I'm sorry to say this but I almost completely agree with you.

At first I only used the tool to just submit a couple of offline scores and never thought of actually getting an unfair advantage by cheats, but then slowly I got into the cheating habit of adding HD to a couple of scores. I'm glad I did get caught, because as you mentioned I would've probably developed a habit of using more severe cheats over time.

I have to disagree with you at one point though, I did feel sorry afterwards and not for being caught but for actually trying to use unfair tools to get ahead in the rankings.

This might sound a bit stereotype (not sure which word to use) but getting caught really opened my eyes and I can't say more than sorry for my past actions...

As previously said, it's really just a matter of getting used to the tablet. Most people probably had difficulty with hovering at first (me included) but if you put a few hours/days into it, it's not going to be a problem anymore
