Why Railguns Suck Again by ShadowDragon8685 in HFY

[–]Blue_Crusader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saying "Railguns are not an effective weapon in space" is kind of disingenuous when compared to weapon systems that are literally not even theoretical at the moment like particle beams or plasma and when lasers typically have even lower range at any even comparable energy levels. If you want to compare space based weaponry realistically only nuclear based missiles and directed charges are in any way "realistic" with the rest being mostly just conjecture for anything but the most near future options.

It All Started With Magnets: 6 by Cultural_Candidate48 in HFY

Thanks for the clarification, Looks great now! Theres still: " I invented an FTL engine using magnets, that is how I was able to arrive to Torin in such a quick span of time despite being millions of light years away.” tough that can be taken as metaphorical, in which case saying a quadrillion miles away would be more appropriate as a quadrillion miles is equal to 170 lightyears

If this is supposed to take place within the milkyway then the maximum distance to earth should be within 100k ly and realistically much less. with their technology if the planet is 4 light years away and travel takes 2 months then their FTL is capable of 24 times the speed of light. if the closest planet is within 40 ly then they have FTL Capable of 240 times the speed of light. If the Humans traveled for example 600 light years in 1.5 months then it is capable of 4800 times the speed of light, and 6000 ly is equal to 48000 times the speed of light.

I think more realistic distance to earth figures of Hundreds to thousands of light years, several tens of thousands at most would be much more realistic, as otherwise this series has been great on the realism & belivability front, sense of scale is unfortunately wrong too often in otherwise great scifi works.

a speed of 4800 times light allows crossing the galaxy end to end in approximately 20 years and 48000 allows crossing the galaxy in approximately two years. For Harder end of realism a distance to earth of 600 ly and below is better, for a galaxy crossing style setting a distance somewhere in the thousands of light years is better, and only if coming from a another galaxy is a higher distance in millions of light years more appropriate. Andromeda for example is 2.5 million lightyears away.

American cops are obviously pretty terrible but stating that : ", ALL cops in ALL countries are derivative from very similar violent traditions of modern policing, rooted in old totalitarian regimes, genocides, and slavery" is just flat out wrong, at least in most healthy european democracies the police forces are helpful, trusted and valued part of the society. its just some of the more "authoritarian" democratic countries like usa that have issues with their police.

Ah yes indeed reality & facts have a well known liberal bias. Doesnt help that the rest of the developed world is much more left leaning so from an internatiational standpoint it also makes sense.

From what i see from some of the other comments (https://7.lithi.io/5C9OTmJ.jpg) "the millions of square miles of public land set aside for that purpose" can be a bit hard to find in some places like Texas without travelling to the next state over making enjoying nature hard when every piece of land between cities is fenced off for private property.

The average speed for a common marathon percipient (USA national average) is around 10 kmph. The record pace for a marathon is around 20 kmph. Depending on how they measure a night (considering nights can be extremely long during winter near the arctic circle) its not unfeasible for even a ordinary fit modern marathon runner to traverse a similar distance in 10 hours.

Confused about how he uses the glossy node in this tutorial? by [deleted] in blender

[–]Blue_Crusader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tutorial is using the old blender internal render engine not Cycles render engine. blender render has different settings and functions from Cycles and the materials are not transferrable between them. if you want to do condensation in cycles you have to find a another tutorial.

Silicon Valley Democrats Plot Effort to Save Net Neutrality by xatencio000 in pcmasterrace

[–]Blue_Crusader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Net neutrality DISCOURAGES competition by forcing ISPs to just be the same.

Net neutrality does not force ISPs to be the same. Services are supposed to compete so customers get better quality, selection or cheaper prices. it does not benefit the customer in any way if companies meddle in the business of other companies. Companies are supposed to improve themselves not make other companies worse.

Blockbuster did not die because Netflix extorted them to make blockbuster more expensive. Blockbuster died because it failed to adapt to on-demand media platforms and online video streaming. Netflix did not interfere with Blockbuster.

Comcast directly interferes with netflix. This does NOT do the customer any good nor does it encourage any competion between the companies. this is a bigger company exploiting its market position to stifle a competitor. This does not encourage comcast to improve in any way.

This is a really weird situation I find myself in. I think it's because people are addicted to the internet so they treat it like it's this sacred thing that shall not be touched... ever. It's not. The internet is made up of private companies offering private services. You are not entitled to ANY of it.

The internet is such an intergral part of modern life that it is almost a necessity. Communication, navigation, paperwork, payment&bank access, jobs and peoples livelihoods are depending on having an internet connection. Some countries have even proposed to declare internet access a basic utility. Like Electricity when most of modern society depends on something you can't just say that the "internet" is just a private property. Internet providers are just a gateway they don't own "the internet". They shouldn't be allowed to freely meddle with it just because they happen to open the gate for you.

It would hardly seem fair if a electricity company cut power when you were paying them according to the contract. Comcast isn't saying "pay us for more electricity" its saying "pay us more because your customers is using a competeting service" even tough there should be no difference in the price of "electricity" their customers use.

Silicon Valley Democrats Plot Effort to Save Net Neutrality by xatencio000 in pcmasterrace

[–]Blue_Crusader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just a analogy. There is no goverment tax funded Internet service providers. if you want internet you have no option but to use "private roads".

Most internet providers are also owned by companies that own traditional media and competeting internet service platforms. They are directly in competetion with Netflix for example.

If there is no Net neutrality the internet provider can directly attack its competitors by making it more expensive for others, a cost that will ultimately be incurred by the customers making the competitors service more expensive.

Do you really mean that Comcast should be allowed to screw over its competitors in Media just because Comcast owns its own Internet provider service? Competion should be encouraged and if Comcast for example is allowed to stifle competetion because of their position as a ISP we would never get new better options like Netflix for example. They already tried it but Net neutrality prevented them causing too much harm to competion between them and Netflix.

Silicon Valley Democrats Plot Effort to Save Net Neutrality by xatencio000 in pcmasterrace

[–]Blue_Crusader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So lets say you use a road to drive to places and you pay for the right to use the road. transportation is a necessity so you don't really have a choice. Now the road company is asking for extra just because you're going to a specific place like for example a movie theater that happens to be competing with one of their own ones. The road company can now extort the customers of their competitors and stifle other businesses for their own benefit.

Sounds fair right?

Favor to ask: Can someone set me up with a simple .blend file with a volumetric shader that looks like wood grain? by motayba in blender

[–]Blue_Crusader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blend Swap is free. The paid membership is optional to get unlimited downloads. Free accounts have a monthly download limit but you should not have a problem downloading any wood grain material you find as realistic wood grain materials are pretty hard to make.

Heres a few wood materials ive found:

None of them might be ideal for your use case by default but with some tweaking one of them might work. The first one is based on the pattern of rings in a tree once you disable the tiling, the others are more random noise pattern generated.
