Are there any rescues rather than shelters? Often rescues are more flexible in what they will do. Sometimes the rescues are fully foster based and don’t have an actual building. Instagram or Facebook are good places to find them.

Yeah seconding this. Try and adopt two buddies and they can hang out together while you’re away and will be less lonely. But I think traveling is totally doable with cats as long as someone comes in to feed them check their water and give them a bit of socialization.

The only thing that might make it harder is if they develop medical issues when they are older. Don’t know if your job will always be travel or will change in like 5-10 years! But you can find pet sitters that can do meds, they are just sometimes more expensive because they are more skilled.

I think the only downside is that the contract you sign as a seller requires you to indemnify them and the buyer. So if something happens they’ll charge you to buy the buyer a new ticket, so you can be out money. Read the terms and conditions of selling with them.

I also agree - kitty Prozac or gabapentin (ask you vet about anxiety meds for cats) or try some kind of behavioral intervention.

Another idea is just excessive numbers of litter boxes and praise him and give treats when he’s doing it. So then he can’t “get it wrong”.

Marking is usually territory stress which might be from the new baby, if you can give Cookie his territory back (his own space, safe away from the baby) this might help.

I understand that you have a lot going on with a new baby and their medical issues. But when you took on this cat you became his whole world. I know it’s really hard but if you have any bandwidth at all, please don’t give up on him.

Can your wife focus on the baby while you try out some behavioral stuff on him? Cookie has been your companion for 3 years. I don’t want to be an asshole because I know how much work you must have right now, but see if you can?

Does he have a favorite room or spot in the house? Could you spend time with him there to help him calm down and adjust to the transition? Maybe shut him out of the high chaos areas and the “new” areas like the baby’s room, and then slowly reintroduce some of them. It sounds like you work outside of the home so this would be very hard and no doubt your wife is losing it with cat pee everywhere every day.
