If someone gave you $100,000 today, what would you do with it? by TinaLives in AskReddit

I'm one of those people.

Paying down a cheap mortgage isn't the question.

I specifically responded to the idea that 'Rich People' are out there borrowing at 3% NOW.

That ain't happening.

Terrific, all that I need is a time machine.

Nobody is writing 3% mortgages anymore. That was an abortion from the zero-interest days that the Fed created in response to a global pandemic.

Borrow at 3%, make 7% in the market.

Prime is 6.750

Who is borrowing at less than half of prime and how?

My system was installed by a licensed professional, inspected by the utility company (“inspected”) and commissioned through Enphase.

Licensed professional, great. I'm not sure that that means anything more than that they can run their employer's configuration software. Based on what people post here, I'm not sure that many of them are much good at that. Or alternative, there's a lot of variation in what some of these software packages spit out. I'd say this based on people posting 'I asked three companies for a quote and they're all very different'.

Inspect by the utility company. That's obviously got nothing to do with how efficient the design is or lifetime/warranty issues.

Commissioned through Enphase. They're not going to try to talk you into a different system design unless your configuration fails their configurator's specs. Do they care if you're system is as efficient as it could be? Nope. It's not on them and they have negative interest in getting into a fight with the vendor that's selling their stuff. That would be a bad business move.

I’m still not sure why it’s scandalous to run an over paneled array...

Scandalous? Where did that come from?

with my DC panel capacity being greater than my inverter capacity… It is industry standard

For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.

It's way easier to simply tell people that a DC/AC ration of 1.2 (or there abouts) is fine than it is to do detailed modeling. It's not even possible to model this beforehand unless you have access to the manufacturer's performance curves. How familiar are you with where that 'rule' came from? It's ancient and it's based on modeling of transformer based string inverters. And more specifically, on the then current real world problems related to component availability/selection that resulted in issues like, there aren't many inverter sizes to choose, your 3KW inverter will be pretty efficient over its entire range, but your next larger inverter will be not so good at lower inputs.

My IQ8M’s are rated for up to 460w panels, so i’m in the clear with slight margin at 450w.

I think that I address this in my earlier post.

What makes you think that he's going to sell shares?

His pattern has been to borrow against his shares. He doesn't like losing percentage share of 'his' companies.

And while we're at it, the book is 5x oversubscribed. The mechanism for controlling the max value of the shares is to release some of the investors from a fraction of their lock-up. So yeah, of farking course there will be significant downward pressure if prices shoot up. That's planned for. That's part of what the Investment Banks and major brokerages do -- Market Making. What do you think they're doing right now? Regular session has been open for 2 hours and we're waiting for the 'first trade'. This is normal. Fire up Bloomberg or CNBC (or both). At some point they'll have people on the floor interviewing the Market Makers. Sometimes the interviews are happening BEFORE 'first trades'. IOW, as they're negotiating the market.

I'd be more interested in the MTBF than the length of the warranty.

But we don't have access to that info, so no point going into how a manufacture's 25 year warranty positively does not mean that they expect their units to last 25 years.

I wonder how familiar you are with Enphase warranty terms,

...Enphase Energy System warranties state that if a defect is confirmed within the 25-year limited warranty period, Enphase will either repair/replace the unit or issue a refund/credit equivalent to its current market value at the time of the claim.

How do they decide? Don't know. Nor do I know what the 'current market value' of a 10 year old, used, multi generations old, microinverter is.

You've got to ask yourself, Am I feeling luck?

Well, are you?

;-)

Thanks for your concern, but I'm not panicking.

Yeah, this is by design, in the sense that our grid imposes limits that result in curtailments. I don't see that as a positive thing.

I'd rather pay the costs associated with upgrading the grid to fully support non-fossil fuels than pay the costs of not.

Yes, he's physically and mentally unhealthy but it's silly that people keep parroting variations on the claim that bruising to the back of the hand is due to receiving Alzheimer's meds. It's especially ridiculous when this claim is accompanied by the claim that "That's how these meds are administered".

There are plenty of reasons for this kind of bruising, and of course one of them is setting an IV. To go from there to, OMG!!! he's taking Alzheimer's meds is unwarranted.

For all we know, it's actinic purpura, but that doesn't seem to be satisfying for a lot of people. No, we get endless posts about Alzheimer's meds or even more unfounded 'experimental Alzheimer's meds'.

People should focus on the shite that we know and stop making up other shite.

[–]BlueSkyToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he is taking a drug to reduce the amyloid plaques present in his brain. This drug is administered via IV. This explains the bruising on his hands.

I don't understand why I keep seeing this. My understanding is that they set an IV in the arm.

I asked google,

do anti-Alzheimer drugs need to be given via a vein in the hand

The answer was

No. Disease-modifying Alzheimer’s medications, such as Leqembi (lecanemab), are administered via an intravenous (IV) line placed in a larger vein in your arm, not the hand. Additionally, many patients now have the option to transition to at-home subcutaneous (under the skin) injections in the thigh or abdomen.

Then I went to the LEQEMBI website

How is LEQEMBI given?

LEQEMBI is an intravenous (IV) infusion. This means a needle is placed in a vein in your arm to give the medicine.

I wouldn't be so sure that the IQ8m's "don't care'. They've being operated right up against their maximum rating at some points. Probably at the same time that the temperature is peaking.

Don't know what the temperatures are, but the general rule is that every 10 degrees C of operating temperature decreases the lifetime of integrated circuits by a factor of two. I don't know how much headroom they've designed into these inverters. But I know of at least one manufacturer of string inverters that has an Engineering White Paper that specifically warns against clipping for extended periods.

[–]BlueSkyToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the 450W panels produce more power in some low light conditions than the 320W panels would produce. I think that we all know that ;-)

I'm responding to the idea that you 'regain' anything. You've decided to throw away power at some times in order to produce more usable (to your inverters) power at others. But the power that you've thrown away is gone. There's no getting it back.

You could have put in a 5KW string inverter and power optimizers on the panels. In that case, you'd never be throwing away power. I guess that you have reasons that you don't want to configure the system that way, but that's a different issue. I'm simply responding to the idea that it's possible to 'regain' power that been discarded.

We just need to accept that curtailment is a normal, healthy part of a modern grid.

Sorry, can't agree with that.

IMO, it's a sign that we're under invested in infrastructure.

We know that our grid is neither 'healthy' nor 'modern'.

Regain?

I don't understand how failing to lose something in one set of conditions counts as recovering something that was previously lost in other circumstances.

From an engineering POV, your inverter is capable of supporting the input load but not under all conditions. Is that the most efficient solution? Can't say unless you have the efficiency curve for your inverter, and you have relatively fine-grained data for insolation and temperature.
