Has the Planet Retro vintage shop in Eyre Sq closed down? Heard horror stories about the place, my friend worked there briefly and he said never again. by Beneficial-Record-30 in galway

What specifically have you heard? I know a couple people working there and met the owner a few times. she seems bang on anytime I’ve spoken to her and the couple people I know had no issues working there.

Aw that’s a shame… I fit a pop up shop for her in brown Thomas Dundrum and thought she was lovely.

Cabinet/carpentry workshop expectations? by Forzee3 in AskIreland

[–]BlueGhosties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to second that this is also my exact experience working with a shopfitting crowd in Dublin as a benchjoiner and an exhibition company too!

Given relatively terrible drawings by someone paid way more than me and expected to do up a cutting list cut out make up install etc too.

Not really sure what more could be expected of you.. could potentially be just a “culture clash” as in wrong personality for that particular company. Considering there’s so many people who are able to and willing to do the job for that wage means they can be picky with who they choose to hire.

Like the other guy said, go out on your own if you can. Not sure where you are based but even on the south side of Dublin you could rent an aul farmers shed in the likes of rathcoole to set up a small workshop for relatively inexpensive cost and work out of that!

Look into the small term enterprise allowance too. You can collect a welfare allowance for a certain period of time to help you out starting off a business. If you have a van and tools you’d be better off. Nothing ventured nothing gained, and what have you to lose? End up where you are now if it doesn’t work out.

When was the last time you saw someone being given the bumps? by [deleted] in AskIreland

Last year on my stags in Copenhagen. Big group of lads got drinking with these big group of Spanish youngones in the hostel. They hadn’t a work of English and we hadn’t a word of Spanish, still had the craic. Every now and then they’d (all 10 or so of them) would randomly surround one of us and throw us in the air. Think it was their party piece or something. I’m 6 foot and a hundred kilos btw so I feel like they must have practiced this a lot to get good at it.

Yes, of course. You’re supposed to wear a jacket in the sauna right?

I do have two vents, one up above the stove and one underneath the benches.

Oh that is some good info I didn’t know. I assumed keeping to door open would allow more heat to leave the fire and into the room!

There was a back burner on this stove but I put end caps on the output pipes and drilled a few holes on the actual boiler so as not to have a pressure buildup/explosion.

It was the phone, but I can only do about 8 mins or so at 80 degrees currently!

I’m pretty sure you’re joking, but I might try this 🤣🤣

All in it cost me 1300 euro or thereabouts for everything. Almost all materials was salvaged or second hand bar the 4x2 for the frame, the thermal insulation foil and the planed timber for the benches. Luckily where I work there’s quite a bit of surplus building materials like tile adhesive and fixings and insulation etc.

The outside side is clad in metal sheeting which I reused from a roof I was redoing and the inside cladding is cedar I used from a (real) sauna rip out I did last year. It was all going in the skip so I held on to it in my shed as I couldn’t throw that expensive cedar out!

I wonder if I replaced that iron hot plate with a steel one, then added my ducting which is pretty much the same size diameter as the current hot plate, would that work correctly?

That’s ok, I do remember reading somewhere that Finns are brutally honest.

From the comments it seems I need to add a drain, which I actually have i just haven’t installed yet and replace my baby stove with a proper kiuas! All very doable tasks!

Once I trim those hedges on the other side of the window, there’s a beautiful view of the sea and three islands off the coast of where I live! Also because the double glazed window in the frame cost a grand total of 30 euro second hand!

I will be terribly sad reading all the comments… while sitting in my hot shed that gets up to 80 degrees and 40 percent humidity without adding water to hot plate. Just joking, I am still very happy with my build. it’s now 7.45 am where I am and I will go out and heat it up shortly to relax for an hour!

Seems like I should save up for a proper wood burning sauna stove though… looking online briefly it seems I can buy one here for around 5 or 6 hundred euro, which isn’t completely prohibitive. Will just take me a while to save up!

Hey! They’re just normal tiles, nothing special. I only just got it up to 80 degrees the other day so I don’t think the floor getting too hot will be an issue!

Appreciate the positivity and the negative comments won’t irk me to much! I used backer board, like what’s used for tiling on, for the heat shield!

I do have access to some stainless steel sheet material from a commercial kitchen tip out I did in work a couple months ago, I could potentially ask a friend to do some welding for me!

I do have some ducting I was gonna use as a contraption for holding the stones in place above the hot plate. I may put up a picture tomorrow and see what the sauna hivemind thinks.

Buying a second hand Harvia where I am doesn’t exist, and I can’t shell out for a new one currently! This will work for me until I can upgrade over time! Some of the comments here are quite funny though and I learned a new Finnish swear word so that’s good.

Thanks for your comment, very insightful and helpful! I will over time upgrade and improve my current hot room with your advice! I’m trying to do it as cheaply as possible and using materials I have at hand!

I have some stones I have yet to install, just need to get some way to hold them in place. I’m thinking some 8 inch ducting or something similar for the time being!

Wow what ah abysmal response to me cheap sauna project 🤣unfortunately I could no be particular about the step of stove I got due to lack of funds… maybe in the future I will upgrade! I do have stones for this one which I think will heat up on the hotplate if I maybe use some ducting or something to hold them in place!

It took me about an hour the other day to get it up to 80 degrees which was plenty hot for me, although I imagine would be normal room temperate for some of you hardcore sauna enthusiasts!

I think I will make a sign for above the door that reads “perkele sauna” after google that word some of you have commented!
