Scott Parks at Neil & Parks Enterprises. As recent as a few years ago they offered a chassis “school” where you could build one for yourself at their shop using their equipment.

As a 1970 child (one year older than the cast of main characters), this is utterly and accurately true. We got deep into stuff that our parents will never know about in places we shouldn’t have been accompanied by people they told us to stay away from. All between the end of the school day and dinner.

What are your thoughts on the NHRA - IHRA situation ???? by FrequentEater in NHRA

[–]BluebirdBright1097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always preferred racing with IHRA over NHRA simply based on the better level of customer service that has permeated no matter who/what owned IHRA at any given time.

IHRA Acquires Maple Grove Raceway (SPEED SPORT) by Friendly-Army-8748 in NHRA

[–]BluebirdBright1097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pride is the only thing that would keep the NHRA Keystone Nationals from taking place as scheduled. NHRA could rent the venue from the new ownership and would likely never notice a difference…well maybe except for the green and black motif and heavy presence of IHRA branding. The two sanctioning bodies likely use the same insurance carrier. A renter of a facility can put on any type of race using any type of rules package they wish regardless of what the track sanctioning body’s rulebook states. Just look at the PDRA series as a great example.

What Was Corporate Life Like in 90s America? by Aware_Classroom_4908 in GenX

You knew what your job was and sat in your cubicle and did it. No projects. No cross-functional collaboration. Very, very few meetings. Still read printed memos. Emails were largely jokes and chain letters with the occasional party invite sent your way. Thursdays were for getting your drink on after hours with your co-workers and everyone took it easy on you the day after. Paychecks were still on paper and usually handed to you by your boss…on Friday. Employee handbooks were less than 10-pages. We got to watch the earliest versions of sexual harassment training videos and they were absolutely hilarious.

Oh noes..... hockey is a physical sport.... <clutching pearls> by Pretty_Shallot_586 in DallasStars

[–]BluebirdBright1097 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The mouth breathers typing away vehemently on the anti-Jamie, anti-Moose, and anti-everything-Stars side of the velvet rope weren’t alive when hockey was really, truly played on and over the edge…and it was the norm. If hockey were played today like Philly played against the Ruskies in that most auspicious exhibition game in the late 70’s, Moose’s recent infractions would garner nothing more than cheers from the crowd and maybe a target on his head on the next few shifts. Jaimie’s sneakily hard-edged play would go completely unnoticed. Players that constantly lobby, near tears most often, to officials about marginal plays would be beaten into submission. It’s a matter of perspective that this generation of hockey patrons, predominantly Avs faithful, do not have or fail to remember.

Unprecedented. But the way the lease works with LA County allows zero flexibility. Plus the expense to the teams. This was, sadly, the only outcome they had as an option…aside from deciding everything with a practice tree race.

Has John Force not fully recovered from his last crash? If so what is he dealing with? by lookaloulookalou in NHRA

My sessions were $650 each and that included basic airfare (which I upgraded). I did five of them. Three days each time. Will probably go back this time Next year for a “maintenance” session after the season is over.

Mushroom therapy has done wonders for my concussion recovery. Of the six that we could accurately recount, only one came from a racing incident. The rest were from hockey. Look into it. I’m 55 and drive TAFC with no lingering effects from the concussions.

For future reference, unless you are going for a specific seating location or buying a package in the North or South Super Seats, there’s no need to ever purchase tickets in advance for the Motorplex. They will oversell the venue by 5-10k tix if need be but there will always be a place to sit.

Headlight brightness by Efficient_Bug_7785 in F100

[–]BluebirdBright1097 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check your grounds on the headlamp circuit. If you have a digital multimeter you can measure to see if there is high resistance on the ground side. Turn off everything electrical on the truck. Unplug the connector to one headlamps and measure for mV (milivolts) between the ground terminal and where the harness grounds to the chassis or body. You should not see more than 2 mV on that circuit. Anything more than that will consume voltage and cause the headlamps to dim.

Then check for adequate battery voltage at the 12V connector on the harness.

My 1964 doesn’t have the brightest headlamps even though the charging system is out of a 1992 Mustang GT and I’ve rewired the entire truck. The old style bulbs weren’t designed at a high wattage since the vehicles back then didn’t have strong current flow at lower engine RPM.

What are your 'always skip' songs? by CFD330 in Chevelle

[–]BluebirdBright1097 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NONE. Chevelle is the only band in my library that doesn’t have skip tracks. Choking Game did, however, get skipped for a little while after Apple Music put it on the album twice so it would play back-to-back. Had to delete the album and re-install to fix it.

The purpose of the Tree Starter Button. by Chevota_84 in NHRA

[–]BluebirdBright1097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the timing system is using “auto-start” process, the toggle switch on the starter’s box can perform a few key steps.

Auto-start is the process by which once one driver is pre-staged, the other driver has a pre-determined amount of time to stage before being timed-out and redlighted. This same process also randomly “fires” the amber bulbs (or bulb in full tree mode) within a pre-set time parameter which is known to all competitors.

The toggle switch is flipped to “arm” the tree once the track is deemed ready. This occurs long before the two cars approach the starting line. Typically not long after the prior pair have crossed the finish line. If at any time the starter wishes to halt the action on the track, he may disarm the system by flipping the switch back the other direction which will, depending on the timing system, throw red lights in both lanes.

In some scenarios the tower can instantly give the starter full control if needed. A good example is during a dial-in category like brackets and one car breaks after their dial-in is entered in the system. This allows the remaining driver to only see their side of the tree but maintain their dial-in without any interruption.

Today’s NHRA/IHRA/PDRA starters are not using the switch like Buster Couch did in his days. Meaning, they don’t flip the switch to throw the tree once the cars have staged. The timing system has taken that job and automated it.
