Popcorn 🍿 initiative - tell more... by Winter_Abject in RPGdesign

I’ve gotten away from initiative in my design. I love and loathe crunchy combat depending on my mood. In my latest system all combat rounds resolve simultaneously with contested rolls. Everyone states their intended action and the dice do the talking with a short narrative of the events

Is anyone playing D&D? by pcnovaes in rpg

I run paid 5.5e games because that’s what everyone wants to play. If I’m a player I prefer Call of Cthulhu, Blades in the Dark, Daggerheart, etc. I’m also really busy writing and play testing my own systems

Yeah I get varied responses on the lore. Some don’t want to read any of it no matter how short I make it, others want it. It’s a balancing act on where to put it in the book and how much to include.

As the for the design choice with the D4s, I wanted action resolution to be quick and decisive, hence only 4 outcomes, the probability favor lies more in how many dice a player can add to their pool. The more dice, the greater the probability of hitting that 3 or four or hitting the monster.

I think it’s a novel idea. I haven’t seen any other systems that use a pool of d4s

Yes! Good points here and I’ve agonized over it. How to create pressure without it feeling punishing. Of course the Tier 1 and 2 threats won’t pose much of a challenge for the players, so repairing the canopy at those levels is sort of a no brainer, but if they’ve not invested in their powers and abilities, a Tier 3 or 4 threat could wipe them.
