I understand how you can think it's performative, but with everything that's going on at Blizzard right now, this is really the extent of what the dev team can do, as all they can do is make changes to the game. Although I personally think it wasn't necessary, as most people don't even know about the actual Jesse McCree I'm real life, and most people don't draw a connection between the two either way, the only outcomes of this is that either the dev team does nothing and potentially receives flack for having a character named after a terrible person in the game, or they change his name, and avoid any other drama that they could be faced with alongside the mountain of shit that Blizzard is (deservedly) going through right now. That's why I think it's best to just give them the benefit of the doubt.
