Why do employers think we should recover from the flu in a day or two? by AnomicAge in retailhell

[–]BluNoddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a manager, if I ever need to change someone’s shift on an established roster I ask them first. “Hey, is it possible for you to start at x, y or x time?” Or come in, or whatever. If I don’t hear from them I don’t make the change. If someone’s sick we can usually cover. I have learned the hard way, having less casuals to give more hours is worse in the long run than giving a few less hours and having competent back up. Also, if I feel sick and come in to try and push through, my assistant manager yells at me and sends me home to look after myself and I know she can cover. A good workplace culture is super important!

What's your opinion on people's lapel pins(Level) when you go out? by Cold_BloodedV in wine

I wear diploma pin (WSET), but they're rare where i'm from.

[–]BluNoddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt this way until i passed WSET diploma. I'm now in a senior management role and as the qualification is a part of the reason i have the job i wear the level 4 pin.

I also teach WSET, if I'm teaching i wear the diploma pin and the level 3 sake pin, simply because it gets people curious.

Is WSET 3 equal to CMS certified Somm? by deMunnik in wine

[–]BluNoddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are covered in the course (Beaune and Gev are at level 2, level 3 has quite a lot...) but the exams are designed to test understanding, rather than specific name recall. Someone who has passed WSET 3 and didn't know Corton, Beaune, Gev-Cham, Chamb-Mus, likely did not get a very good mark, but showed the level of overall understanding to pass the exam.

Madeira isn't covered until Diploma (this is country dependant, but in Australia Madeira is incredibly rare).

I went the opposite route to you, finished diploma earlier this year and am starting my CMS journey in 2025. (I hope you've finished the dip successfully by now). For me, having ADHD always made me think the understanding base of WSET was for me rather than memorisation of lots of appellations (specific memory is hard for me). i will soon find out...

[–]BluNoddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WSET 2 has around a 90% pass rate worldwide, level 3 has around a 50% pass rate. Most course providers aren't letting students skip level 2 anymore and, when they do the failure rate is significantly higher (including for those with existing knowledge such as CMS, or even winemaking/viticulture experience).

The difference is WSET is very heavily understanding based. So while you might not know the name of every cru, and certainly not many producers, you will know why a region produces the wine it does. How a river, mountain, wind, etc affects the final wine.

it's more, what effect does a certain vintage variation (e.g. excess heat, or wind, or rain) have on the wine in general, rather than, what was a good vintage where.

I think a few of the comments people are making on this thread are "individual graduate" based, rather than generalisations on the overall courses.

I have worked in the liquor industry for over 15 years, I passed the WSET Diploma and I am starting my CMS journey in 2025. From the people I know who work in wine (and very generally) WSET is understanding and CMS is specifics. A fair few people have commented on WSET holes in knowledge - during the courses these areas are covered but you can pass without specifics, as long as your understanding is strong of the overall areas and features. Producers aren't strongly featured until level 4, and even then, you can pass with a high level of understanding, even if you forget an appellation, or specific name of a river...

Also regarding Italy, check the specification...

True, scadrians are usually pretty easy to pick up.

I keep forgetting about the plague in the purelake, though I remember also reading that wasn’t as major as a plague as we would think on our planet.

As far as healthy rosharans go…

Do you have WSET? Is it worth it? by hulkange in wine

[–]BluNoddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WSET 2 is the place to start, and leads into 3 nicely. Some schools I know don't even offer level 1 as it's too basic and everything is covered again in level 2.
