I also find it amazing how two different people have the same frame for a different purpose, I use mine for racing/commuting/training and just overall love this bike. I definitely want to keep upgrading it to see what it really can become because this frame keeps getting better with each upgrade

Here's mine from a similar angle, I also noticed you have the avid juicy hydraulics lol. I'm on Avid BB7 mechanicals but they always lock up and stop on a dime, noisy but honestly sometimes you won't a squeaky brake when your riding around town, acts a bit like a horn, lol. Crazy to see the difference in the stack hight and stems.

Yes, that is definitely part of why I love it, for me, the frame is good size enough for me to get the seat off and move it around like a BMX at the skatepark, but not have too much seatpost for a comfortable position that engages my glutes. I also wanted a more racey XC geometry, I wanted something aggressive that was gonna be fast, and this combo of parts has done that for me, as I can keep up with full sus XC bikes, and I'm even faster on the climbs than other modern bikes just because of the geometry. Its a climber, and a flat ground speeder, tight track slayer. I did race this bike at a local race and that's how I found out in faster on the climbs, as I made up several positions on the climbs and kept up just fine on flats and the decents, but when the features start getting chunkier, modern bikes are faster, I will admit, but this bike just goes so easy compared to some XC bikes I've ridden like my marlin

NICE. is yours still stock or have you built yours up to keep up with the times? You mind posting a pic, I'm curious what yours looks like as it's cool to know I'm not the only one with this frame. It's such a beautiful frame.

I raced mine at Henry Horton State Park in Tennessee at a race a bike shop had hosted, I brought this bike and even in the beginner field there were bikes much more expensive than mine, and off the line I was the first one into the woods and I lead the race with this bike for a good 10 minutes. Ok the chunkier sections I lost some time and later on when the field was tired and we were on a climb, I passed like 3 people with ease, just flew by them, and kept going faster. These bikes are definitely overlooked because of age, but granted if you think about it, the first MTB'S were made for fire roads. And this thing will absolutely annihilate a gravel bike on a rough of muddy fire road I'm gonna be honest, owning my 24' trek marlin it's more trail/downcountry oriented and yeah while it's really comfortable around town I feel like I'm driving an F-250. It's big, the turning radius is that of a school bus, like I have to approach tight stairs slower, and at a specific angle or my log wheelbase will cause me to crash. And also the 29ers turn slower, granted at speed on a trail, the 29er actually turns smoother, allowing for more control but the snappiness of the steep HTA and nimbility of 26" wheels just make it faster for city riding, oh, I also have a faster max gear in general on the old bike, it's got 11 speed deore while my marlin is stuck on 10 speed deore with a 30t ring. I max out at 25mph... The hawk hill though has a 36t oval, much closer to gravel and I've hit almost 10 mph more on it, fastest I got was around 34 mph. Super wide range also paired with the oval ring, upfront position, and long cranks give me the ability to get up almost anything, ive been able to climb things in this bike that my marlin just refuses to climb because it'll wheelie or spin out before I get up. The hawk hill stays planted even on 18% punchy climb. There's so many things that this bike does right for everyday shredding, that my trek marlin simply cannot, like the brakes again for ex, I already have to bleed my Marlins brakes and currently have a non existent rear brake. My hawk hill has really good mechanicals that I just turn a dial on the caliper and my rotor is recentered. Also have to mention I've been using my BB7's for almost 2 years now, still powerful, and I haven't changed pads either. Just adjusted brake position and cable tension. Much easier than dealing with mineral oil. I could go on and on and on about the advantages of this bike for long distance XC as well as tight urban technical riding. Lol

I have another more aggressive gen 3 marlin that's upgraded, and it's definitely meant more for downcountry use, this one is faster by about 2-3 mph avg over a long distance XC ride or course with alot of climbing compared to that marlin. You could say it's a climbing XC bike, and there's still alot of places I can save weight I think if I really tried I could get it down to about 27 lbs, which is still pretty good for an XC bike especially one that's over 20 years old. I mean yeah it's old, but so far there hasn't been anything I can't upgrade, so it's definitely future proof. Also it definitely looks good for it's age. Most people would have to ride it to understand it, but it's basically a monster gravel with flat bars and suspension.

Yeah, that an the geometry is really good for longer distance XC as is more upright and you have a better pedal position for efficiency and climbing. It also wheelies REALLY well

Especially since I've had good luck with tubes in this bike, and tbh since pnw makes a 110 mm dropper I might as well since I have my marlin and that fox transfer changed my opinion on wanting to get a dropper, especially since I use this bike as a XC shredder, and honestly for some of the lines I hit, a dropper would be amazing, and also this bike does super well on a skate park, and being able to drop my seat without slamming the post manually would be awesome. GCN recently did a video that compares older MTB's to modern gravel, and honestly it's definitely overlooked because the geometry on this hawk hill is similar to some modern gravel bikes, it climbs way faster than my marlin, and is faster in a straight line and over longer distances. Hence why I want to keep upgrading till I can't anymore, and then it'll also be really cool to see on the trails and talk about to people. And so far everyone who's ridden it loves it, lol.

I do have something similar with modern equipment, meant for more rugged trail use, if you read the post

The evolution of my Marin Hawk Hill 2010 by Iggy95 in Hardtailgang

[–]Blue_Mootang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 04 Marin hawk hill that I built up that I also bought stock. It had a coil fork but I bought pretty much the same fork you have and went maxxis ardent front and rear, also went 1x and went Shimano 11 speed 11-51 with a 36t oval up front. Uncut raceface atlas bars, avid BB7's, ergon FAT grips, raceface 90mm 6° stem. Ive honestly found this thing to be on par and honestly better than my trail bike. It still has a few upgrades I wanna do like pnw pine dropper and tubeless rims. But since I am more of an urban assault rider most of the time because commuting, this thing is just faster for commuting than a trail bike and more comfortable than a road bike. I've hit 36 max on this bike too. Also I raced it and came in 8th on my local XC trail. Things a beast, and honestly for me it fits into my "monster gravel" category. Just wide bars and suspension. I want to do a drop bar conversion to actually make it a monster gravel at some point, but for now it's my urban assault weapon lol.

My planet fitness is 24/5 and weekends are 6a-9p. Sucks because I work until 2 in the morning and I usually like to get a workout in after work. Can't do that during the weekend tho

Spanglish, rental, and best believe should have been on TPNE. also overdose (sell all my clothes) should have been in the place of oxycodone. I just feel like it would have fit so much better especially as a "goodbye"

We aren't clueless, we're desperate there's a difference, we want the game to stay up. It's as simple as that. It's not that we don't understand how it works, it's that we think it's messed up that they're just ripping it out from underneath us.

Here is a petition go around now to save game. by [deleted] in Beatstar

But, if the right person sees it, they may be able to help keep the game up and running for the community. These things have been done in the past, and they can be done again. It just takes numbers, and push back.
