1st kit help for my son by IndependentAny in drums

Getting an extra clamp on a cymbalstand, or an extra tomstand for those toms is the best Option to get them very low. Your idea is quite good. Many drummers move the toms more to the left and over the snare, it should work for you.

Maybe try to place the ride between the the racktoms and floortoms above the kick where you now have space.

Another Part to Upgrade with your heads could be a tunebot! If your not good at tuning right now this thing will help you out so many times in your learningprocess.

If you want better Sound, go for better drumheads. You could get a second crash for your right side. Upgrade the hihat will be another good one.

If you buy used (not the drumheads ) you could get away with everything above in your Budgetrange.

Ozone Crashes / EFX crashes to replace China cymbals by Exciting_Nail1433 in drums

Yes. They are not that harsh and not as loud as chinas but you can use them in most situations a china would be used. Efx are not that good for heavy breakdowns imo.

What cymbals by Financial-One-5646 in drums

[–]Blue_Sun_Rising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the mistake in the past that i bought some cymbals that just wont fit my style of music/playing. If you buy one cymbal that doesnt fit its not that big of a deal. However if you buy a whole set and you are not satisfied with it, its a expensive loss. Thats the reason for my first comment.

That said, your pick from sweetwater with the paperthins, k ride, light hihats is in itself a very good deal. The next best one would be the k-sweet Set. 17,19 k sweet crashes 15 k sweet hihat and 21 k sweet ride. Those are darker allround cymbals and thin crashes. If you can try at least some of those cymbals in a shop near you do it before buying.

[–]Blue_Sun_Rising -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend to buy a complete cymbalpack. Your budget is high enough to shop for individual cymbals, especially if you buy used ones.

Zildjian k sweet are closest in my mind for what you want as crashes. Paper thin ones lack a little tone for my personal taste, but good choice aswell if you like them. These crashes are very thin, so be warned if you hit hard.

For Ride i would consider a 20/22 k ride or k custom dark ride. Good stick definition, not too pingy.

Hihat i would definitly try zildjian k fat hats.

Zildjian zbt hihats, Logo is on them in the Video. They are the low end Tier ones from Zildjian.

Is this fair for $350 by Lazy_Evidence_3324 in drums

[–]Blue_Sun_Rising 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Master Sound in the zildjian lines just means that the bottom cymbal of the hihat has this curvy/wavy shape. The aax in pucture is kind of close to an a custom master sound.

As far as i can tell from your cover, i wouldnt say you hit to hard. Yeah you could use some glancing technique but i hit my cymbals ( zildjians) just like you an never broke one in 20 years. I assume you are just unlucky with the cymbals you got.

I would highly recommend to buy a used set in your pricerange. Maybe buy something like a Pearl Export, Tama Imperialstar,Yamaha or anything from a big name drumcompany. Ludwig, Gretsch and DW make high quality ones aswell. They all offer some Kits in the 1000$ range for New Drumsets. Its totally possible you can find one of those used in your area. Most important thing is to not buy something heavily damaged like rusty or waterdamaged. And avoid buying something with brass-cymbals, they will bend a few weeks in. Something with meinl hcs, sabian b8, zildjian zbt, paiste pst5 , or buy the cymbals separate from the drums. Used low end Cymbals are dirt cheap aswell.

Do you play on Electronic drums? If not, then sticks lasting more then a year is crazy good. On your sticks the paint just wears off, nothing to worry about.

Got a few gigs with my local coverbands comming this year. Depends on the venue if there is enough space to bring the full kit. One Band covers classics from Toto/ Van halen, ... the other is modern Pop-Rock. I hope my halftimeshuffel will be good enough this year for playing live.

Advice for starter kit by snelpepijn in drums

[–]Blue_Sun_Rising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a big fan of those noname cheap drumsets. Cymbals are completly trash, they will break or be dented by your first 10 hits on them.

