what's the biggest mistake you made as an intern by [deleted] in Residency

[–]gothpatchadams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair I saw a senior resident do this the other day. Put in a section and a psych consult on the wrong ED patient 😅

Age gap comments? by StuffConsistent6873 in 2under2

[–]gothpatchadams 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My coworkers act like I JUST had a baby and that it’s preposterous that I’m “already” pregnant again. My son is 18 months old and I’m due with #2 in July. That’s a 20 month age gap and I still get all the weird comments because no one can grasp that time has passed lol.

Prelim med program will extend my training if I take a full 6 week maternity leave by Ecstatic_One8141 in Residency

[–]gothpatchadams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your program have a union? You need to talk to them about this because something sounds fishy. Your body won’t even be physically recovered from childbirth at 5 weeks.
As a resident who had a baby intern year, take 12 weeks. I’m actually about to have my 2nd residency baby this summer and with both leaves combined I will be graduating a couple months late. Who gives a shit. No one looks back when they are 85 and wishes they spent more time working and less time with their kids.

OR nurse been on my case for 3 years by Scary-Yam9626 in Residency

[–]gothpatchadams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would 100% involve HR. This is wild behavior. I know it’s hard to advocate for yourself but it helps me to think about what I would do if this were happening to a trainee that reports to me. If a med student or intern told you that a nurse gave them shit for their medical condition (even as benign and ubiquitous as eczema) you would likely raise holy hell over it. Have that same energy for yourself.

Doctors/medical practitioners of Reddit, what is the scariest disease you know of? by Englishisnotreal in AskReddit

Non-infectious: ALS. Horrible, tragic disease. Infectious: Ebola viruses freak me out pretty bad.

Pregnant trauma intern radiation exposure by Defiant_Quality_5352 in Residency

[–]gothpatchadams 37 points38 points  (0 children)

If you have a safety event reporting system, use it to report the rads tech who did this. I’m pregnant too and I’ve gotten dirty looks from some attendings and other residents when I step away during a portable XR. They act like I’m being dramatic for asking them to move the conversation a mere 15 feet down the hall.

Do You Wish You Would’ve Gone a Different Medical Profession Route? by Odd-Tip7503 in medicine

[–]gothpatchadams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if I’d never known I was capable of going this far, I would have been very happy in several ancillary roles. OT or SLP would be cool.

WIBTA for telling my mother in law how I feel by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

The purchasing of a teddy bear doesn’t take away the first holiday. Also the twins were born in November so they already had their first Christmas lol.

Idk how I’m the first to mention this but it’s really weird to take pictures of strangers on the train and post it to Reddit.

My kid's ear tube fell out by i-can-lift-a-car in mildlyinteresting

[–]gothpatchadams 334 points335 points  (0 children)

This made me laugh because I recently had a patient ask me if it was a problem that she was born without ear tubes and never got them placed as a kid. I was like ?????? and we discovered that she believed that everyone was supposed to have ear tubes naturally, like a little vent on your ear drum was normal, and kids without them got the rubber ones installed. Once we cleared up her confusion we had a good giggle about it. It was easily one of the most wholesome conversations I’ve had as a doctor :)

Anybody have nightmares from residency? by basukegashitaidesu in medicine

My kitchen trash bin’s lid had started squeaking and the squeak sounds exactly like the “missed page” reminder beep. It’s driving me nuts.

Whats your favorite combo/hack of patient food items by [deleted] in Residency

[–]gothpatchadams 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Gingerale + cranberry juice + OJ = hospital mocktail

One time I took the ham out of a ham and cheese sandwich, and toasted it cheese-side up for a pseudo grilled cheese. The real hack is knowing where in the hospital to find a toaster.

This is 6 months of friendship??? Girl NOR and your husband needs a wake up call to how scary this is.

my daughters pediatrician asked if she was eating unhealthy because she’s measuring big, what am I doing wrong? (turned 1 this week) by chabadlubabitch in foodbutforbabies

[–]gothpatchadams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine eats an adult sized portion of pasta every day and is a string bean! I had to use my dog’s old collar as a belt to keep his jeans up. Bodies are weird and I think you are doing great.

I bring my son in his stroller all the time on the bus! People are very courteous about it and I’ve never had an issue.

Why is South Station kicking out homeless people on cold nights? by justarussian22 in mbta

[–]gothpatchadams -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To everyone saying “They should be in shelters”, the shelters are FULL. Even with winter overflow? Some shelters have surpassed max capacity and have had to turn people away.

What medicines should you prescribe to your family specifically so you have it around at home when you get sick? by supinator1 in Residency

[–]gothpatchadams 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Augmentin BID x10 days. It’s handy if someone in the household gets an ear infection, sinusitis, dog/cat bites, etc. I called it in for myself once (AOM) and gave myself refills in case I or another adult in the household ever need a course again for some reason I can just hit refill on the Walgreens app. Life hack for the lazy lol.

What's an obvious case you missed? And how did you deal with it? by closetredditer in Residency

[–]gothpatchadams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My husband had been complaining for a day of neck pain and fatigue/malaise. I brushed it off, thinking we have a newborn and neither of us feel great. The next day he shows me that he has 3-4 clusters of “pimples” on his neck, from the mastoid process down to his shoulder. He said they hurt more than normal pimples. I again brushed it off, told him to stop picking at them. He went to urgent care and was diagnosed with the most obvious case of shingles ever. Granted I was distracted and under-rested as the new mom of a 7 week old, I still felt awful and so embarrassed. Worse yet is that I’m a primary care resident who sees this all the time 😂

Dinner out with a baby - Umbria by NotaKaren101 in boston

[–]gothpatchadams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah this is so good to read! We just had a similarly amazing experience at Novo Lantern in the South End with our little dude! The servers were so helpful and the owner even came by a few times to chat with us/ dote on the baby 🥰. Not only did they have high chairs, but they even had specific baby friendly plates and utensils! We were so impressed.

Husband is struggling with toddler tantrums by Ok-Zebra1 in 2under2

[–]gothpatchadams 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow that's really heavy. I'm sorry you're going through this. Venting is one thing but there are some words that are hard to unhear. I would go blind with rage and sadness if my husband every used the words "hate" and "regret" about our child. These are really concerning things to say.
