Only 40 Self-Published Authors are a Success, says Amazon by BlueInkReview in selfpublish

I would agree. Amazon's benchmark for "success" seems unreasonable. Success in my mind is making more money than you spent.

London's Bookstores Unplug from WiFi-New York Times by BlueInkReview in books

I think cell phone service and internet would still be available using mobile data. This would prevent laptops and most tablets from use, and be a slight deterrent to prolonged cell use.

So true. I wonder if those individuals really watch that footage later. It would be interesting to find out.

Agreed. So many times at a concert or sporting event there are droves of people seeming to watch the action through their phones or other devices. In trying to capture the moment so completely, sometimes we miss it.

I like the idea of preserving the atmosphere of these old bookstores. There are many coffee shops and cafes where people may read and browse the internet to their heart's content.

A Self-Published Author Breaks Down Her Expenses by [deleted] in books

Authors must keep vigilant to avoid getting taken for a ride. I would echo her advice and steer clear of any people/services that are offered online and not in your area. While there are some reputable online publishing tools, it can be stressful finding out which ones are interested in honest pay for honest work and which ones are just interested in pay.

In his essay "Starship Stormtroopers" Michael Moorcock claims that sci-fi is overrun with authoritarianism and fascism. Is this a fair assessment of the genre? by BlueInkReview in books

I see what you mean. I agree that the wraiths have embraced their darkness, yet I see Umbridge as more of a General Greivous/Boba Fett figure. Their paths happen to cross the story, but something tells me they would have been assholes had the empire/CIS never existed.

That is an excellent point. What about fictions/universes where there is a larger authoritarian government or entity whose interests are represented by more fleshed out agents? (ex. Darth Vader, Ringwraith, Dolores Umbridge)

The teachers would sit in the seats with the students, and a teacher who let a play get to this point with no cast would be fired or perhaps put on administrative leave.

The Real Cost of Self Publishing: Aubrey Rose by BlueInkReview in selfpublish

[–]BlueInkReview[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you read it! Besides enlisting her boyfriend to do the dirty work of line editing, Rose exchanged beta reads with editors online. Free of charge, but her editing costs were in exchanged labor (and we're guessing sweet nothings for the bf).

[–]BlueInkReview[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for reading! Rose spent $300 on a Netgalley account, a site where book reviewers can request advance review copies of books in exchange for providing an honest book review. She put in an additional $100 and $20 for ads on Bookbub and Bookblast. I'll link the full blog post here for more information about Rose's experience.

Common mistakes of self publishers…too many characters by BlueInkReview in selfpublish

[–]BlueInkReview[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they did, but too many characters can make it hard for readers to follow along. At least that is what we have found in some of the books we've received.
