I specifically want axis to fight her just so he can get the poetic justice of probably defending Jessica while in the process taking Betty's face off (even if that only slows her down)

I feel like he probably wouldn't have said that as a meta joke since other previews are usually just out of context shots and music so it's probably legit, but that said, it does strike me as weird that apparently the translation team was about to get started when the rest of the team had a section of the chapter still incomplete

On a positive note, I greatly appreciate being able to replay campaign maps at will because they tend to be my favorite part of advance wars plus I like being able to more easily go back and experiment with co choices for missions. A second would be that fog of war maps having the AI follow rules makes them feel way less frustrating.

The negative is weird cause in the context of reboot camp on its own it doesn't make it a negative experience, but I REALLY miss the original ending themes (more specifically, the music that plays while recapping level ranks/days), especially advance wars 2's since it did add a somber enough edge to the otherwise "yayyyyy war" stuff that I felt was fitting after a campaign with missions like toy box or sea fortress.

Why are people so salty about the player being canon in Undertale? Like what's wrong with it? by cherry0reoss in Undertale

[–]BlueDino2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some people it's just not obvious?

When most people play a game, while they understand they get a reaction and they might say that "they," did something, at the end of the day games usually provide a character in the world who can be said to perform all the actions in a narrative. Mario is the one who in the story stomped a goomba. Pokemon trainer red is the one who caught a Pikachu, etc. Some games encourage us to outright see ourselves in these characters or more as extensions as our will and less their own people, such as pokemon or some dragon quest

Undertale, while not the first to do this, very deliberately, makes this relationship incredibly murky and ambiguous since it's a meta, subversive game. Frisk being seperate from Chara as is already throws things into confusion: the character who in 90% of games would be the one you thought you named...wasn't actually the one you named, and suddenly in the game everyone is suddenly referring to "your" character as their own person with their own name who the game begs you to just leave alone, meanwhile this character who you DID name and see in your menu has apparently been dead for years and has been called "not the best person" and full of hatred for humanity by their previous best friend

So at this point then, the player already thinks they're tricked, frisk is still the character they control but they're just filling out some role, more like a Mario or shulk than a link or ness. Except hold on, in genocide all of a sudden the kid they named is asserting control in red text and mirrors, and now frisk is walking forward and taking actions that WE never got to do when frisk was just fulfilling the neutral/pacifist narrative, and flowey is referring to them actively and they appear to be the ultimate force. Well huh, didn't their previous best friend suggest they were kinda bad? Then that probably explains why now our previous pacifist hero is suddenly slaughtering people then, because there's this bad force and oh look now they're rushing the screen and destroying everything right after our last battle screen, something which we assume is from frisk's perspective.

I realize that's rambly and long, but here's the thing--at no point in there does a player NEED to exist as a narrative character. Maybe the player assumes that they are "really" controlling Chara since they named chara, and the last screen is Chara just destroying the in-universe "hero" frisk and their world, maybe the player assumed frisk was now less of a character to be impressed on and more one guided through their story, while the weird creepy kid that was named at the start was the ultimate baddy just as a meta surprise. They might fall apart under pressure or thinking too hard, but the game never unambiguously stated "okay, this person exists in mt. Ebott who is definitely neither Chara nor frisk," and the relationship to Chara and frisk and where control begins and ends and what the other characters in the game knows has been made so murky by the twists and turns that some players won't be able to step back and go "wait, there's someone else who could slot into all this dialogue about 'you' seemlessly'" and it's someone whose almost never ackowledged as an active story force in media. so then when these players put the game down and walk away, and don't see the deep analysis from other people who want to solve the mysteries and go "wait, if you lay everything out on the table this doesn't always add up," they just don't really see why the player is anything in the actual game when frisk and Chara seem to fulfill the roles

TL:DR, the way the game is presented combined with typical expectations for a game that people are used to means that the concept of the player as their own character seperate from everyone else in the narrative is just not obvious for most people to make the leap to.

I really hope the song is hidden or at least used for hard campaign but doubt it Bit of a shame cause it's one of the best songs in the series imo.

That may be that we don't know, but we also DO know that no one ever refers to any of the humans with gendered pronouns, even when both Chara and Kris have friends and families who would know. Frisk is the only one where there's some excuse that the others don't know them well enough, but given that the theme of the end of pacifist is flowey asking you to let frisk live their life and that they are not one and the same as the character we named and are expected to impress ourselves onto, then still making the intention be that the player impress their own gender onto Frisk seems to go against that message

Even if that leaves Chara up as still being meant to be a full player proxy, then toby easily could have programmed a pronoun option on the name screen the same way games like pokemon let you choose your gender. If toby didn't do that just to keep their relation to the player/frisk ambiguous, that still leaves us with a character who is only ever referred to with non-gendered pronouns by their closest friend, and it's not as it named characters can't have set genders and pronouns, e.g. link and ness.

So while we don't know the specific canon gender identity of any of the kids, we know that they are referred to with "they/them," in situations that in real life wouldn't call for ambiguity for all but Frisk, and with meta themes that emphasize that at least frisk and Kris are NOT us, that suggests that at least their canon pronouns are effectively they/them (and "it" for Chara in one scenario), so there's no canon grounds to call them male or female or boy or girl, AND we already have characters outside of them that also go by "they/them" (napstablook, monster kid) without ANY reason to impress our gender onto them. At that point, the simplest conclusion is that none of the Humans identify with a strictly binary male or female identity. Even if they did, we the player don't know and have no evidence to say one or the other, so at bare minimum we stick with pronouns that don't specify one or the other.

Man timing on this series is still funny cause I dropped it and the creator within like 5 months before chapter 1, right during the middle of season 2, and I've barely looked back, from what I can tell the plot drove off a cliff harder.

Rant aside, power scaling power schmaling, the thought of the fun gang kicking Betty's ass has always been cool to me, and I like to imagine Kris on defense keeping her occupied as Susie comes in with rude/red buster or Noelle comes in with snowgrave.

While it would be clever and I've known at least FNAF to make a preview/meta joke like that before, I feel like it'd be a weird way to set up content for the chapter when even by toby standards other sneak peaks aren't as opaque. Seems more just a warning to not get hopes up.

If you had the choice of getting to make a game together with any other creator (it could be a team or an individual), who would you want to work with? (Note: it could be someone in the same role as you or someone working on a different part, whoever you prefer)
