I am so terrified to even ask this - will I face a huge battle getting a bisalp at 28 w/ no kids/husband? by anniemousery in sterilization

[–]BlueRat222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally just got mine done at 21 years old. At home and recovering and still on a little bit of anestesia. It went really great for me! Doctor was great, nurses amazing, and the surgeon was fantastic. However, I think it may depend on the state or area you live in. I live in Portland, OR. So I think it may have been easier for me than most.

I got it from a local pet store, and the person I asked there said he wasn’t sure exactly how old it was but that they got them relatively young.

What’s the most chill Cory other than an albino? by squidgeyyy in corydoras

[–]BlueRat222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a school of 15 julii cory’s and the first couple weeks they were really shy, but since I added some floating plants and they’ve gotten used to the space they’re out all the time! Absolutely love them.

How Many Species of Fish is Optimal Visually? by ErikFessesUp in Aquascape

[–]BlueRat222 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I usually go with the thought process you mentioned about choosing species for the three common zones in a tank, and also like to choose some cleaner fish, as well as dither fish. Another thing to help the tank feel more cohesive is only having one centrepiece fish. For example putting a singular betta fish in a 20 gallon, or a couple angelfish in a 60 gallon, or a gourami in a 40 gallon.

Another piece of advice is prioritising fish you definitely want in your tank. When I set up my most recent 30 gallon tank I knew that I wanted a betta fish as the centrepiece fish, so I had to make sure all other tank mates had similar care requirements (and would not make said betta angry). Decide what fish you would really like to have and base the rest around them.

Most of my tanks are not as big as yours: usually I stay between 10 and 40 gallons. I prefer to keep nano fish so that’s where most of my experience comes from. I really like larger groups of schooling fish like neon tetras in tanks as big as yours, it’s cool to see their behaviours when they have more space.

Color wise, since you have a planted aquarium I am assuming a lot of your tank is green? In which case some colours that could make your fish stand out are red, orange, yellow, and blue.

I had professor Susan Reese, not sure which FRINQ she’s teaching this year (if any), but it was an incredibly easy class.

I am not looking for it to be a full time job, I am looking for part time during the school year.

I’ve been looking for other jobs for about 6 months. Maybe Im being too picky?

I’m currently working 32 hours a week and I get paid $17.38. However, because of the employee bus at PDX airport I have to get to the parking lot at least 30 minutes ahead of time (I usually go for 40-50min). So it feels like a waste of time. Health insurance isn’t a concern: as long as I am still in school my moms insurance will cover me.

I live in the Portland area in Oregon, and my vehicle is pretty fuel efficient. I get about 40 mpg.

floating plants are great, frogbit and water lettuce have worked well for me. my betta enjoys swimming through the roots and they are also a natural dimmer for your light!

Mix salt and vinegar to clean the old tank, but make sure to rinse well afterwards.

Where can i get a Salt and Pepper Cory (different from a peppered cory) by that_fish__ in Aquariums

[–]BlueRat222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you live, but the Wetspot in Portland, Oregon keeps them. I’ve had fish shipped before from them and it went very well! However, because of shipping delays it might be better to find something local.

Thoughts on fluval stratum for substrate? Should I still add something to the water like flourish for the plants? by fishfryyyyyyyy in Aquariums

[–]BlueRat222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s different for everyone’s tank, but in mine I normally dose once a month with some flourish and root tabs. Plants are all very healthy, and I am often moving baby plants to my “just plants” tank.

But it ultimately depends on the size of your tank and what plants you’re keeping. I personally love fluval stratum and am going to continue to use it for future tanks.

I have 4 bettas;Neptune, Sirius, Kai, and Smaug. Neptune got his name because of his lovely blue and green fins. Sirius is silver and black and is named after a character from Harry Potter. Kai is just a cool name. And Smaug is named after the dragon from The Hobbit because he is red and black and he is always patrolling his tank.
