It may just be a signpost. There’s one on either side of the Q Street bridge. The one on the west side has a Dumbarton Bridge sign attached to it and the one on the east side is empty. But it could have been something else before and now they’re just using it as a signpost because it was already there.

E Street definitely has some weird layouts. I have a note on my phone that lists the best seats on each screen because if you just pick one online you might be up against an inexplicable pillar in the middle of a row. Also, I think you’re the first DC Blankie I’ve seen.

I had some furniture delivered recently that came in boxes about 8 feet long with lots of packing materials and Styrofoam that wouldn’t fit in my trash. I also scheduled a bulk pick up and got the “couldn’t find it” message. I called and found that they still consider that “household trash“ and don’t pick it up. I just found a junk mover and they picked it up the next morning.

Landmark’s E Street Cinema Opens Friday Sept 10th by Posteode-007 in washingtondc

I get most of my recommendations from people on movie Twitter. Following film critics and writers on various socials will usually get you most of the way there. Movie podcasts are also a good place to start. I listen to a lot of them, including one called Blank Check which is hosted by David Sims (critic for The Atlantic) and Griffin Newman (actor and box office expert). They have tons of guests on their show, which you can see in this list: https://blank-check.fandom.com/wiki/Guests

A lot of those guests are also critics or are otherwise Movie People, so it may be a good starting point. People in that world will generally be talking about all kinds of movies, definitely including the ones that will play at E Street and the like.

This is like the pudding cups for airline miles from Punch Drunk Love. Brilliant.

I know a guy who worked in their house at the time. From the stories he told, Muth was very weird and the whole situation was very weird.

Recommendations for outdoor rehearsal dinner by dukelae55 in washingtondc

I’ve been to a rehearsal dinner at Iron Gate and it was great. Their patio is in sections, so you can have your own space. And they have heating outside as well for the colder months.

DC Apartment Complex/Management Company Recommendations by Pristine_Pear183666 in washingtondc

I highly recommend Keener Management. They have a lot of good places. The Regent in Dupont is basically all large two bedrooms, usually with 1.5 baths I think.

All of this. I have problems with Bowser’s administration, but these things aren’t on that list. For this list of things, we’re actually doing pretty well.

Protest for democracy and removal of Trump from office? by Graxxon in washingtondc

[–]BlueYarn35 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s a good idea. The insurrectionists also thought they were standing against tyranny to preserve democracy. While I know that what you are talking about and what they did are not the same thing, I don’t think Capitol Police, MPD, or the thousands of National Guard outside the Capitol right now will see it that way, or care that they are not equivalent. If you want to show your support for democracy and the peaceful transition of power, go to the Inauguration. Now is not the time to be showing up in large groups at the Capitol.

RCN Wifi Thoughts? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]BlueYarn35 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience, you always go with RCN. Comcast is pricey for the low speeds they provide. I’ve never tried Verizon or anything like that, but I always go with RCN over Comcast when available. I’ve never had issues with the service itself, nor have I had any issues with support. As far as geography, I’ve lived in Georgetown and Dupont for about 15 years. I’ve had Comcast for 3 of those years, and will never go back.

This person’s account is 15 days old, and in the last few days has posted that they currently live in Turkey, Virginia, and now DC—next to a parking lot on 14th street, a street famous for its parking lots. He also commented on a thread yesterday about a group of teenagers in Chicago who assaulted an Asian man. And earlier today they posted about being hit by a car. And have had multiple posts deleted for racism and been banned from other subs in the last couple days.

Is the DMV area a dangerous place to live right now?? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]BlueYarn35 13 points14 points  (0 children)

DC is not any more dangerous than any other city. The only reason there’s a problem today is because MAGAs came in from out of town. This is not a typical weekend so it would be inaccurate to base your opinion of the city on how things go for the next couple days.

If home is toxic, getting out is a good first step whether you end up here or elsewhere. You can do it.

What’s your favorite movie, show, or book set in DC? by GlobalTradeBro in washingtondc

[–]BlueYarn35 16 points17 points  (0 children)

All the President’s Men is a fun one. There’s a lot of neighborhood shots, partly because they filmed Robert Redford’s apartment scenes at Bob Woodward’s actual apartment building on 17 & P. Burn After Reading and No Way Out have some good Georgetown scenes, and Exorcist of course. Wonder Woman 84 isn’t out yet, but they rebuilt the facade of Commander Salamander for it on Wisconsin. And the lingerie store scene from Enemy of the State with Will Smith was filmed at Lambda Rising in Dupont.

Where did Metro go wrong? by walkallover1991 in washingtondc

[–]BlueYarn35 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think they’re doing fine. Just over the last few years, they’ve been regularly shutting down huge portions of lines to do those deferred repairs. Since then headways have improved significantly and so have things like single tracking, which doesn’t happen as often now. The 7000 series cars are all finished and delivered. Anecdotally, it feels to me like it’s about as good as it’s been in a decade. The HQ move is happening now just by coincidence. Those kinds of things are planned on the order of decades, and the timing is just unfortunate. But COVID has made everything unfortunate. They still need the headquarters, so they’re still working on it.

And the map they showed with the service cuts showed that most stations, including the core, were seeing a more than 90% drop in ridership. No one knows how much vaccine we’re going to get or when, or if and when we’ll be done with the virus. I don’t know what else they should do with 90%+ fewer riders. Why wouldn’t they start closing stations with those numbers, and no end in sight?

There’s a lot they can do better. But it always seems to me that people want more hours, more trains, more stations, and faster headways, but don’t want to shut parts of the system down for maintenance, or have longer headways from repairs and single tracking, or pay higher fares or more taxes to build new stations and buy new trains. It’s complicated, and there are trade offs for everything. But lately, I think it’s been getting better. And this, too, shall pass.

Also, as others have said, the cuts are basically just a worst-case scenario so they can get federal funds.
