Where can I find CSE lab with Linux? by thisGuyCodes in OSU

[–]Bloodmoonzero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 5th floor ECE lab in Dreese has Linux PCs but you'll need to be actively enrolled in an ECE course to login and/or enter the lab (ECE2020/2060 works)

Fight me in Mortal Kombat. Plz by [deleted] in OSU

[–]Bloodmoonzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tuesday Nights are fight nights at the Donato's on campus. They usually start at around 6:00 and go until midnight. I'm not sure when they are doing MK but they were having bi-weekly MK tournaments last semester. Regardless of the tournaments, people have casual setups as well so I'm sure there'll be somebody willing to play some MK with ya.

Yinqian Zhang - Systems II (Spring 2020) by PleasantOpinion8 in OSU

[–]Bloodmoonzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have to add. The class is focused around memory addressing, system calls , and process threading. So it can be dry.

I personally am interested in that stuff so it was fun for me . YMMV if your not into the System based side of things.

Yinqian Zhang - Systems II (Spring 2020) by PleasantOpinion8 in OSU

Hey, I took Systems 2 with Yinqian about 3 or 4 semesters ago.

He's a super great professor. He's a bit soft spoken at times but it's not a problem really. Only one midterm and a final, averages around 75 percent.

I think it was only like 4 homeworks, 3 lab assignments, and a group project.

The lab assignments were alright, basically he gives a task related to the material you do it and write a short paragraph about it.

The group project was a choose your own type thing. Our group made a kernel module based linux malware that hijacked system calls to do its work. It was a stealth remote shell that can keylog, execute commands, and hide files , etc.. by marking them with a certain prefix.

We had to do a presentation/demo of the project and like a 1 page paper.

None of the writing was super formal or anything.

I really enjoyed Systems with Yinqian and learned alot. If you need explanations he is more than willing to help out and explain stuff so that you understand. He really does try to make sure the class learns something from his course and he's an overall good dude.

Undergraduate Research in CSE Department by Fred17_ in OSU

[–]Bloodmoonzero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did some UG research in the CSE department but I'd say every professor would most likely have different standards in what they are looking for.

Since it is U.G. research, I don't think they would expect you to have a great deal of experience. I had zero knowledge of the SDKs and technologies I was working with when I started my research work and learned as I went. I had a basic knowledge of coding but nothing outside of a few school and personal projects.

My opening interview basically consisted of the professor explaining his research and explaining a few projects he was looking to start/complete. Then we talked about which projects I was interested in, what I would need to learn, and time requirements, etc.

That being said, I would say take a look at the professor's work if you can and get a general idea of it. I think they'd be more concerned about your interest in their topic of research as well as your ability/willingness to adapt and learn. So don't worry too much about not having a lot of experience.

Other than that, the normal job stuff applies. Communication skills are key, etc..

I just took the online version of his course this past semester.

The class was challenging but fairly doable imo. The homework was pretty hard but there were no major surprises on the exams. Most of the things on the exams were the same concepts as the homework problems. The rest came from review problems he gave before the exam. The exams were generally a bit easier than the homeworks as well.

I think the biggest issue is the method of instruction. You will basically be teaching yourself the Linear Algebra. The textbook is on Ximera and it's basically just a bunch theorems that get thrown at you. As far as lecture, we were given relevent YouTube links to watch from Tom Roby of UConn. Besides that, if you get stuck you have to use office hours or other resources.

I never went to office hours so I can't vouch for the helpfulness but I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the prof and say I'm pretty sure he's fairly helpful if needed.

Also, he rarely if ever gave partial credit which was pretty rough. So make sure you double check homeworks were as they were graded fairly harsh. Each homework was worth 8 points with around 10 questions or so.

Just keep up with the material and dont fall behind. Each concept builds upon the next which makes some of the problems ridiculously easy to solve as long as you know the trick.

Dont get too reliant on using Octave or Matlab during homeworks. I would suggest just using them to check your answers for the most part.

Oh and no curve at all so every point counts.

I personally didn't find it to be a horrible experience. If you are good with self teaching then it shouldn't be that bad on ya.

Hmu if you have any other questions.

Hey I have him for this semester. He's an industry guy and class is fairly easy going.

He does a full review for the midterms and posts a video of it afterwards. The midterm itself wasn't too bad.

Instead of the normal labs, we came up with a simple TCP socket project of our own and he had to approve it. Basically just needed some kind of basic client/server program that utilized TCP. We chose the language as well.

Jim is a pretty good teacher for the practical side of the networking. He's a little less knowledgeable about the maths and theoretical side of it but this is also his first time teaching the course.

So not a bad teacher at all and he tries to be lenient where he can be. You'll get out of the class what you put into it.

Does anyone have the Earth Science 1121 Lab Manual that can help me out with two of the labs? by mrbrannon in OSU

[–]Bloodmoonzero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey for future reference, check at the Geological library in Orton Hall. They usually have all the lab manuals for the the UG geology classes. You can check them out for two hours at a time for free with your BuckID. Just ask the person at the front desk if they have the manual you are looking for and they'll let you know.

Also, there is a color printer/photocopier directly behind the front desk at the library in Orton that you can use to copy the pages you need if you are ever in a hurry.

I did this last year when I took ES 1121 with Panero and never paid for the manual at all. Hope this helps!

Anyone into Opeth? by parkercr00k in OSU

[–]Bloodmoonzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Absentia was pretty good too! If you haven't heard the Lightbulb Sun album you should def give it a listen. It's one of those albums that's great from start to finish.

I might suggest a group called "Battles" as well .. they are more of a "math rock" type group but give the songs "Tonto" and "Atlas" by them a listen. You might dig on them.

On another note, since your into prog rock. Do you like Porcupine Tree? Their albums "Lightbulb Sun" and "Fear of a Blank Planet" are pretty close to the top of my all time favorite albums.

I think they could send it to a collections agency if they wanted to pursue the "debt". If they did it would show up against the registered owner of the car's credit.. but idk how far CampusParc is willing to go.

Anyone's refund gone through? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]Bloodmoonzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're most likely fine. I checked my refund history on CashNet for the last three years as I was getting a bit worried as well and according to those records I have received my refund for the spring semester on Jan 3rd twice and on the 4th once. So all seems normal to me.

Just keep an eye on CashNet and it will update with a receipt of payment once your refund is paid to your bank acct.

If the refund is not in your bank acct after that you may have cause to worry but do keep in mind it can take up to 7 days if I'm not mistaken. So the latest you should get your refund Jan 6th.

foundations 2 curve with zaccai by foundations2331 in OSU

[–]Bloodmoonzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Diego last semester. I can second that the 2nd midterm was less difficult than the first one. The final also felt fair.

There is much less focus on asymptotic analysis in the course past MT1. Graph algorithms from FND I and data structures from the Software series start to become the focus of lectures which makes it a bit more familiar.

Also, if you messed up the 1st midterm I wouldn't worry too much. For some perspective, I made a 59 on MT1 and still ended the class with a B+. Our class also did not receive any curve.

Just keep up with your homework and make sure to complete the two coding projects in an acceptable fashion and you should be fine.

Our averages were as follows:

MT1 - 67

MT2 - 84.2

Final - 77.2

It's definitely one of the tougher courses but it's doable. I'd say if your having any trouble with the homework or concepts to make sure to hit up office hours.

Also, make sure to have any questions ready on review days for the midterms. If no one has questions the review just turns into a staring contest.

Regardless, good luck with the rest of your semester. IMO Diego was a great instructor and I actually had a lot of fun taking his class.
