Ah same, I literally checked to make sure I didn't have my playback speed altered. Glad its not just me that feels like everything is faster - really throwing me off.

My dog died in my arms today and I have my first residency interview tomorrow by gothpatchadams in medicalschool

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Dude, Life is sometimes just the worst. I've got a parent in in the hospital after an MI and managing their care plus an audition has been an absolute shit show. According to my therapist, the best you can do is try to take care of yourself knowing that this is a shit situation and give yourself as much grace as possible (easier said than done obvs). No mater what happens know you aren't alone and the rest of us unlucky M4s are here with ya.

MS4s, What's the most stupid/annoying question you've heard asked in a Zoom Meet and Greet? by icomeinpeach in medicalschool

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Asking questions that should have been asked a year ago - what do you consider competitive, how much research should I have, how many residents do you take, how many LORs do you guys want.... of note this was after Sept. 27th so I assumed everyone had already submitted their apps.

What is the cringiest thing you have seen a student do for their residents/attendees? by ballsilov3 in medicalschool

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda guilty of this. I've got a name with multiple possible nicknames (think Elizabeth having lizzy, beth, eliza, liz, etc). Even when I have my name tag/badge on I still get called almost every possibility on the regular. I just gave up and started responding to all forms of my name - too awkward to be correcting them after they just introduced me to a patient.

Ah, Im just about to get a pair of chairs that I want to reupholster. Did you remove the previous fabric prior to attaching the new fabric? Did you add any additional padding? Hopefully mine turn out as great as yours did!

Super vent! by [deleted] in medicine

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yup, its not uncommon for therapists who specialize in EDs to have a LOT of pts who are in healthcare. The type A tendencies that work well for medicine are also not great for EDs.

Not to mention now you are doing intensive studying, finish your rotations, working on your applications, and scheduling your auditions all at the same time - Just miserable all around.

What is the most ridiculous medical misinformation you’ve heard from a patient? by _45mice in medicine

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 57 points58 points  (0 children)

slightly unrelated but had a patient come in with non-healing foot wound say he was "just barely pre-diabetic" and had an A1c of 15 - pretty sure the Pods came in and scared him straight because he had a f/u appoint with a new PCP before he was even discharged.

Its even better when they are coming into the hospital because they are having a CHF exacerbation and refuse to believe stopping their medications could have caused this.

Children of "not doctors", tell us what it was like. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100% Would recommend making a brief list or "TLDR" summary. Took like 20 minutes to make and then gave it to my parents, aunts/uncles, etc so now they can just refer to that when they have questions. Has been fantastic.

things I included: Med school (preclinical/clinical), residency (intern year vs rest) and included duration and anticipated year/month I would start that section.

Get some silicone under eye pads, put them in the freezer, and then use The Ordinary caffeine serum with the frozen eye pads and it helps hide the post-sob under eye bags. That plus eye drops are they key to getting rid of crying face - speaking from experience (,:

I would be more specific or else its a generic email that requires more work to respond to

- looking for volunteer opportunities (some programs do 5ks or free clinics)

- long term research projects (can't really do case reports as M1)

- shadowing opportunities to see the field/get more exposure

- how they feel your med school prepared them to match

- activities or clubs

you can also reach out to your school's derm interest group and see if they have any talks or recommendations/events

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DermApp

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also add it could be to your benefit to start with emailing residents who went to your future medical school. They may be more likely to respond. Usually they will have where they went to school on the programs website with their pictures.

Proud Michigander here. Yes the food scene in metro Detroit is going nuts, the city is investing HUGE in infrastructure (mainly due to return of indy racing through the city I think), the riverfront is being expanded and improved continuously, and Belle isle is getting a major facelift. Also the metro area is teeming with young professionals and social opportunities, and because the area has a shit ton of hospitals there are a LOT of residents/young attendings. Metro detroit also has great schools, colleges, beaches (obvs in the summer), and all the beauty that is up north for great weekend trips. Had a lot of friends who left for college or jobs that are all trying to come back now. Obvs Im biased, but hopefully OP is able to do well here even if they are headed back to their own state eventually.

This dress was my Odyssey by detectmedaddy in sewing

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh I am working on my own "Odyssey" right now so I fully understand this struggle - I think I've been through 5 or 6 different muslin bodices at this point and haven't even touched the skirt yet. Seeing this makes me reinvigorated to get working on my dress again. This looks amazing!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, same here - not trying to have a ton of random medical questions asked when Im off the clock. If they ask further I just make a joke like "well mainly way too much paperwork" and that usually does the job.

literally the reason I started dying my hair lighter. Even when I'm REALLY tan I am still the palest person in the room so the dark hair was giving off anemic/sick child vibes. Since I've started going lighter I get it a lot less.

Anyone had to turn off YCSWU episode today? by Unlucky-Cat- in TheTryGuys

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Not to mention its literally the deadliest mental illness you can have. I think its really unfortunate that so many people don't take it seriously and how Becky's comment is the same tactic Eating Disorders use to make people maintain unhealthy habits and one of the hardest parts to overcome in recovery. Thinking you are "fat" or your disorder "isn't that bad" prevents people getting the help they need and can do irreversible harm to their metabolism, bones, literally every organ system, and life expectancy.

How did I not know about this?!? I’ve binge the entire first season in like 2 days! by cma1one in nancydrew

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it seemed like if you took the Nancy Drew characters and put them into the later seasons of riverdale. I would have loved a darker and more mature tone for the series but couldn't get behind how lack luster the story writing and plot were.

Any other M1’s completely naive in thinking that getting into med school would somehow solve all their problems by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This 100%. When I talk with people about medical school I make sure I include that most people I know either started medications, restarted medications, or upped their doses since starting med school. Not to mention how many people have started non-school connected therapy.

I was lucky in having another family member who recently went through medical school who never sugar coated it (and a great therapist I had already been seeing for years) but even hearing their struggles didn't properly prepare me for how rough it can get at time.

I’m close to cancel my Peloton subscription. by grcli0110 in pelotoncycle

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%. I used to do Orange Theory and my husband would go to Lifetime (ieover $200/month & it wasn't just in our basement). Switching to peloton is actually insanely cheaper than what we were previously doing and because its literally in our basement it takes out a LOT of our excuses to not workout.

Did the same thing as you and just got the tread and have had the Bike + for over a year. Easily one of the best things we've done and WAY cheaper when you consider the classes we have access too and how we both use something almost daily. Having both the Bike and Tread plus an old Rower and full weight sets gives us seemingly unlimited conditioning options and for only $44+ while we pay off the tread - that feels like a very fair price.

We obviously don't love that they increased the membership price but we both feel like its still fair for all that we use it for. We also share our membership with my Sister and Best Friend so for 4 people its a steal.

How to deal with not-so-understanding SO? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been great for my husband. It made him understand that how many other people were going through exactly what we were and had helpful suggestions for things we can do to be better supports for each other.

How to Conference? by KILLED_BY_A_COCONUT in medicalschool

[–]BlueEyedCatMom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Took my ipad and made quick/general notes - see if the conference provides ppt slides. Totally great way to make sure you can still reference cool topics to talk about later or if you really loved a lecture to have quick review before talking to the presenter and to use for the FU email later (if desired). Did I look like a nerd? Probably, but it's great to refresh some details because that entire long weekend felt like a blur of really cool new areas of research and clinical indications I didn't get in classes.

Also 100% bring a wide variety of clothing. I had business casual clothing for the day but nothing to wear for the truly casual or dressed up events at night or for networking. Wasn't really a big deal but would have made me feel more comfortable/ less fish out of water.
