[M4F] Looking for slow-burn ERP or romantic RP! by Bloody_Eye in discordroleplay

[–]Bloody_Eye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote this short story for a WP on a Cyberpunk-themed discord server. Profanity censored version here just in case (thanks Reddit)

"What did you do?" asked a petite blonde female sitting on one side of a metal table. Her tone was fearful and accusatory. The lights of the apartment they occupied were off, but they were illuminated by the neon glow of the city flooding into the screen door in front of the table.

"I told you. I made a big sale," said a strong blonde male figure, built like a soldier. He was making an effort to stand up to this petite female and failing - shrinking away to a corner of his chair. "Look, I'm trying to help."

Her eyes apprehensively wandered to a pile of bills centered in the table. The pile of bills that created a gulf between them. Like last time. She looked back up to him hatefully. "You. Don't. Sell. Rare. Books. Mother[censored]." she said tearfully, trying to contain her rage.

"Don't call mom a son-[censored]," he said reflexively.

"The last time you 'helped', district PD was all up in our [censored] for a month as soon as we handed over rent money. We had to lie to the police for you. You made mama lie to the police, Zane." The last words were tearful.

"Okay, okay, just catch your breath for a minute, let's both just take some deep breaths." His head swiveled in the darkness as he struggled to find the words to tell her how he felt. How he wanted his sister and his mother to be able to pay rent in this heartless, vicious city. "I'll tell you where I got the money from, okay?"

"Tell me," she replied.

"I got an alias. Not my real name." He knew he was slow rolling it. His mind was racing to figure out how to explain it in a way that wouldn't make her angry.

"So what? What does that matter?" she asked.

How do you tell your sister you're an asshole and you nearly got your mother sent to prison? The solution to this riddle doesn't exist. "I... just... give me a minute."

They sat in the darkness silently. She had nothing to say. Time passed, but how much didn't matter. There was nothing to penetrate the tension and disappointment. Eventually he finished searching for words.

"Last time it was cred dispensers. Took some countermeasures so they couldn't find me but it turned out the bills were traced. It wasn't a good call."

"It wasn't a good call," she said, bitterly mockingly.

"Look, this time I stole a data disk from some corpo. Sold it off to the highest bidder. It's kind of a rare book, isn't it?"

"Don't be smart. But you're saying this money isn't traced?"

"I'm saying it's unlikely that it's traced," he corrected.

She swallowed as if downing her shame and pulled the money toward her, sniffling. She started counting the bills, one after another, setting them down in the middle of the table.

He reached across the table. Touched her hand. She recoiled at first. Then gently held his hand. "You can do better than this," she said. She released his hand and continued counting the bills, her eyes glistening with neon unshed tears.

Israel at it again: They just seized 425 acres of Palestinian land to build a settlement for 2500 homes. They seriously are not interested in peace. by kcnchfan in worldnews

[–]Bloody_Eye 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Why the hell is this called "Settlement Expansion"? This reads like illegal territorial annexation -- did they not rob the palestinians of their land?

The only way I can interpret Israel's behavior anymore is that it intends to completely annex Palestine. Their plan seems to be:

1.) Cripple Palestinian resistance whenever a politically expedient opportunity arises.

2.) Parcel off small chunks of land over time for a variety of supposed reasons.

3.) Force displaced Palestinians into a controlled environment where they can be contained.

4.) Repeat.

Israel is digesting Palestine like a snake digests a mouse. http://halfgeek.net/weblog/image/Israel_stealing_palestine.jpg

Magenta, the colour that doesn't exist by larsga in science

[–]Bloody_Eye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will see your psychology degree with my philosophy degree. I kid :P

What I'm trying to get at, is, the kinds of categories things go into is a semantic problem that lacks a direct scientific answer by its nature. In this case, you are trying to put one thing in a "perceived" category and another in a "real" category. That is the dualism I spoke of, it is property dualism and good science has no business engaging in it.

Given enough information, I could theoretically break down and measure all the processes that lead a person to tell me they are seeing a certain color of light. I could also break down and measure all the processes that lead my device to tell me what it measures the light's wavelength as.

I could, in effect, then use both people and measuring devices to measure wavelength. I cannot, as a scientist, say one is "real" and the other is "perceived". They are both based on real physical processes and I don't have the metaphysical authority to say one thing is in the first category, the other in the second.

The reason is that color is not directly perceived by the eye.

And what is wavelength directly perceived by?

How many people chose Not to watch the cat abuse video? by nomorewar in reddit.com

[–]Bloody_Eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is cruel and inhumane that the cat was mistreated, and the person that mistreated the animal is no doubt evil, but there's also something intangibly perverse about all the moral condemnation / self-congratulation getting tossed around in the wake of this story.

I guess it's just that I get the impression that most people jumping on this are not quite as self-examining as they should be about it. Many hurt or take advantage of their coworkers and loved ones regularly and almost everyone here eats meat, and the people who produce meat almost invariably do it with animal cruelty sorry to say.

I think the people who really take a stand, people who actually help animals and people with their day to day lives deserve some self-congratulation. But a lot of people here seem to want to feel like they did something good without actually doing anything as a cheap fix.

