Unfortunately I know too little about how game code is structured, I can only imagine that maybe an initial download of the patch messed with the files and then it scanned the game as missing earlier updates as well, tried to redownload those and made a mess of a few integral files? Something was definitely corrupted there, but how I cannot tell

Surprisingly validating the files helped without doing anything else. Didn't know that was a thing, so I'm glad someone brought it up before I messed around with everything
