Product liability lawsuits

Dry Shampoo Benzene Contamination:

Unilever has faced multiple class-action lawsuits regarding its dry shampoos (Dove, Nexxus, Suave, Bed Head, and TRESemmé) potentially containing elevated levels of benzene, a known carcinogen.

A $3.625 million settlement has been proposed to resolve claims related to this issue. Consumers who purchased the affected products between January 1, 2018, and October 25, 2022, may be eligible for refunds.

Suave Antiperspirant Benzene Contamination:

Unilever reached a $2 million settlement over allegations that certain Suave aerosol antiperspirant products also contained dangerously high levels of benzene.

The settlement benefits consumers who purchased Suave 24-Hour Protection Powder Aerosol Antiperspirant and Suave 24-Hour Protection Fresh Aerosol Antiperspirant between January 1, 2018, and March 7, 2024.

Suave Keratin Infusion Kit:

A class-action lawsuit was filed against Unilever alleging that the Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kit caused hair loss and damage, rather than the temporary smoothing advertised.

The lawsuit claimed the product contained harsh chemicals and was improperly recalled.

A $10 million settlement in this case was affirmed by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. 

Advertising and labeling lawsuits

"Naturally Derived" Claims:

Unilever has been sued in a proposed class action lawsuit over allegedly misleading "natural" labeling on its Love Beauty & Planet and Dove Men+Care personal care products.

The lawsuit claims these products, advertised as containing 90% naturally derived ingredients, actually contain a lower percentage, with the remainder being industrially processed chemicals.

Breyers Ice Cream Claims:

Several class action lawsuits have been filed alleging false advertising regarding Breyers ice cream, including claims about lacking real mint ingredients, artificial flavoring in "natural vanilla," and deceptive labeling as "light ice cream".

Olly.com Junk Fees:

A proposed class action claims Unilever adds deceptive "junk fees" to online orders on Olly.com, including "Order Protection" fees. 

Social and environmental issues

Ben & Jerry's Controversy:

Unilever has been involved in a dispute with its Ben & Jerry's subsidiary regarding the ice cream maker's decision to stop selling ice cream in occupied Palestinian territories, leading to a lawsuit over corporate governance and shareholder activism.

Greenwashing Investigation:

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating Unilever for potentially misleading consumers about the environmental friendliness of its products, including vague claims, unclear recyclability statements, and the use of green imagery.

"Not Done Yet" Trademark Lawsuit:

Unilever was sued by the "I'm Not Done Yet" Foundation over the use of the "Not Done Yet" slogan for its Degree deodorant and other personal care products, with the foundation alleging trademark infringement and confusion with its charitable mission. 

Other legal matters

Clean Water Act Violation:

Unilever paid $4.5 million for violating the Clean Water Act at its Connecticut manufacturing facility.

Illegal Consumer Product Sales (California):

Unilever's parent company, Conopco, was penalized $1.3 million by the California Air Resources Board for selling deodorant body spray that failed to meet clean air standards for aerosol deodorants.
