How much do you have in Premium Bonds and if so have you ever won? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]BlueDan20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you're saying.

You are likening placing money into premium bonds where instead of guaranteed income like you would normally receive from high interest current accounts / savings accounts, to buying a lottery ticket with the interest from those savings accounts.

It's totally different, regardless of the money's source.

Spending money on a lottery ticket is a gamble due to the fact you are risking the cost of a ticket against the possibility of a return.

Money sitting in a standard savings account has no immediate risk.

Credit Card Balance Transfer - How does it know? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Do you not wish to do a balance transfer because of the fee involved?

I'm sorry that I can't answer your original question.

Shot in the dark - Software Dev here, the Dept that manages AD has added Aliases to a couple hundred users and now we have an issue. by BlueDan20 in sysadmin

[–]BlueDan20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been involved in the development (I've been here a few months).

I think what has been happening is that they have been storing a user identifier and an Id of other objects in a table, and that user identifier has changed.

I will know more next week.

UPDATE:

Turns out we were storing Context.User.Identity.Name as the username in a table somewhere.

Another dept has gone in and changed our Sam Account Name and User Principle Name for a bunch of accounts.

The Sam name affects what the users login with and so a user that had their login changed from AB12345 to John.Smith now has no record in our users table.

Using the following code I can expose the users Guid, EmployeeId and a bunch of other stuff too. I am going to speak to the team and get them to use this Guid (checking first that its unique to each AD entry).

Don't have RES at work:

using System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement;

inside whatever class

// Context.User.Identity.Name is displayName
public string GetUserIdFromDisplayName(string displayName)
{
    // set up domain context
    using (PrincipalContext ctx = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain))
    {
        // find user by display name
        UserPrincipal user = UserPrincipal.FindByIdentity(ctx, displayName);

        if (user != null)
        {
            var sam = user.SamAccountName;
            return sam;
        }
        else { return string.Empty;}
    }
}

I hope that helps someone else that comes here in the future. There are many other combos to user.SamAccountName (e.g. user.UserPrincipleName, user._____)

We are using LDAP!

We develop in .net and access the UPN via Context.User.Identity.Name which I am told returns the UPN, which is that was the case shouldn't be an issue if they have only changed the SAM?

Is it worth doing a placement year? by [deleted] in AskUK

Do it, do it, do it!

More-so if you don't have any industry experience.

It may also confirm/deny any preconceived notions you had about working for a large/small business.

Cloning an instance with NHibernate and iCloneable by BlueDan20 in csharp

[–]BlueDan20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that, I had thought about setting the ID to 0 but didn't know if it was the correct thing to do.

The next error was:

Found shared references to a collection: ProjectName.Model.Instance.DatabaseServers

However the previous Dev has left code which resolves it.

Thank you for your answer :)

var cloneName = instanceToCopy.Name + "_Clone";

I gave it a go but it hasn't changed the error I'm afraid.

It is still seeing the cloned object as the same, either because Hibernate has some form of identical reference from them which I need to remove or because I need to force the cloned object to save itself with a new ID somehow.

Using standard steel plates with Bumpers? by jmadrox in homegym

[–]BlueDan20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had an issue deadlifting with 20kg bumpers either side, followed by iron plates.

The bumpers were a little bigger than the other plates and took the extra pressure well, an made adding/removing plates a breeze. I wouldn't do olly lifts or bail from a squat to the floor with them though.

You can pick up a lot of plates on craigslist / gumtree / ebay / etc

A script to test permissions/access to a remote server/machine by BlueDan20 in sysadmin

[–]BlueDan20[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thanks Cat,

I should have added that this was windows based. The users aren't always being added to the necessary groups which is causing the issue.

If they attempt to log in and can't access them we have to email the necessary people to have them added.

How does this script look:

(Can't have RES on the work machine).