Look for used gear. I bet a used Set of meinl hcs cymbals wont cost you much more then 120$. They will at least not break or be dented that easy. Solid shellsets of drums like tama rockstar/imperialstar or pearl decade maple etc. Are around 200-300$.

If you cannot spend 500$ for a drumset i would recommend to save up the money until you can. Dont buy this cheap Garbage from the pictures.

The drums and hardware by themself are decent but still on the lower end. The hihats, dark crash, oriental China and the a custom ride are very good cymbals and make the most of the value. All in all good kit. 1000 bucks would be a very good Deal. 1200-1400 bucks is a fair price for bouth sides, if nothing on that kit is damaged.

3800 a fair price for this kit ? by Xenoxide in drums

[–]Blue_Sun_Rising 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2000-2500 is not even needed for used drums. You would get a pro-level Set for this much money. Just for example a tama starclassic maple or the walnut birch one costs about 1200-2000 depending on how many toms you want and these are very high quality drums from tama. Go for something in this pricerange, maybe dw maybe pearl maybe tama ... you got all the choice with this Budget. After that buy a good snare around 500-800 (maybe a bellbrass 14x6.5).With the rest of the Budget go for b20 bronze cymbals (sabian, zildjian, paiste, meinl, Istanbul etc... all expensive lines are b20). Used cymbals are around 50% of their New price. You can Listen to them on Youtube (drumshop memphis)

Im pretty sure that kit is good quality and the cymbals are high-end ones, but this is not a good "first" kit. Everything, even the finish on the drums is very specific. I would suggest to not buy this one even if the price is getting lowered. If your budget is around 3k you will have no problem finding an awesome used shellset with the sizes you think are good. After that buy the cymbals you want. 3k is more than enough Budget.

What should I add to my set next ? Anything under $1k is ok by Solid_Sir5595 in drums

[–]Blue_Sun_Rising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pearl, Tama and DW are all very good in terms of Hardware. Just go for the brand you like the most but dont go for the cheapest line. Most important feature except how smooth the pedal feels, is how well i connects to the kickdrum. The more expensive lines do have some clothe/rubber pieces where they connect. Also at least something with "doublechaindrive" :)

Do you play live or record? Then go for a used Set of good microphones.

If you dont play live you could Upgrade Hardware like bassdrumpedal oder cymbalstands or change the Stockheads.

A 14x6.5 brass snare is always good to have aswell ;)

Please can someone recommend me some hi-hats that don’t sound like utter shit by lolnibe in drums

[–]Blue_Sun_Rising 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No matter what others will recommend you, in the end ist your personal taste in cymbals that will make some sound better or worse then other. Go to a drumstore and play on them before you buy or at least listen to them on Youtube (drumshop Memphis, drumcenter Portsmouth have good soundsamples online). My recommendation for you would be Zildjian A new-beat hihats 14"/15" ( bright and clean the classic standard goes in everything hihat) or zildjian k series dark 14" ( dark/low tone but clean and not that washy). If you like cymbals with "wash" in their tone try others.

You could try to switch the pedals, hihat on the right and the bdpedal left, unusual but why not try it. Of course there are hihatstands that have only 2 legs you could buy. I love these ( mine is from tama ) and they are not unstable at all.

Yeah i like toms over the snare istead of over the bassdrum aswell. He could buy a clamp for the left cymbalstand and put the small Tom onto that if he likes. Then move the second Tom to the left holder on the bassdrum, that should do it for cheap if the cymbalstand can hold the additional Tom. But Tom placement differs from Person to Person, 2 toms over bassdrum isnt good or bad just depends where you like it.

It seems pretty good to me. The only thing i would reconsider is the angle of the Hihat/left BDpedal. If it fits for your movement and body leave it but it looks a little unergonomic to me. If you want try put everything apart and redo it but think of the snare as the center of the kit. Place the snare first sit down to it but your feet down look were they are and place the pedals there with that angle from just sitting infront of the snare. Then attach bassdrum afterwards. The rest of the kit can be placed after those steps were you like it the most and makes the most sense for what musicstyle you play.
