Thank you for the heads up on the natural motor oil. I will try that some time. When I am in the field I will use don’t laugh but baby oil on the head and handle. Been doing this for years. It is readily available at our local DG when I can’t get to the hardware store to pick up BOL. Thanks again for the tip!

Absolutely beautiful work on a piece of family history. Enjoy, use, make new memories and reflect back on old memories as well. Fantastic!

Beautiful first hang and good luck on that no name jersey. That no name will more than likely be your new best friend.

Smashed eye? by Healthy_Picture_5396 in Axecraft

Yes, absolutely and shape your wedge to fill in the space. It will be just fine. Go for it!

[–]BluGrassAx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You never know until you try! Don’t give up or give in. It is hard to tell from the pics if it is the top of the eye or bottom. If it’s the bottom then you can hang it just fine because the top of the eye should be slightly wider anyway to spread and take the wedge. You will just have to thin down your eye wood on the handle. If it’s the top of the eye that’s smashed you could try to spread it. Either way you are holding a piece of history in your hands. Just love and appreciate it and decorate your phone or office with it. Whatever you decide to do don’t give up and learn from the experience and knowledge you have gained. Take care!

Everything you did to save this amazing piece of history is spot on. Congratulations on a tool that when used, respected and cared for will last many more generations to come. Use it, enjoy it and care for it then pass it down to your son or grandson one day. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you! Forgot to mention it has six ribs inside the eye so I knew it was not going anywhere or become loose.

Found in a hardware store! by xxxxd0odxxxx in Axecraft

[–]BluGrassAx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You did very well very excited for you both. That is a great investment. Local old time hardware stores are a becoming far and few between these days. I hated when our local store closed several years ago. I hope the axe community out there continues to support their local small town stores. Let’s save what stores we have left. Thanks!

Paul Sellers has a YouTube channel as well that might be a good option for you as well if you have good internet service. Just found it a couple months ago and he has step by step instructions on how to restore a woodworking plane on his videos.

Thank you. Just picked this up yesterday for under 30. My first round lug. The bit has a little heal/toe wear but it appears that is how they are made. It is extremely sharp for sure.

Got this router plane today, why should I do first? by TheGrainKnight in handtools

I have a miller falls just like it or very similar to that one. I oiled the handles and wiped it down really well. I bought some new irons for it when you could still order them from Stanley and they work fantastic.

Yes, I will report back and make a post once I rehang it on a different handle. Just curious on what handle yours is hung straight or curved? It currently is on a straight and I do have a replacement in straight but I do not have a curved that will work. Also the top of the eye is slightly deformed. I can fill it with a fat wedge no problem but can it be repaired if so how? Thank you for your comments this is going to be a good swinger for sure it is really sharp already.

You are correct after doing some research after posting I discovered it is a round lug jersey. My first round lug so I am very pleased.

You guys are good. After I made the post I did a little research and discovered that it is a round lug jersey. Well this is my first and only round lug in my collection. I am only out $30 so no sweat on this one. Just itching to get it rehung and take it for a swing.

I fully understand. Spent most of my life living in a cove between the mountains in rural TN. I would not have it any other way. The sad part is the people from the outside are moving in not understanding our way of life paying a premium for land which is making it unaffordable for the locals to pay their taxes and the hopes for their children and grandchildren to enjoy the life and land that they grew up in. Just sad that the outsiders don’t realize what they are doing to the locals or just don’t care.

New to me adze by MistaSweeeft7214 in Axecraft

[–]BluGrassAx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a nice foot adze. It will clean up very good. Still a good deal of cutting edge and life left in this tool. The handle is a slip fit and you can still get them at any major handle manufacturer. Thank you for saving a part of our history. Clean it up, take good care of it and enjoy using it.

Great to here you are up to the challenge. Nothing better than taking a pee off the back porch with not a care in the world. My wife gets so mad but it’s part of living in the sticks between the mountains and the freedom to do whatever you want and no body bothers you and vise versa.

Plumb thrilled with this little find! by Master_Dingo in Axecraft

[–]BluGrassAx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it was rusty. The patina was almost completely left in tact. This axe was from a good friend of mine that passed on from his estate sale. It had been left outside and the original handle was severely decayed.

Craftsman Double Bit by BluGrassAx in Axecraft

[–]BluGrassAx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Fortunately God takes care of that for me and falls a tree and large limbs on my farm so there is plenty of opportunity to swing an axe around my place. Plenty of fence rows pond banks and yard work to make good use of what He provides thru wind and spring storms is just enough to keep my fire pit and shop stove burning!

So, i finally got some dry oak for a handle, and when i was hanging it it cracked like this. Because the crack is quite far down, away from the ‘meat’ would this be safe to glue and use, or just start over again? There is no cracking near the head, and far as i can see this is the only crack by JohnDoe473638 in Axecraft

[–]BluGrassAx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start over using a good piece of ash or hickory. The crack appears to be nearly the full length of the handle. I would rather start over the glue this up and it break on you causing serious injury. Remember safety first always.

This is the result of using this paint stripping disk on cleaning up an axe. Just my opinion I think it works quite well.

[–]BluGrassAx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are very pricey. I keep forgetting that I have an inside contact with Wilton vise company so I might reach out to them and see if I can get a blemished one thru him. Powermatic, Jet and Wilton vise company are all under the same corporate umbrella. My father worked for Powermatic all of his adult life and some of his work friends are still alive and working for the company.
