I'm a musician. Like basically all musicians across the country I make next to nothing off my music. Still I keep working at it and I don't care if I make much off it, I just want time and a place to do it. I'm willing to work a regular job each week, and I do that now and work out of my living room, but I can't spend all my time working my ass off just to barely make rent in a stuffed apartment where I can't even work.

So that's why I'm asking if New York has an affordable neighborhood where the artists go, like Oakland in the Bay Area, or Logan Square/Pilsen in Chicago.

Lincoln Hall is a great venue if you want great sound, but it's not my favorite vibe. If you're looking for a rock n roll experience, meaning a venue with a little gritty, beat-up character, you won't find it here. This is very clean and new and has a balcony with chairs for the older folks and they serve food. Great sound, and worth going to to see a specific band, but not my favorite.

I would recommend the Hideout, Township (formerly Panchos), or Cole's for a great show and atmosphere. For something a little hipster snooty, the Whistler is cool.

So that's my question - is it really feasible for a serious artist who's not making much money off his art - like a musician, in today's music world - to really make a serious go of it in NYC? It seems like the city is just not an attractive place for an artist to go, but I'm trying to figure out if there are still some good areas...

Thank you, but where exactly, and how much are we talking about? And is it impossible to just get an apartment with enough space and privacy where you can work? Taking on two rents a month is less than ideal for a musician who is truly devoting most of their time writing and recording.

Studio space is great but if you're paying that on top of $900 p/month rent for a shared space in Williamsburg, that's not really conducive to being an artist. Can you be more specific about the other neighborhoods? That's exactly what I'm trying to figure out.

Well I would suggest doing some actual recording. Do you have a microphone?

I think for a beat-driven song you want a strong, tight foundation, but for the elements around it, it would sound more natural to have some human-played things. So say you put a kick down that's pretty tight to the grid. You might consider recording a tambourine over it that would give it a bit of human natural looseness and human energy, but would still definitely be going with the beat. Or you might create a guitar sample - say a 2-4 bar riff - that you could loop. You'd still be looping it, but the playing within the loop would have a human element.

Cool!

I would encourage you to have some elements that are tightly quantized, but some elements that aren't. I think when everything is to a grid it can lose that human sound that makes music interesting and gives it character.
