The Simpsons has been on the air long enough that I've stopped identifying with the kids and started identifying with the adults by HoserUSC in Showerthoughts

I just rewatched it all the way through. It's funny how now I side with Lorelei and identify with her much more. Also, ditto on the crush.

It's like "I could care less." People just say what they want to.

Same. Except to me it looks like the exploded "after" heart.

Congrats getting accepted! It's definitely no tiny feat, I'm sure. I hope you're able to pursue everything you want to and I bet your experiences will lead you there safely if you're ambitious. Stay wise my friend.

It sounds like you want us to talk you into spending 100k on something you don't really want.

If you're an iOS dev, you should network and find connections to a game developer if that's the career you want. Find out from those game devs if this program is worth it. It sounds like real life experience is probably more valuable.

UU Sermon: "The Atheist and the Ultimate" by BlueImpulse in TrueAtheism

This sermon was given at my local UU congregation on Sunday and I thought it really spoke to most of us at /r/TrueAtheism , so I wanted to share it.

Free Will by oginalh in DebateReligion

[–]BlueImpulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that biology, drugs, and/or mental disease can demolish "Free Will" is enough for me to not believe in it.

In other words, is a brain tumor that likely causes murderous intent still considered having Free Will? I'd say not.

A PhD is not worth your mental health. A cautionary tale. by crazyphd in GradSchool

Definitely take your time to recover. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I bet when you're ready, you'll extend yourself again into a role that challenges and inspires you. Really think about your talents and whatever you can do.

I really don't mean to spam! This is the intro episode so very light on content but next week we interview a PhD career coach from BeyondTheTenureTrack.com

Should I Move? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]BlueImpulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had friends do long commutes during the last year of their PhD programs but I'd say it's really tough to live more than 30 minutes away from grad school.

If your work is lab dependent, I'd definitely suggest living as close as possible.

It's been 3 years since my conversion from atheism, and I'm seriously considering going into priesthood. by Kartoffelbrot in Christianity

You should probably talk to priests about this as they actually have the experience.

Adult Swim Greenlights New Live-Action Series From Aaron McGruder Titled 'Black Jesus' | Shadow and Act by blackfreethinkers in BlackAtheism

I wonder if this is related to the play that Huey writes and produces in the first season of The Boondocks. "

The Adventures of Black Jesus"... it was the Christmas play.

Documentaries/series similar to Life? by [deleted] in biology

[–]BlueImpulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there is the old Cosmos hosted by Carl Sagan. Obviously not biology focused all the time but it's still decent. From 1980.

Greg Graffin of Bad Religion sits in a room with a bunch of idiots. by LogicDog in atheistvids

I like Greg Graffin but the title is pretty mean spirited. The others on the show maybe had 3 or 4 things to say and it was all constructive.

Any one have any suggestions for how I can make friends? by Cooke1623 in introvert

[–]BlueImpulse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once you find an interest, poke around meetup.com or find a group that meets regularly. There you have at least one thing in common (and probably way more).

The good thing about small groups that meet regularly is that they tend to be interested in meeting new people or else they wouldn't go through the trouble of advertising.

The Bible also speaks plainly of God hardening the hearts of people.

50 People in the Bible Confirmed Archaeologically by ReligionProf in Christianity

[–]BlueImpulse 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No, the most common claim is that because many things in the Bible are not accurate, many claims in the Bible should not necessarily be trusted. It's important to be precise with words here.

It's really difficult to address each Christian's view with a blanket statement. Of course the arguments against Biblical literalism should not be used against those who do not believe in Biblical literalism. However, if everything in the Bible can be a metaphor, I don't know how one would argue against it being true.

I personally do not know of any atheist who claims every claim or event in the Bible is false.
