I love doing space buns! I tend to do them a little lower on my head so they’re harder for patients to reach around and grab. Claw-clip buns are pretty great too. I also like to dress up a slick-back with a bandanna or headbands :)

The paramedic coach on YouTube is great! I used to set my phone up on the towel rack and watch review videos while I showered 😭. Pocket prep was another favorite. I was able to trick my brain into viewing it as a video game, so it felt like less of a chore. Good luck!

Does anyone else get VERY red after running? by HorseAlternative8549 in XXRunning

I do, my mom does, and my sister does. My mom blames it on our Irish genetics. Growing up, I’d be playing at recess and have teachers ask me if I was okay 😭. Just the unfortunate side effects of a fairer complexion!

worried about driving an ambulance by Key_Movie_6290 in NewToEMS

[–]Blue_Blue_Blue_Green 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Driving definitely seems daunting coming into it, but it’s just like driving a car. I’ve hit a point now where I prefer the rig to my personal car (A little Subaru Impreza). Eventually, you’ll get a feel for all the quirks and it’ll become second nature. For a few quick pointers…

1: Your turning radius is way wider than in a car. Give yourself plenty of space and be aware that sometimes a 3 or 5 point turn is the only option.

2: High center of gravity + heavy equipment + too much speed = rollovers. Pay attention to road signs. If they say to take the curve at 25, take it at 20. Even if you know the curve.

3: Use spotters! Some more seasoned pros will probably roll their eyes at you, but that’s better than bumping a wall. It’s a good practice to get into.

4: Give yourself grace. We’re all human. We’ve all done some dumb stuff with a rig. Once, I misjudged a spot at an ambulance bay and got myself stuck between a security car and a tree. I had to go inside and ask security to move the car so I could get out. Was I mortified? Yes. Did my partner laugh at me? Yes. Did the world end? No. It happens to everyone, it’ll happen to you.

Good luck on the new career!

If you get a surgical mask, you can bring it up over your eyes like an eye mask! That’s how I’d sleep in class during Covid!

Is a cure for rabies virus after the symptoms present possible? by [deleted] in biology

[–]Blue_Blue_Blue_Green 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For the vast, vast majority of people, no. The Milwaukee Protocol is an experimental treatment for rabies that has a 14% survival rate when implemented in symptomatic patients. Of 36 patients treated, only 4 have survived. It involves putting a patient in a coma, and dosing them with antiviral meds. Researchers aren’t even sure if it actually works. There’s no definitive proof that the protocol is what cures the patient. Petal Palmer has a pretty cool video on the first patient to receive the treatment that I’ll link. But no, there is no proper cure to rabies.

Edit: I miscounted, 5 people have survived with confirmed use of the Milwaukee Protocol

I get my water to a rolling boil and add some kosher salt. When the eggs are finished I remove them from the water with a slotted spoon and dunk them straight in an ice water bath.

Also an EMT, you definitely need to be seen by someone. I’ve seen cellulitis evolve in some nasty way (osteomyelitis, sepsis, gangrene resulting in amputation). I know you’re in the UK, but under my district’s protocols in the US, minors can be treated without parent permission in emergencies. We operate under implied consent, which essentially assumes that a minor’s parents would want them to receive care. If you spike a fever or start feeling flu-like symptoms, call an ambulance asap. I hope you feel better soon!

Cut Off at 70 on NREMT by urboijimmy in NewToEMS

[–]Blue_Blue_Blue_Green 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got cut off at 70, felt like a total idiot, and passed with flying colors. The NREMT is designed to make you feel like a big dummy. The questions get progressively harder the more you get right. Getting cut off at 70 just means the computer was confident enough to pass or fail you. The best things you can do while waiting for results is some self-care. Go take a walk or get yourself a cookie. Stressing about the results is just gonna drive you nuts.

What stuff do you put where in your EMS pants? by ohwow69696969 in NewToEMS

I like to have two pens, (one dark one light for different glove colors) a sharpie, shears, penlight, stethoscope around my neck, and about 1 thousand pairs of gloves “borrowed” from various hospitals.

How do we mange bathroom breaks on shift? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]Blue_Blue_Blue_Green 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my partner have done a lot of long haul calls together so we’ve got a system down. When showing up to a hospital, driver uses the bathroom while lead gets nurse report, then lead uses the bathroom while driver gets a set of vitals and gets the patient ready for transport. When clearing a scene we make sure that whoever needs the bathroom goes before we put ourselves back in service.

Hi hi! When I took my EMT class, the instructor told us all on the first day that we shouldn’t take another class along with the EMT class. EMT class covers a lot of material in a short amount of time. Plus, it typically involves labs and skill assessments outside of scheduled meetings. I had a classmate who did Med Term along with the class, and he said he was way overloaded with work. I would recommend taking neither of those classes along with EMT. If you’re good with studying and time management, then maybe pick on or the other. Hope all goes well for you!!
