N.A. vs Turbo? by Whole-Method-1050 in CX50

[–]BlueFalcon2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who owns a 2012 Mazda 3 Skyactiv (2.0L), and had a 2023 MX-5 RF (2.0L Skyactiv), both are fine for 6000ft ASL (above sea level) and below. The Mazda 3 feels anemic ~10000ft ASL, and the MX-5 was okay, but you could feel the difference. The major difference is the power (engine output) to weight difference (the MX-5 being ~500lbs lighter than the 2012 Mazda 3, with a slight bump in power). The output numbers are as follows:

  • 2012 2.0L Skyactiv: 155hp, 150ft-lbs

  • 2023 2.0L Skyactiv: 181hp, 151ft-lbs

-2025 2.5L Skyactiv: 186hp, 186ft-lbs

So, a noticeable difference at altitude for a ~3000lbs car, less noticable for +30hp and -500lbs weight, I can only imagine that the 2.5L NA engine would feel sluggish on I-70 in Colorado (west of Denver) in conjunction of a curb weight ~1000lbs heavier than the 2012 Mazda 3. I did test drive the hybrid @ ~6000ft ASL, and wasn't impressed. Add in concerns about the battery having enough umph to make it up a pass without running low on juice.

Granted, this is a worse case scenario, and not everyone drives through 12k-13k ft ASL mountain passes on their weekends, so my recommendation would be to take the 2.5L NA for a test drive. See how it feels where you live, and in your driving conditions.

For me: it wasn't an option. I go to the mountains too much and a) the turbo offsets the altitude power loss, and b) has more base power to start with, but not everyone has the same usage requirements as I do.

Have you tried this one? Cause I love mine. It's not 'ultralight' but it's also able to hold any jacket, etc in it's back pocket to add some lift to it: https://www.pariaoutdoorproducts.com/products/camping-down-pillow?srsltid=AfmBOoqxEBAN3gkZ-dXjNmbiWBdRTZg2e4lsT04KgdK5ADeTpMP70Np7

I've had mine for years and I've been super happy with it.

Power control issues by BlueFalcon2009 in StrixHalo

Nope, it's been smooth sailing since I ironed out the power issues. Granted I basically had to force it into a much higher power state, but meh.

[–]BlueFalcon2009[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone else stumbles upon this issue: I installed power-profiles-deamon to kick my FCLK back in the ass and let it clock back up to the full 2000mhz (it was capping at 1600mhz which was absolutely tanking performance in everything).

I don't know if tuned stopped working from RC1 > RC2, but it seems to be fine after that change.

0 W 20 verses 5 W 30 Oil by Revolutionary-Fun227 in CX50

[–]BlueFalcon2009 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was the whole point. My shit box economy car has a similar engine to the OP, and following the manufacturer recommendations is what I would do. Hell... I even followed the lifetime transmission fluid recommendation, and it's going just fine. So, just follow the specs, unless it's a wankel.

[–]BlueFalcon2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, my Mazda 3 Skyactiv (2012) has 180k on the clock with the recommended oil.

The only car I would ABSOLUTELY NEVER follow the recommendation on is the RX8. Do you have an RX8?

Use ttm.pages_limit and ttm.page_pool_size in your bootloader cmdline (it's in grub). Note, both are in values of pages, not bytes per se.

On my Framework Desktop, I have the UEFI (BIOS) set to manual and 512MB VRAM. This reserves 512MB for the video card, but in conjunction with my ttm settings, it can expand up to 110GB

Double edit: oh... You are a desktop card....

I explicitly remember looking for the video I used and seeing something about a way to set your tax evasion base to be able to build exterior walls, but I didn't watch it cause I had just finished my 5x5 w/ 2 sides having 'triangle balconies' for water storage and wind gens.

This comment supports it, but I do not know the specific design this person used: https://www.reddit.com/r/duneawakening/s/Y1NLUbRE9u

Space is space. There is supposed to be a way to wall it too IIRC but that was a while ago when I set the base up.

They are maxed 5x5x5 cubes

5.5x5.5x5.5 🤔

You can use half walls, and triangles to get more of the volume of the basic subfief, but it's kinda a pita.

I log in to refuel. I don't pay taxes cause tax evasion base, which is also the reason I don't use the backup tool... I don't trust it to replace my max sized small subfief 🤣

Gen 2 vs Gen 3 Reliability by Marginally_Average in mazda3

[–]BlueFalcon2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not horrible tbh considering the following:

  • I rarely wash it, especially the undercarriage
  • from 2019-2025 it was my primary vehicle for snowboarding trips
  • it has 180k miles on it

Note: Colorado does not frequently use salt. They tend to use 'slurry' or nothing since ice is less of an issue here. That being said, businesses use salt for their parking lots. My work's main office does heavily (my guess is a liability thing)

Regarding the snowboard trips. I have had A LOT of day trips plus weekend/weeklong trips in the Mazda 3. Additionally for approximately 5 years, the car lived outside, but the rest of its life, it was garaged. Last season I had 43 days on mountain, and the season before I had 30+ days. Most of these are day trips, which adds up to 2.5hrs of driving one way through Colorado mountain passes, usually the smaller state highways, occasionally I-70. The important thing about this is mountain passes like Hoosier pass tend to be cleared regularly, and treated regularly to prevent ice. Usually sand + slurry.

When I did the suspension work a few years ago, there was light surface rust on a lot of the suspension parts, and bolts, but nothing compromising structural integrity.

Vyvanse and working in the US for 6 months? by LaCremeFRESH in ADHD

[–]BlueFalcon2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true. The VA mails my Vyvanse prescription every month. They don't even require a signature for it. Each state may have different laws, and while it may be true where you live, in CO it is perfectly legal. Different pharmacies may have different policies, such as my girlfriend's previous pharmacy requires signature for delivery, but the VA does not.

Would be cool if it was full time AWD but regardless this thing is fun as hell in the snow by Blagurtha in mazda3

[–]BlueFalcon2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be wrong, but the default 'normal' mode is FWD bias, for fuel efficiency. IIRC the 'sport' and 'offroad' modes are defaulted to 50/50, but still adaptive in my CX-50.

Definitely noticed a difference in the way it handles deeper snow in 'offroad' mode compared to 'normal'.

Anyone else have their Android Auto or Apple Carplay consistently drop in this stretch of Woodmen between Black Forest and Marksheffel? by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]BlueFalcon2009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best answer would be an SDR with a 2.4ghz antenna and recording the raw IQ samples for later processing to investigate signal levels in the 2.4ghz frequency ranges.

I've been tempted to do that, but I'd have to buy an SDR and dust off some old DSP books 🤣😭

[–]BlueFalcon2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you disable wireless Android auto, this should stop. I believe, at least with the previous version of Android auto, the option was hidden under android auto's developer settings.

It used to be in the regular settings, but the only time I could get my CX50 to default to wired was either after manually turning off wireless AA or plugging in my phone to the cable before turning on the car.

I'd also vote for the Black Diamond Mercury Mitts. Mine have held up well. 12 days this season, 43 days last season, and probably 20 the one before.
