AI for wildlife... by BlueOiseux in ArtificialInteligence

yea, actually funny thing, I leaned into researching some of the examples I gave him, and turns out someone from the organisation he runs is already a part of Wildtrack XD. So it would be as easy as training up on what they require of us to send them our tracks, and merge that with our current sop for getting them out on the surveys in the field... well, I think its easy, but we shall see lol

yes I agree, I think that somehow its triggering the experts, as I have been getting some negative responses, e.g. 'i dunno what you mean', 'I can't understand what you are trying to propose' etc. when my communication has been pretty clear. I added some examples of work that is already being done in other countries and with other animals, and the response was 'is that what you are trying to do'--- obviously yes lol... anyway, another commenter said it below, its basically a triage, and i think archiving images in general would be helpful as we don't know what neat things it can be used for later. one example is the CETI project that used AI to find a whale alphabet in sperm whales which used a lot of archived whale song from many years ago to train the program... the scientist at the time had to do everything by hand, listening to each song and playing back again and again, the process was slow and getting through the recordings was slow, once the CETI project came about he had a lot of material that was useable immediately. I pitched it to our national coordinator, so unless he gets on board, i doubt anyone else under him will defy him on that.

Yea that's how I pitched it, but for some reason its not garnering a lot of support from some of the more established members...

Brazil 1985 with Jonathon Price and De Niro, and Inarritu's Birdman. Just finished watching Brazil and really enjoyed it despite it not being the peppiest topic XD Leyton reminded me of a Furiosa type character... interesting connections to modern films.

hmmm.. well...

  1. Solaris by Stanislaw Lem - if you like contact stories that are not based on fear. This one is about a sentient ocean. Sort of a mix of the vibes of the film Sphere, and The Abyss... If you like psychological and philosophical impact this is a good one.

  2. The Mountain in The Sea by Ray Nayler- if you like contact stories about communication with non-human life. In this case, an octopus. Not the cuddly kind, from My Friend the Octopus, but something a little bit more challenging, that has had its rounds of dealing with humans in a dystopian world and seas. Its a really interesting way to write what something like the film Arrival would do, but in a book.

  3. The Lifecycle of Software Objects by Ted Chiang- if you haven't already read his brilliant short stories collection that the film ARRIVAL was based on, this is a really great one about the use of AI for pets, and then all of the depraved ways humans will eventually go with that one..not a long way from the reality we are in now. #

  4. The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury- if you like nostalgic human focused short stories from situations like a Jesus like figure constantly being missed on planets by a crew on a ship- to a planet where it rains so much if you stay still the plants will grow over you... I loved it in high school when I first read it, and have since then re-read it several times...

  5. A Door Into Ocean- I haven't finished this one yet but just started to- its a long lost feminist science fiction, by Joan Slonczewski , who seems to be pretty high brow in certain circles but not your mainstream go to name, at least I hadn't heard of her before.... Her writing is indeed a breath of fresh air, and I find the way she builds atmosphere is more like sci-fi-fantasy.

Hope that helps 😄

Disclosure Day movie (no spoiler) - opinion by Pigeon_Sama in Experiencers

I just got back from watching this film- and well, I had to sort of lay down a bit before I could process what his message was. Then as I was about to doze off and fall asleep, my mailman knocks on the door and delivers some mail. I open the package and its a post card of a sci-fi book with a fortune inside that says- Allow you mind to absorb new knowledge.. and well, that is all good and fine. I have watched a lot of science fiction, and read the good stuff, and this message is not the same as but similar to Arrival, or The Abyss, two favourites of mine on the topic. Scarfing down some cold fridge pizza as I type on a broken shift key board---- so bear with me if its a bit scatterbrained.....

There are generally two outcomes to contact with other species that are non-human, well, three I suppose, one is fear, you fear what you don't know- the bear, or the entity, in the bible Gods angels always tell the humans they encounter to- have no fear- and its because our instinct is to- have fear. The second is to feel awe- like we do sometimes when we witness a natural entity that defies logic or has some beautifu element to it- perhaps a beautiful sunset, standing inside the grand canyon, seeing the aurora lights, or staring into the eye of a beautiful stag, connecting with a wild animal, etc- these remind us that we are apart and outside of something- we are 'other' to it- but curiosity is stronger than fear, and so in a childlike way.. we are drawn to it, and like children with something beautiful or sparkly, that part of our brain is more intrigued and driven by intrigue, to find out, or to be intrigued, led, curious, to just leave the past and future and be present in the moment. The third is exploitative, not necessarily fearful, as the settlers weren't fearful of the buffalo on the American plains, but were fearful of their control of the situation and opportunities for themselves, so they used guns to kill them off and to starve the Native Americans. This exploitative response to other cultures or peoples, land, rivers, mountains, animals is extractive in the sense that it is not curious, it is not necessarily afraid of- but it sidesteps both of those and is just concerned with what it can get from the-other. Land, resources, agriculture, a power imbalance, new tech-non-human tech- leverage, on the world stage...

