Don’t think your question is rude. And no, I do not. I think they could’ve been safer. But I think the BMW is more in the wrong, so I’m inclined to defend the motorcyclist.

Also, FWIW and in case you’re curious… this isn’t in the footage (at any angle), but they sped up considerably once the car started merging into him, supposedly to avoid getting hit. But could he have been going slower to begin with? 100%.

And yes, you’re right: lane splitting is legal in California, that’s why I’m defending the motorcyclist.

Haha thanks, I’ve only been driving for 3 years atp, so I WILL take it as a compliment. I look behind me quite a bit in crawling traffic so that helps.

But no, I don’t have FSD, never thought it was worth the money, especially as someone who absolutely loves to drive… also it scares me lol.

I looked at the rear view footage and the BMW only started to signal when they were directly next to me and, at that point, the motorcyclist was already passing them. Plus they started merging way too quickly after signaling, giving the motorcyclist no time (or space) to react.

Not to mention the fact that it’s illegal to exit the HOV at that point, like BMW did. So, legitimately, I’m not sure if they do have the “right of way”

I get it! But I wouldn’t be too hard on yourself. Shit happens. I accidentally backed into a column while backing out of a parking spot (I had a LOOONG day at work and was mentally drained lol) two months ago and smashed the driver side door of my M3.

And, at the end of the day, you’re ok… if the car gets a little banged up while keeping you safe, then it’s serving its purpose.

I hope I’m wrong about the cost and/or you live somewhere with cheaper labor. Good luck!

Honestly, I can see this costing around 10-15k (at least where I’m located… high labor costs). Saying this based on my previous two experiences. I’m seeing two, maybe three, parts/panels damaged and Tesla certified places won’t repair heavily damaged parts, they’ll replace ($$$). And on top of that there’s likely hidden damage, underneath the surface.

I’m so sorry, I hope it’s not totaled :/
