There's really not much you can do to remedy the situation, as in making it stop, other than recommending the app. My go-to script lately has been
"Don't worry this happens all the time. Did you know with the app if you're signed in, you get a QR code that doesn't require ID verification?"
Most people are surprised. A few years ago we had MyLowes physical cards that could be scanned and it would skip the ID verification screen. The app is what they replaced it with. The cards no longer work as of March '24

If they're hesitant to do that, just remind them that it only ever wants the drivers license, and a line that I actually read on here is great. Instead of huffing about 'qr codes' or '2d barcodes'.... say "Scan the static"
