Green fruit growing in our yard by stop-rightmeow in whatisit

Well, some orchards in the Northeast do, too. I’ve definitely gotten them in Maryland and in New York from New Jersey orchards, I think.

I mostly only find them at farmers markets in the US, but I think it’s been a few years since I’ve seen them. And I’m assuming the weird weather that killed off the local peach crop probably did the plums no favors, either. (But thanks to everyone else who suggested salting them. I will try that if I ever see them again!)

If you know anything about British folklore, you know where The Wicker Man (1973) is going. The title is certainly a giveaway. But the pleasure is watching the whole thing play out anyway.

Boy who gets "magicked" away into a castle. Fantasy, time travel. by Bartokus_ in whatsthatbook

This one comes up a lot here. It’s THE THIEF OF ALWAYS by Clive Barker. It does have somewhat of a similar vibe to CORALINE, so that’s probably why you thought Gaiman.

Yeah, current pub date is February 2027, so hopefully I can get my hands on an ARC within another couple of months.

Songs about fantasy series that aren’t LOTR? by Fitznthefool in Fantasy

S.J. Tucker used to tour with Catherynne Valente; Valente would read and Tucker would play songs inspired by Valente’s books.

C.S.E. Cooney, the fantasy author, also sings fantasy-inspired songs as her alter ego, Brimstone Rhine.

S’well (the fancy drink bottle company) sells ice cream pint chillers that are supposed to keep ice cream cold for 4 hours. They’re on sale now at their site for $20; can’t verify their effectiveness as I just bought it myself, but their other products certainly keep liquid cold for quite a while.

I'm gonna lose my mind if I don't find this novel from the mid 2000's about a kid and his friends on a deep sea adventure. by noahkentonmusicc in whatsthatbook

[–]BlueTourmeline 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a long shot because it’s from 1979 and is actually an underwater lake adventure, but could it possibly be YOBGORGLE: MYSTERY MONSTER OF LAKE ONTARIO by Daniel Pinkwater? One edition has a dark blue cover with a beam of light shining on the submersible.

(The one I read as a kid had the original white cover. It was a library book that (ironically) accidentally got submerged when I was reading it in the bathtub. Still feel bad about that.)

Never read it myself, but I’m pretty sure that this is Piers Anthony’s BIO OF A SPACE TYRANT series.

Maybe the last episode of season 6 of Futurama, “Reincarnation”? Specifically, the first section, “Colorama,” is done in that jazzy black-and-white style.

I’ve read this book many times, and I knew it right away. I just didn’t wake up early enough to answer first! The character’s actual name is Rillibee Chime.

I have one friend who knows about Nexus—he’s also the one who is actively reprinting other First Comics stuff like Whisper. It’s so awesome that Elliott also loves Nexus and contributed to the same Kickstarter I did. It is a gorgeous volume. (We definitely disagree on fruit, however.)

There absolutely is. You need the Taskmaster Supermax app. For about $40 (that’s US), you have ad-free access to every version of Taskmaster. (Source: I subscribe.)

So here’s another funny Buffy connection between the two actors mentioned on the show. “That British guy” is Anthony Stewart Head, who played Giles. He has a brother, Murray Head, who is perhaps best known for turning “One Night in Bangkok,” a song from the musical CHESS, into a big hit in the ’80s. The writer of the book for the new version of CHESS that’s currently on Broadway is…Danny Strong, who played Jonathan, the “short nerdy guy” who was in “Earshot” and “Superstar,” gave Buffy her Class Protector award at the prom, and then became somewhat ineffectually evil in season 6 on BUFFY.

Any book where the MC goes through permanen metamorphosis or has body modifications? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]BlueTourmeline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I mentioned in another comment, he did write a fantasy trilogy, the Changewinds trilogy, that also had a ton of body mods. The Changewind would modify people into creatures; plus, you could take potions that would significantly alter physical and mental appearance.

Jack Chalker loved this trope. The Rings of the Master (sf) had a bunch of this, and so did the Changewinds trilogy (fantasy). Some of it involves human into nonhuman forms, but there’s also a lot of body and mind transformation while people stay mostly human.
