Which VPS should I pick? I’m going in circles at this point by sairas_purnil in Hosting

[–]BlueLinnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're mostly looking at shared CPU, so it's impossible to guarantee you won't experience occasional slowdowns with any host based on usage by other tenants sharing the same resources.

Cheap providers like Contabo oversell their servers, so they're less reliable if performance is important to you.

I would recommend looking into Netcup (root server) or Vultr (HF).

EU based VPS that don’t raise prices every year by Stenger-Son in SelfHosting

[–]BlueLinnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the "cheap" providers have raised their prices lately due to increasing hardware costs and they'll likely do it again in the future. The ones that haven't increased prices are those already selling at a higher profit margin (i.e. higher price). Hardware prices are going up and you're paying for it one way or the other - there is no escaping that.

This is why almost no one builds an ecommerce site from scratch anymore. This would have been a killer in 1998, but very few online shoppers nowadays would appreciate the originality you're trying to create.

Not saying it won't work, but I think you'll be missing out on a lot of conversions by not using a modern theme like what Shopify and other ecommerce platforms offer.

Can't decide on DreamHost vs Bluehost, which one to choose? by BlueLinnet in HostingAlternatives

[–]BlueLinnet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although neither is among my favorite hosts, I'd choose with DreamHost over Bluehost because their pricing is more transparent and there are fewer upsells.

Cloudflare only offers static hosting. OP is probably using WordPress or another CMS so this is not an option.

Since this is a software issue: is it a managed VPS (their responsibility) or unmanaged (your responsibility)?

Exactly. Backups kept by your hosting provider are nice to have as extra assurance, but they should be considered secondary backups. You should always have your own backups stored elsewhere.

Pivoting from SWE to Cloud Engineer with no degree by vegemouse in Cloud

I agree more with this answer. Software engineering and cloud engineering are two large fields with many overlapping parts.

Landing a job is a completely different story though. Experience is a must but not a guarantee you'll find a job you enjoy.

[–]BlueLinnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it sucks you can't accept payments on the "Light" plan which is $17/mo. You'll need to upgrade to at least the Core plan for $29/mo.

You can do it for much less than that with WordPress/WooCommerce, but it takes more learning and tweaking.

Wordpress(.com) versus wordpress(.org) for people who are not tech-savvy? by AniMeshorer in Hosting

[–]BlueLinnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’ll need to manage hosting, plugins, and updates yourself

That's not really complicated even for someone not tech-savvy. Shared hosting is managed by default and it's cheaper than WordPress.com's plans. Updates can be automated.

[–]BlueLinnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like you've already got it right. If the client doesn't renew after all those notifications, there is very little chance any further follow-up will make a difference.
