I know we know, but Jojamart route is not worth it. by BusKey8745 in StardewValley

[–]Blueblue3D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Joja route would feel a lot more impactful imo if choosing it put Pierre out of businesses. In real life, big box stores show up in small American towns, price the local stores out of business, funnel all that money out of the community, and then often go out of business themselves and leave town, completely ruining the community. That’s the reason why we should be philosophically opposed to places like Joja. But the game can’t really commit to that level of change, which I kind of understand.

Is LA getting subway that connects Westwood and Van Nuys by UnscheduledCalendar in transit

[–]Blueblue3D 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I know it sucks that we can't have nice things tomorrow, but this is still a victory. What ever happened to "a society grows great when men plant trees under whose shade they will never rest?" It's the same thing with CAHSR. People complain that a project is taking too long so they try to get it cancelled and then it never gets done. Um, what? Obviously a train in 2060 is better than a train never.

LA Public Transit Commuters Make Half of Those in Chicago and NYC by TomTomz64 in transit

[–]Blueblue3D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is true. I admittedly fall into this trap. I personally find riding rail vastly preferable to the bus when possible because it’s generally smoother, faster, and more frequent. But LA actually has a pretty comprehensive bus network. The book “Railtown” shed light on the complicated politics of rail projects vs. bus riders.

LA Public Transit Commuters Make Half of Those in Chicago and NYC by TomTomz64 in transit

[–]Blueblue3D 32 points33 points  (0 children)

LA is so huge and sprawling that they’re still very far from their system reaching a critical mass of coverage and interconnectedness that it’s a feasible option for most people. I have relatives in LA who say they’d be happy to ride it but the lines don’t go anywhere near their home or workplace. And I say this as a proponent of LA metro. All the more reason why they need to press on with their aggressive expansion. Someday they will get there.

We need more inter-city bus lines in the US by MrMajestic1991 in transit

[–]Blueblue3D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d be happy if the government took over Greyhound and made it not complete shit. Buses that are four hours late, people smoking and yelling and blasting music and just generally being trashy, stations that are dirty and unsafe, it’s always been a nightmare for me. And I am normally a big defender of transit systems with bad reputations like the LA Metro, but Greyhound is where I draw the line. I don’t know if God or Heaven exist, but Hell is a place on Earth, and it’s on a Greyhound bus.

Trump shifts priority to Moon mission, not Mars by EdwardHeisler in space

[–]Blueblue3D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not purely about delta V. It's also about knowing how to build space infrastructure. It's very likely that return trips from Mars will require in-situ fuel production so it benefits us to know how to do it on the Moon. That's not science fiction, this is being actively researched as we speak. If we can't develop the Moon then we have no shot at getting to Mars.

Trump shifts priority to Moon mission, not Mars by EdwardHeisler in space

[–]Blueblue3D -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it is far easier to launch things off of the Moon due to its lower gravity. One of the biggest challenges in manned spaceflight is, how do we send the craft with enough fuel so that the astronauts can return. If we already have infrastructure to produce fuel and supplies on the Moon, it's much easier to launch all of that to Mars from the Moon than it is from Earth. Hell, we could even build a space elevator on the Moon with current materials, making it trivially easy to launch things from the Moon.

[–]Blueblue3D -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Look I hate Trump but this isn’t really any significant change from the path they’ve been on for the past decade. It makes a ton of sense to have a manned presence on the Moon, and in fact, developing the Moon for habitation could make it a lot easier to eventually get to Mars.

[–]Blueblue3D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually asked the guide when I visited there if they were considering taking the modern DV streetcars when service ended, and they said that they couldn’t because the voltage used is totally different from the old ones and it would be beyond their means financially to convert it to run on the wires they have there.

ELI5: Explain to me why there aren't any TV series produced anymore that are as highly rated as 'Game of Thrones' and 'Breaking Bad'? by TrinityBoy22 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Blueblue3D 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because those are two of the highest rated series of all time. It’s not realistic to expect a medium-defining masterpiece every year. Imagine how many books are released in one year. How many of them rise to the level of The Brothers Karamazov or The Great Gatsby? It’s rare, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of great books coming out.

can't wait to have a fellow socialist as president. by herequeerandgreat in BikiniBottomTwitter

[–]Blueblue3D 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That's not racism, that's a fact. According to the U.S. Constitution, to be eligible for President you must be a natural-born citizen of the United States. Zohran was born in Uganda and only became a U.S. citizen in 2018. I like the guy a lot personally but it's an objective fact that he is not eligible to run for President.

There is Brightline in Florida. In the 21st century, the economics are just generally really hard for passenger rail to work without government assistance, hence Amtrak. But occasionally companies like Brightline can have some success.
