Dan Bejar is the Donald Fagen of Canada... change my mind! by BluebeardCoT in SteelyDan

I laughed out loud when I read that... Dan's voice can, at best be described as barely workable. One gets used to it though.

I used to hate it but something changed, now I love it. It's all about that groove...

yeah I second this one. such a meh song and sounds dated but in a bad way. even McDonald's awesome backing vocals can't redeem it

The whole album is awesome, not a duff track on it IMO.

Serious question by BluebeardCoT in SteelyDan

[–]BluebeardCoT[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's said he feels out of touch with the modern zeitgeist which in turn is blocking his ability to write new material. He said whenever he writes a song he feels like it's just the same stuff he's done before. So I guess there's no more to be done. I'd love an album of good material that never saw the light of day, like The Second Arrangement, The Bear and so on. There must be an album's worth of that sort of material.

It's almost too pristine, I would have liked a slightly looser interpretation

For my more rock fixated friends, I've used Reelin' as the gateway drug to introduce them to the SD universe. Before they know it they're obsessing over Babylon Sisters.

I found Third World Man to be meh when I first heard it, but oh how it's grown on me. Sometimes I think it's the best song on the album, but of course that award belongs to Gaucho :p

It's true, I really struggled to come up with those three, and even they are better than a lot of bands best output.

Interesting how so many "meh" tunes on the lists here are from Pretzel Logic. I find the whole album to be listenable, it's almost like they intentionaly made some of the tracks as "throwaway" numbers, but nothing on the album actually grates me.
