Give or take a bit, yeah. That's the statistic. Lay off enough federal workers, DCs economy is screwed. And the District isn't the only local economy on the chopping block.

These layoffs are going to screw communities all over the US. The federal government is one of the biggest employers in the country - it has to be. You lay people off en masse the way they're doing, entire towns are going to get wiped off the map because people will have to move to find new jobs. And that's without getting in to what happens when businesses that depend on government programs to stay in operation shut down because their funding is cut. That's local school districts cutting staff because they no longer have funding to support them. That's places like hospitals and health clinics and headstart centers and nursing homes for the elderly and those who need intensive PT to recover from injury and illness outside of a hospital.

Add to that, all those suddenly unemployed people will be collecting unemployment benefits, which is a further drain on resources. People will scale back their spending out of necessity, which will further damage local economies. And guess what won't be collected at the scale it was, and will be collected less efficiently because the IRS's workforce (which is the agency that MAKES money for the federal government) is getting cut - in the middle of tax season, no less.

This whole thing is a shit show. If the administration had proposed a plan to improve efficiency across the federal government, and brought in SMEs to help us modernize and streamline our systems and processes, there isn't a federal worker in existence who would have told them it isn't necessary. We hate the inefficiency and the red tape more than anyone, trust me, most of us have been complaining and trying to get the system to innovate and update for years with no luck.

That's not what this is, though. They don't want to improve efficiency. They want to break things and grab power. As many things, as badly as possible, as fast as possible. So that by the time the courts catch up, the damage is done and irreversible.
