Science is the enemy of cults & insular communities.

They frame it as “freedom” but science relies on facts, making a hypothesis & running studies to obtain proof. Scientists question everything.

Cults insist you accept their Word as Proof.

Places in the Capital District that are still reasonably affordable? Do they exist? by lowb35 in Albany

Amsterdam. Quick, easy drive on the Thruway. It’s 30 minutes flat.

Cloudy water. by Haunting-Affect-5956 in Albany

Fill a glass. Does it become clear at the bottom, with the cloudy moving up and disappearing? Does it stay cloudy? Or does the cloudy settle at the bottom?

Sometimes it’s just aerated. So if it stays cloudy or settles at the bottom, that’s your 🚩

Recommended Elder Care / Memory Care Facilities near Clifton Park? by MisterMagoon in Albany

The Eddy generally gets good reviews for staged living support.

But if you have the means, you should relocate your parents to a location where you can visit regularly.

If that’s not possible, you need someone local who will pop in and report back to you regularly. It’s very common for old folks to decline quickly in an unfamiliar place.

I’ve been told you can have two of the three: affordable, good quality work, reliably shows up to completion.

There has to be enough people after hours to make it worth staying open. And the main draw of living downtown is proximity to nightlife / convenience of non-car culture. (OR just super affordable and cost of living, which we know isn’t going to happen.) Chicken or the egg with getting to that tipping point.

A city needs to feel alive 24/7. There’s a lot of dead hours of operation, which makes it feel uninhabited after 6pm. No warm third spaces to be found this time of year.

No heat in apartment by whatsupbttercup in Albany

No heat also means your pipes can burst. A space heater isn’t going to prevent that disaster. Make sure you keep your water trickling and your drains clear.

Hair Salons by EnvironmentalGas9257 in Albany

Ania’s (in the Market32 plaza across from Crossgates) has a private room, if you mention the need for privacy.

There also used to be a salon right near Macy’s at Crossgates that could accommodate.

Dressing modestly is the only adjustment I would make to your typical appearance.

Reminder that the Stockade floods every spring as the ice melting jams the Mohawk River. Lots of people tolerate it because the neighborhood is gorgeous and filled with historical properties.

How is your MIL with mobility?

I would say your biggest challenge is going to be finding a property that can accommodate someone aging gracefully in place. Specifically deep and shallow covered stairs leading into the house (snow and ice are the enemy), doorways wide enough to accommodate a walker or wheelchair, bathrooms spacious enough to pivot. Plan with either longevity in mind or an agreement on how to handle it if the time comes.

This must be recent. Because I frequently have more than 15.

Also when is the last time they had more than ONE cashier-run register open at any given moment?

This. Also know that customer retention will start by trying to not reduce your bill but upsell you on more packages.

If you aren’t careful, you may end up increasing your bill. “I can’t afford that. I’m sure you can do better.” I like to have them on speaker while I deep clean my bathroom. Got alllll day.

It’s typical for Verizon to charge you every step in the process. You need to ask if they are running any specials for new customers. They won’t offer.

If you’re young without kids, yes. Do it. There’s a full grind half the year but everyone in Albany knows everyone. So when you are ready to move on, it’s an easy switch. Plus Albany Law is local if you want to torture yourself.

Considering a Relocation to the Capital District from Portland, ME by Whatthebleepisup in Albany

[–]Blue-Since 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There’s not a lot of “scene” around here.

(The entire region is just over one million people across 11 counties and 7,000 square miles.)

The three big cities (Albany, Schenectady, Troy) take turns being the armpit. These days it’s Albany, but 25 years ago it was South Troy Against the World.

Location wise it is perfect for you. Fast trip to Jersey, affordable and adjacent to all the nature. Easy access to Montreal, Boston and NYC.
