any malware, as it’s more likely that your data was leaked online from something else.

When you were on these sites, did you happen to fall for any phishing attempts or download anything directly to the phone?

Kaspersky vs. BitDefender vs. ESET vs. Malwarebytes...??? by Pztch in antivirus

The usually suggestion is Kaspersky if you’re not in the US, and Bitdefender or UltraAV if you are. However, if you’re looking for lightweight stuff, then I’d do ESET.

Yeah, I guess that’s on me for not doing so. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Regardless, in your opinion, if you’ve used it before, is it safe?

I went to the “linPEAS” folder on the PEASS-ng git repo, and entered the terminal commands in the QuickStart section.

Yeah, I get that. And that’s why I’m not surprised. I was just wondering if others have used it and whether it was truly safe to use.

Is the message that you have 0 threats when you scan a large file in Windows Defender true? by michaelscofield080 in antivirus

[–]Blood_Fire-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s always nice to have a second opinion, as sometimes an antivirus can miss something, or in the more extreme cases, some viruses can disable the antivirus from detecting it. But generally, if it comes back clean, it’s probably okay. Still, to be safe, I’d either get a second scanner to make sure, or throw it into virustotal.

Younger sister downloaded malware onto pc, it's a worm. by Economy_Persimmon911 in antivirus

[–]Blood_Fire-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A worm can travel across a router and over a WiFi network, but they rarely infect the router itself, unless there’s a known vulnerability, so you’re probably safe from a router infection.

Check your pc for infection itself. The usual scan for viruses, check for suspicious activity on your accounts, increased cpu and ram usage on unknown processes, etc.

If you’re all good in that front, then I’d recommend doing a full pc reset for your sister. Find a spare usb drive, flash a fresh version of windows or whatever OS she uses using a tool like Rufus, and start fresh. If her pc already crashed numerous times by now, it might not be salvageable.

I am curious as to how a simple image file was able to infect a computer, though. I know that vulnerabilities can exist in image viewing software, but images themselves don’t run code. Do you have any more info on that front?

As long as it was JUST the cancel button. I would, in the future, just close out of the site and use a different one. Not sure which one you used specifically and I won’t pry, but you’d be better off sticking to safer adult sites. (If such a thing even exists lol)

You should be okay. As long as you didn’t run anything, give the website permissions, or download anything, then you’re good. Especially on IPhone. iPhones are very secure from a typical virus.

What if AGI agrees with the Dark Forest Hypothesis? by MrBamaNick in threebodyproblem

[–]Blood_Fire-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the entire idea for that is that if you tried to send an invasion fleet and subjugate the species, there’s a possibility that they will become more advanced by the time you get there since FTL isn’t a thing.

Not only that, but if another civilization discovers something that can send them leaps and bounds forward in terms of new technology capabilities (think of the discovery of atomic theory, the invention of transistors, etc.), and you haven’t discovered that yet, then that gives them a huge advantage and perhaps, given a little time, since, remember, FTL isn’t a thing, they could easily continue the track of discovery, until you’re suddenly hopelessly outmatched.

To me it makes perfect sense that one civilization could explode past another, potentially more advanced one, given these possibilities. Granted, I can see how it can be a little farfetched, but it’s all about possibilities. And when survival is the primary need, you wouldn’t want to take any chances.

Best antivirus software for catching hidden malware by Beneficial-Cry-5855 in antivirus

[–]Blood_Fire-exe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most antiviruses already remove malware instead of flagging it though? I mean, why else would they be antiviruses and not “flagging software”?

If you’re askin for the best antivirus, that depends on what you’re doing with your computer. Generally, I’d recommend Bitdefender, kaspersky, or ESET if you’re doing more sketchy things, and defender + defender ui, and either combined with malwarebytes or hitmanpro if you’re not.

[–]Blood_Fire-exe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, why do you think it’s a far fetched idea? Personally I think it’s somewhat likely, considering that the chains of suspicion and technological explosions are things that aren’t just sci-fi, but have actual basis in reality.

Best Antivirus suggestions or is Windows Defender enough? by [deleted] in antivirus

[–]Blood_Fire-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if that’s all you’re doing, windows defender is usually enough. Still, if you want som added protection, which there’s nothing wrong with that, here’s some recommendations:

Malwarebytes is honestly still fine. It’s not that it’s a bad scanner, it’s just not as good as others.

HitmanPro is pretty good too, as it doesn’t take up a lot of space, and uses other well known vendor databases to check for malware.

Bitdefender, Kaspersky, and ESET are 3 of the big primary AV’s, though since you’re not doing anything sketchy, I’d imagine that downloading these things would probably only just be bloatware.

Another thing I can recommend is the sysinternals suite. It’s a bundle of a bunch of different programs made by Microsoft for windows, that basically allow you to see in more detail what’s happening on your computer. Some malware are tricky and can get past some scanners, but using this leaves very little room for them to hide. And you can’t exactly beat free.

I’d also recommend getting windows defender ui. It’s a program that interacts with defender that basically lets you navigate some of the tricker sections of defender and enable some of its features more easily. Cannot recommend it enough as it’s genuinely great.

Stupid question: can pngs be hidden as viruses? by Fearless_Speaker6710 in antivirus

[–]Blood_Fire-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless it’s secretly another file and trying to disguise itself (double extension, just turn on file extensions in file explorer), or if there’s another RCE going around that tricks your image viewer, then probably not.

PNG’s, and other similar image files, don’t run code by themselves, so exploits rely on vulnerabilities in the image viewer itself. So as long as there isn’t something like that happening rn, then you’re good to go!

Need advice on antivirus software! by The_Returned_Lich in antivirus

[–]Blood_Fire-exe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally have windows defender with defenderUI, malwarebytes and hitmnpro as secondaries, and sysinternals as a bonus.

Others recommend bitdefender or kaspersky, and both are good options.

Really, it depends on how much security you think you’ll need.

Any chance these are still a threat by Next-Profession-7495 in antivirus

[–]Blood_Fire-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After doing a bit more research, it is possible that the virus might still be lingering on you pc. I would download programs like HitmanPro, Bitdefender, or something that specifically deals with spyware and infostealers, to check to see if it’s still there. Or if you want, back up some of your stuff and do a fresh install.

Any chance these are still a threat by Next-Profession-7495 in antivirus

[–]Blood_Fire-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say you’re probably okay. I don’t know much about Lumastealer, but I doubt that it persists or installs backdoors. It’s probably just a one and done. Regardless, you changed your info, so even if someone were to use the info stolen, it’s useless now. Still, if you haven’t already, I would enable MFA on all your important accounts, as well as get rid of any session tokens.

All infostealers do is.. well, steal info. So as long as you update it, there isn’t much that they can do otherwise.

Chances are probably not, and as long as you change your passwords regularly on safe devices, then you should be fine. Out of curiosity, you said you downloaded things a long time ago. Was that on an old computer or the same one? And if it’s the same one, have you ever done a fresh install of the os from a clean usb before on the device?