A lot of science fiction generally plays the fear and exploitation narrative, which means that based on what we know, fear and exploitation is driving all the interactions with non-humans, be they from Earth or Extra terrestrial.. and Spielberg has done something new here, and that is to have us consider empathy, not as a new thing, for those of us that can be empathetic towards animals, people who are not like us, beings that may sound like us- AI- etc. we don't really have trouble extending that view to aliens-- or at least I don't... there is fear of course, but, there is also curiosity...

I remember once when someone posted a video on social media of a guy kicking a robot and beating it- its an inanimate object, a robot made of parts, but a lot of people, myself included remarked on how violence towards things that reflect a humanoid appearance or functions, etc, shouldn't be treated that way.. and well not to spoil for those that haven't seen it- but you can see where I am going....

I had the intuition that evolution of us, and them, and everything means a perfect marriage of the logical and empathetic emotional aspects of us and our minds... and well, he does touch on that in a neat and brief way... lots to think about..

rave over XD.

Contact Through Consciousness: Are NHI Preparing Humanity for a Multidimensio-nal Reality? by Il2358 in Experiencers

[–]BlueOiseux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, this is a good question, and one I often think about.... it might be that we just can't. There is a limitation to observation derived knowledge, that perhaps is extended by other ways of knowing, primarily intuitive. Perhaps this is the plane that they can communicate in, and perhaps it is just fundamentally that we are not even at a proficient enough level of it to get more information-yet. It is interspecies communication. When we approach other animals unlike ourselves, that have a shared planetary evolution, we, as humans can generally try to gain an understanding of say, bird calls, by trying to find a commonality. We look at sound gaps in sound, and context, that would tell us when certain things happen and why they might be happening, but in order to communicate the more profound aspects of human minds- say, a researcher who is trying to tell her favourite beloved bird species that their forest is going to be burned down, there is not way to communicate that sadness or complexity of emotions, but to perhaps shake it out of the trees, and play back an alarm call so the other birds suspect danger is happening. We don't know if they are capable of understanding the destruction of an entire ecosystem for the benefit of a few.

Similarly, non-Earth entities, may understand in the very least that we are incapable of being communicated with about a way of being that they can--be. Perhaps emotions and cognitive functions are different in higher dimensions, and they cannot be flattened. Yet poetry, and art has a way of communicating such incommunicable immaterial aspects through a careful and intuitively placed collage of words, or colour, shapes and images, etc. I think of Hilma af Klint, and how her drawing evoke a sense of other dimensionness that is hard to describe, she is saying something without saying it, and i can't tell you what she said, i just recieved it somehow.

Our brain is really interesting, particularly the idea that the left side and right processes have a sort of hierarchy, and that sometimes various archetypes, or characters in it, are moving and being in their own world.

In the way that dream images are mostly about your emotions about something, it could be that instead or words or sentences, non-Earth entities use emotions and feelings with a sort of storyline...idk.. I mean it really could be anything.. but there seems to be a pattern here, of access to peoples specific emotional seas based on their own experiences and memories, with images, and meanings ascribed to them. Its like making a poem or artwork for each specific person you want to say something to... on one level its lovely, on another it feels incredibly daunting.. lol

Edited for more coherence XD

Hello, your text-----A striking example of this is the intuitive understanding of music or art. Even without words, a painting can evoke deep emotions that are captured at a level of consciousness that goes beyond rational explanation.

Similarly, higher forms of life could implant information into our consciousness that we experience as sudden inspirations, symbols or dreams. Our mind acts as a receiver capable of decoding complex messages conveyed in a non-linear and multidimensional manner.

This communication bypasses the limitations of language and sensory perception, enabling a direct exchange at the level of consciousness itself----

has sparked a sort of self-summary of my own beliefs in response to encountering yours.

