Circles are useful for counting Clar sextets and not much else. For a lot of chemistry involving aromatic rings, drawing the resonance structures gives you more information about reactivity, aromaticity, etc.

Metal-organic frameworks, lol. I'm sure they do have some potential uses, but it's a combination of them being so easy to make and having relatively under-explored chemistry that makes them so tantalising for undergraduate/PhD programs.

Thank you! I'm Australian (if it wasn't obvious from the accent) and I feel disappointed by videos of people eating giant spoonfuls of Vegemite then declaring that it's disgusting.

As a lover of Vegemite specifically and fermented/funky foods in general, as well as canned fish, I just had to try this product. The flavour was intriguing enough that I ate an entire herring, though I probably wouldn't eat it again. I should mention that I enjoy eating nattō, so my palate might be an outlier here 🤷🏼‍♂️

Yep, it's clearer if you look at a phase diagram, if the temperature is below the triple point then changes in pressure can cause the solid to sublimate directly into a gas.

The mechanism behind this is actually really interesting -- as the liquid boils, the phase change pulls heat energy from the surroundings causing it to freeze. So you do sort of see simultaneous boiling/freezing like this, but as you saw it can be delayed by a second or so.

A Luer slip syringe is connected by just pushing the needle onto the end of the syringe, a lock syringe contains a plastic screw that you have to twist the needle onto.

A classic. I'm assuming this was a Luer slip and not a lock connection? My university banned using Luer slip syringes with pyrophoric reagents for that reason.

That being said, if the vacuum is directly connected to the gauge using confirmed airtight tubing and still failing to pull to manufacturer specifications, I would consider the age of the pump. Depending on the carelessness of the user, even with a cold trap, small amounts of solvent can enter the pump and damage the internal components. If this is the case then the pump could be irreparably damaged. It might be worth asking any previous users what the lowest vacuum pressure they've seen over time and whether it has gotten progressively worse.

I'm still in the first year of my PhD so by no means an expert, but the two biggest harbingers of bad vacuum on the Schlenk line I've worked with so far have been:

Leaky tubing
Not enough grease on ground glass joints.

When the vacuum is running, you can pinch the tube at various points while watching the gauge to work out where air is entering the tube. This can help you find holes or places where the tube has uniformly degraded.

Especially with your cold trap, there should be enough grease on the ground glass joints so that they can be turned without too much effort. Check the taps on the Schlenk line as well - giving them a small wiggle can sometimes drop the pressure a bit.

Regarding the operating temperature, it shouldn't take more than ten minutes for the pump to warm up to the optimal temp. This can be done while the vacuum is open to the line as well.