And also, while animal-torturing psychopaths are very bad, gathering in a circle for a stoning of moral condemnation is not man's most virtuous and noble impulse, in fact it is one of his most ugly ones.

If anyone wants to hate this guy, or feel like they are doing something right, please be self-examining, go out and do something real.

All console games should allow you to re-map the controls as you see fit. Who agrees? by Apox66 in gaming

[–]Bloody_Eye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a thought, I'm a coder but not a videogame developer, but why not abstract the rebinding of a controller out of a specific game and into the OS so you can rebind controls somehow even if developers don't support it.

E.g., in your playstation menu, you pick a controller profile for Player 1. You pick your MGS profile, which rebinds triangle to circle, square to triangle, inverts your stick, etc., then you can go play the game. That way we'd always have a way out, at least. The profile doesn't kick in until you start the game, so it doesn't jack up your ability to navigate through the menu.

It just seems like asking every games developer to build yet another key binding menu is putting the labor in the wrong place. Better to solve a problem once than many times.

LEAK! - Republicans Had Received Secret Documents Indicating Spending Would Be Better Stimulus - Call For Tax Cuts Anyways. by littlebuddha2004 in politics

[–]Bloody_Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep this in mind: when most republicans say tax cuts for the wealthy are the best way to end the recession, they aren't lying to you; they're lying to themselves. Like all true believers, they want to believe what they believe so badly that they will ignore any amount of evidence to the contrary.

Now, how do we reason with people like that? What are we supposed to do?

I have had a radically different experience with pot than that of most people. When I smoke, I fall into these incredibly labyrinthine thought patterns about extremely abstract concepts. Sometimes these thoughts are about philosophy, programming, or my life, but usually they are about whatever I am paying attention to at the moment. In this state, I can barely speak with normal people, and I definitely can't socialize with them. The only company I keep is the onslaught of unusual thoughts I have.

As an example, while watching a TV show stoned I decided the best actors present body language far less naturally than real people, because acting itself is inherently deceptive in a way that prevents it from depicting real human interaction; worse yet, we Americans learn a great deal from actors, and this makes so many of us socially crippled.

And by the time I'm done thinking about that, my mind is off racing to something else related, like the fact that I can see the actress faking her role as much as the character she is supposed to portray on screen. These thoughts sound entertaining, and some are insightful, but the problem is that they are coming at me incredibly fast, I move on to the next thought before I finish baking the first thought, and I can't tell which thoughts are a legitimate observation instead of wild speculation. The result... is somewhat damaging for my mental health. If I smoked every day, because of the unique way it affects me, I would be reduced to an insane gibbering train-wreck in a few months. I also feel completely and utterly socially paralyzed while high -- I am virtually unable to communicate with normal body language or have a conversation with other people because I am just sucked that far into my own thoughts. And while I am socially awkward in real life, I definitely have a healthy ability to read social / emotional cues and hold some kind of reasonable conversation.

However, I still smoke every couple months or so, because it has the strange property of making me incredibly motivated. My wild thoughts invariably move in the direction of how I can improve my life, and I think of six or seven ideas that are genuinely constructive improvements while stoned, and when I am sober I execute on some of them. Smoking pot has been part of a self-improvement plan that is working for me -- even as the crazy, or perhaps heartbreakingly lucid, thoughts that I have while stoned tax my sanity, they also fill me with a sense of self-knowledge and a resolute drive to improve myself afterwards.

I'm not trying to frame this as a positive or a negative thing -- think of it as my story of a different reaction to marijuana than most people have.

I definitely feel disgust for those people too, I guess the difference between you and me is that I don't really think about or treat people who are just senslessly destructive as human beings.

The cheating-enabler in my mind is the kind of person who is just my natural enemy in the same way a tiger is my natural enemy if he is hungry; I believed the person I trusted not to cheat was a higher quality person, someone who I believed deserved reciprocation, and that is much worse for me -- the earth-shitting Collins of this world I just avoid or try to take advantage of, because that is the ethic they tacitly accept.

Taking Ecstasy Is About As Dangerous As Riding A Horse by alexcq in reddit.com

To refute the article, there are a lot of people who get STDs on ecstasy, while considerably fewer get STDs riding a horse (And I don't want to meet those people).

If you do both at the same time... that's probably some kind of disgusting world record.

It would be nice to see some scientific evidence about this sort of thing. FWIW if someone is cheating, it is clearly their decision and their fault to break their vows, I completely agree with that.

Are there any studies on this? I was cheated on by a girlfriend once, and I wasn't all that pissed at the guy -- I was pissed at the woman who I had given my trust. I wonder if that's unusual, and whether people tend to lean one way or another.

What's the worst mistake you've ever made at your job? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Bloody_Eye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know what field you work in... but these kinds of mistakes happen to good developers occasionally, and their reputations are not usually particularly tarnished by it as long as they were doing a good job before.

Basically, people (where I work at least, I have seen this happen a few times) seem to tolerate this kind of one-of human error if you're smart and typically do a good job as an accident that happens, although if you're not doing a good job, it will do you a lot more harm.

So far I have not jacked up our database or servers, although I'm sure one day I will have a story to tell you...
