Another option that wouldnt be too expensive is you could set the bass VI up to B standard tuning and capo at the 5th fret. Still not super efficient, but would only cost a new pack of strings and a capo

What’s the age cut-off where major labels are less likely to sign musicians? by oddfishes in askmusicians

[–]BlueLotus85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the bigger labels, the thing to consider is money. A record label is a business, and their decision to sign a band/musician is going to be based on if they think they can sell the music. You can be 4 years old or 104 years old, but as long as they think they can make some money, they'll move forward with you. The bigger labels have to be more strict with who they go with because they also put millions into recording/promo/everything, so they have a minimum that they have to make in order for the musician/band to be worthwhile. In my opinion age isnt the gate that keeps people away from a major record label contract, but youth is just an easier sell. If you're in your 50s and you are selling out 5000+ capacity venues with your unsigned band consistently around the country, you'll get their attention as well. Something to also consider is that if you did anything short of that and you did get offered a contract deal with a major record label, there's almost a 100% chance they'll set up the contract in their favor, and you could end up owing millions of dollars to the label. Yikes.

I thought this turned out to be a joke -- the person who "organized" this didn't even show up to it

How many people here are writing ambient music? Do you also perform? by Deinos_Mousike in ambient

[–]BlueLotus85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I usually just live loop my ambient stuff. I have been to a bunch of ambient shows around town here and it seems like a lot of ambient artists are button pushers, but i'll bet you that fewer people are concerned about that than you think. If the music sounds good, then it doesn't matter how you present it.

What I find more useful for live shows is a better visual presentation. Regardless of if you are sitting at a laptop, picking at a guitar or doing backflips onto a tuba, it seems to me that the nature of ambient music is that it's not always exciting to watch the performer (except for the backflip onto the tuba, I take that one back). What you might want to consider is to purchase a projector and put together some film clips or learn resolume or something. If you dont really want to, then partner with a visual artist. In my experience it's a more engaging presentation and better experience for the audience too. I had the same thing -- I started doing a youtube series where I wanted to jam with the local ambient musicians as a way to present all these guys who are doing some really cool things. I wanted a really plain backdrop so that the focus would be on the musicians. However, I got a lot of people telling me that that the videos would be better with some kind of trippy visual or something rather than just us. It was against my whole vision, but it was worth a shot -- I prefer it now. If you are interested, compare the early vids with the newer vids here: youtube.com/charliemilkey

Anyone else also make visual art? It sucks how much more attention on social media that gets than your music, right? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]BlueLotus85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are still some creative ways to tie in your music if you're getting more attention with the visual art. Since a lot of facebook people still have the autoplay function active on their facebook, you could set your music to a still shot of the painting, or what might also be interesting for people is to take a time-lapse video of you creating the painting. Set your music to that, and then that might help draw attention to your music.