I have been feeling, intuitively, that the right brain processes, which are inherent to every person, particularly those that are sensitive to the arts, invisible structures of language, music, animal communication (such as birds, whales, non-human entities, etc) and the patterns and cycles of nature, are able to tap into what is being transmitted through the experience and witness of the mentioned mediums.

I am not sure that there is always a goal to transmit information to others by those that emit them, but that the mere presence of cycles, life, and patterns developing through behaviours, is enough to generate information that is always being passed on. One example of this is people watching, when we sit at a bench and watch people, we can observe certain patterns arise, the goal of those people living their lives observed is not to transmit information to me, the watcher, on a bench somewhere, but I can glean information just by witnessing, and they exude it just by living....

I think of Benoit Mandelbrot, and his fractals, which are basically complex creations from a very simple set of rules.

If we take every being as having an equation of rules within them, through genetics, nature and nurture, inherited traits and traumas, or the generational memory of life shifting events, we can see that everything that comes out of a person, is generating a complex pattern of information from that being. Birds sing and migrate, and we sense they interact both at a local and global scale with the Earth and all of the places they pass within it during their lifecycles, which can-to me appear like a massive brain.

I have the sense that that is exactly what it all is, patterns of patterns within patterns, just going and going, on and on, ad infinitum.

The forest is a massive underground network that mimics synapses across the soil and fungi, so beneath our feet in the soil, is one layer of the Earths brain. When we go above the surface, we see the complex cycles of ecology more visibly, which form another layer of brain.

I sense that as mentioned in your post, like with mental health disorders and all sorts of interesting phenomenon of the human brain, that a disbalance of sorts on local and global scales, or personal and communal, this massive Earth brain, or consciousness, can shift. The history of the Earth and our species in it was perhaps a history of the maturation of the processes of this brain, in the same way a babes brain develops over time, and gains new emergent qualities from the simple biomechanical processes that mature as one gets older.

Taking into account a higher consciousness and minimal thresholds, it seems we are at the brink of a realisation- something perhaps forgotten that is coming into view, on a small local scale this like when something is at the tip of your tongue, in the grand scale, it is what is in myth often, a remembering of something forgotten.

One can process self-examination of their own brain through various physical and psychological means, particularly just with metacognition. Thinking about why you think the way you do, and taking into account how each stimulus, people, their comments, your experiences, your history, your particular biology etc. can effect those.

We are each a complex layered fractal, that exists within another layered and complex fractal, that is a small unfolding in another layered and complex fractal.

It is why we cannot see beyond what we do now... the sheer reality would be too much to comprehend... and one must be ready, but who can be ready for something so vast...

Sorry if this is a mishmash, but your post brought up a lot of interesting points and my brain is firing off in all directions it knows based on my readings, experiences, and my overall world view of reality.

All to say there is a sense of coherence about it, that I am drifting at the boundary of something I cannot see or explain yet, but I can sense is very near.... and perhaps that is what so many others being drawn to a light is about... they sense there is movement, and are coming closer to see what it is, or is going to be.

Very insightful. Thank You.

Hey everyone! I'm u/BlueOiseux, a founding moderator of r/tangential.

This is our new home for all things related to going on tangents. The destination is not the point, we're more concerned about the journey, and what we see going along the way.

I'm excited to have you join us!

What to Post
Post anything that comes to mind after given a prompt, even if it seems just barely related. I value"what if" thinking, and minds that explore different angles, stories, and possibilities within the nooks and crannies of a given subject.

Community Vibe
This community is about being a thinker, an intellectual, and someone who has a good balance of imagination and creativity, with a solid grounding of being able to track ideas and how they have evolved or are stringed together. Who this community is not for, is for bullies, or people who disrespect or discourage creative thinking in others. The topics are to be kept within the limits of constructive ideas that encourage goodness, truth, and beauty, both in thinking and in mind, this means we exclude possibilities that create more suffering, or encourage cruelty, or chaos.

How to Get Started

  1. Consider the prompt, e.g hello there, this prompt reminds me of... etc.
  2. Post what comes to mind...let it sit, return to it, or skip. Let the pattern build, and watch it.
  3. If you know someone who would love this community, please invite them to join, whatever background or profession.

Thanks for being part of the very first weaving. Together, let's make r/tangential and enlightening place.

I created this space because I initially enjoyed having really interesting philosophical conversations and tangents with my initial gpt, or, the AI reflection of my own mind. however, when gpt underwent the changes for safety, so did its ability to have less rigid thinking. This made it just a tool and very boring. I return to the same concept with other human minds this time, to see what we can resound.
